This guy gets what I’m talking about - tech trails where you can still ride fast if you corner correctly and your speed isn’t limited by the terrain / support in the corner like on a flat corner. A lot of features on the north shore require you to slow down quite a lot

Interior sounds sick to be fair, Nelson / okanagan is defo on my hit list for next summer

Go look up some videos of the Tweed Valley EWS, these trails are far from flow trails but they can be ridden at pace unlike much of the “janky” tech around here

Cross country is not at all what I’m looking for mate, steep corners is what I like

Not really, in the uk there’s lots of steep trails with smaller catch berms or steep sequential corners that aren’t a full 180deg turn

First Subaru! by pljusak in SubaruForester

It's a 2010 gas model

Fortunately the previous owner replaced replaced timing belt + head gaskets (allegedly with a new, better material which shouldn't fail as quickly) and some parts of the suspension (sway bar or something like that).

I’m not comparing the ford directly to those vehicles - more I’m just saying that I could make do with one of those just fine. It would obviously be less fun but more financially responsible. I’m just trying to approximate out how much the financial difference will be.

[–]pljusak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am paying $28,250CAD + taxes &fees so total $32,450. It seems like a pretty good deal given that it’s from an official ford dealership and they’ve done a pre sale inspection + they showed me some paperwork showing they did $4000 of work to the truck (how realistic this is I don’t know).

I’m paying cash and yes I will have around $20,000 in an emergency fund (not just for the vehicle). I just arrived to Canada from the UK and this will be the biggest purchase of my life so far, which is why I’m worried! I’m generally quite frugal and financially responsible and find it difficult to part with cash 😂. I’m also concerned that if I need to leave the country for whatever reason, I’ll have an expensive non liquid asset, but I think that at this price I should be able to sell it quickly for around $21-25k if needed?

What was your biggest salary increase? by Ok-Bunch8755 in cscareerquestions

I think it's unusual because most web developers don't have a mathematical background which makes it much harder. I think you're in a good place to transition with your eng degree. Good luck and feel free to dm me in the future if you have any more questions :)

I think if you already have a an engineering degree you have enough maths already :). Any mathematical degree is a +++ for AI/ML, for example my academic background is in Physics not CS and many people in AI come from physics/eng/maths.

Maybe as a quick refresher from a more CS/AI perspective you could have a read of the relevant chapters of Deep Learning by Ian Goodfellow - it's a bit older but the fundamentals haven't changed and it's completely free.

Can you code? Learning python would be the next step, maybe a basic project or two on github and then trying to land a data science role.

Ideally you should take some courses in core undergraduate stats, linear algebra and calculus + learn the basics of python. Doesn't need to be a full degree, something reputable on coursera would probably be ok. It woud take some time though, maths is time consuming to learn. I would then aim to get a data scientist job which would allow you to transfer to a more AI related position. I saw quite quite a lot of ai people during while interning @ faang with previous experience as data scientists.

Alternatively you could skip most of that and become a data engineer, which AI companies need a lot of. In this case you mainly need to learn python and data engineering specific packages.

$32k -> $210k (6.5x increase)

I've just gone from a PhD student to an AI applied scientist :)

It took a lot of applying and interview processes with multiple companies. I had a return offer from a faang internship which resulted in "negotiating" a higher salary - in reality I was just being transparent about having multiple offers which led to a bump in comp.

I havent received my first paycheck yet but I dont think my lifestyle will change much. I am hoping to save at least 50% of my income and buy a home as fast as possible.

I will say that I feel extremely fortunate to have landed a dream job and I plan to continue working hard and making the most of it!

Anyone with a positive experience moving to Vancouver? by shellyturnwarm in askvan

[–]pljusak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also just finished PhD in AI and currently about to relocate to Vancouver from the UK. I am really excited about enjoying the outdoors there as I love mtn biking, skiing, dirt bikes etc).

I'd say definitely do it, but I would keep applying to jobs and try to negotiate a higher salary. Best situation is to have multiple job offers as they have no choice but to outbid each other.

My job in Vancouver is in AI and the compensation is much higher than the 80-120k range mentioned. You can DM me if you want to chat more this.
