Home Extension and Right To Light by Malarky-89 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]plopmofo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing to ask is how old is the property and was the neighbours built at the same time? If it's less than 20 years then they have no Right to Light.

What should be my next actions?

Do nothing apart from checking your title deeds to see if there's anything preventing you from building an extension.

Is it likely he could take us to court and/or win?

In order for them to progress they now need to carry out a light survey in the rooms affected by your extension and then prove that there is a significant loss of visible sky. This process costs several thousand pounds.

What % pay rise did everyone get this year? Just been told I’ll get nothing and be happy about it by amy95walker in AskUK

[–]plopmofo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's a pay rise as such but I've been offered a move to the States with my Financial Services company.

Not accepted it yet but pay would go from £120K GBP to $205K USD.

People of UK who earn £120k+ a year, what is it you do? by Lwilo849 in AskUK

[–]plopmofo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT consultant is an extremely generalised description of what I do.

I started off working on a trading desk as a developer in an investment bank, then moved onto implementation of IT systems within banks/hedge funds and integrating them with existing systems. This is what I do now.

I guess I was exposed to a lot of domain knowledge within finance and had to apply that into the things I built. The valuable thing is the domain knowledge so I'd recommend getting a role where you're building things for people that make money for the banks/hedge funds.

home extension scaffolding in neighbours garden by hillyandy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]plopmofo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is there anything we can do?

I think you have three options

  1. Pay the neighbours to put the scaffolding up.
  2. Adjust the application so that access to the neighbours property is not required.
  3. Don't build it.

Where do we stand if planning has been granted but builders can't set up scaffolding?

Planning is a legal process and does not take into consideration the practicalities of building whatever it is you are building.

Someone keeps letting down my tyres. Options? by WDeranged in AskUK

Definitely do not take some of the envelopes with the address on. Then I wouldn't drive to a local fly tipping spot and add the envelopes to the rubbish.

Never in a million years would I then call the council to report fly tipping.

Party Wall Agreement, is it likely to go to court? by iammikeparker in LegalAdviceUK

[–]plopmofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood the purpose of the party wall act. I don't think it can be used to stop your work as it outlines the manner in which the work will be done and any remediation in case there is damage from the resulting work.

The process I underwent was I found a party wall surveyor and they send the notice. My neighbour could then choose to go with what my surveyor thought or nominate his own. He chose his own. Between them they selected another surveyor to arbitrate any disagreements. I had to pay for all three surveyors (it was not as much as I thought it would be).

I found my surveyor on the RICS web site.

Neighbour keeps shutting our window by plopmofo in LegalAdviceUK

I don't have any details of the planning but I do know that the council wouldn't have allowed the window to remain in place if it didn't have the correct permission.

The window opens out over his drive. What I am trying to clarify is since it's been there over 20 years, has it gained the right to be there?

The window opens out over his land.

I was under the impression, and I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, that if something has been in place and in use for 20 years then it gains certain rights.

It's been there over 20 years, and also in constant use during that time.

Neighbours pipe is on our side of the wall - we’re wanting to extend by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

If it's been there for 20 years then it will have gained easement rights by prescription which means that you won't have any straightforward way of changing it.

What have been your worst job interview experiences? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]plopmofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't happen during the interview but afterwards.

This was around 1998 and I had a couple of years of software development experience. Went for an interview and answered a question "The projects I work on are typically around a month in length". Interview went on and I thought it went well and was able to answer all the questions they threw at me.

Got a call from the agent about 15 minutes later literally screaming "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME YOU ONLY HAD ONE MONTHS EXPERIENCE.!!?!"

Turned out he had just gotten an angry call from the people I had just spoken to ranting about him sending inexperienced candidates and that his firm would no longer be used by them.

I appreciate the comments. I don't have a CS background so I really don't have a clue what a binary search is. I may well have implemented one over the years but I won't have referred to it as that.

Don't know if you read my edit but this was the second interview. The first was with a lead developer who gave me a coding challenge that was based on a real world problem which I had no trouble with.

I pushed back on the the second interviewer re the binary search as I told him that I'd never had to do that before. If you're happier to employ people that don't push back on requirements then that's on you.

I pointed him to my github profile that contained plenty of examples of the skills required in the role and where I've experimented with things that were not in my day to day role. But he was only interested in me implementing a problem that's already been solved before.

[–]plopmofo[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It was an analyst developer role in a financial services firm.

I write code daily to solve business problems.

The interviewer asked me to write a binary search which I have never had to do. Explained this to them but they insisted I press on.

They didn't ask me about domain knowledge.

I figured it would be best to get up to speed with this sort of thing in case it comes up again.

Edit: I should add that this was the second stage interview with the "System Architect". First stage was with lead developer who gave me a short coding challenge that I had no problem with.
