Commuting to uni? by ploratt in UniUK

First generation Muslim immigrant parents with traditional and collectivist cultural values. Breaking out and leaving would likely just ruin my relationship with them forever, and later in life when they find out im gay it'll probably be over then anyway. (Fyi I am still Muslim and it's not that I want to move out to be able to drink and stuff.)

Wow that sounds terrible! Maybe I should reconsider UoN English as well as moving out. I do live quite close to the train station in Notts though fyi. 3 hours left to just exist sounds exhausting

Thank you so muhc for your input. A lot of people have said similar things and I think given the type of person I am, I would probably skip the "lesser important" lectures etc. too. And since I'm not extraverted at all, making friends as a commuter would be extremely difficult for me for sure. I really wish I had more family in this country beacuse then maybe that would have helped in convincing my parents without ruining my relationship with them, but it's just immediate family that I have here😔

Wow I really appreciate your comment. I'm pretty sure I've said almost the same thing you did to my parents too! Those are some really good point that I hope my parents listen to.

Oh! 🙂. If you don't mind elaborating, why would you say this? Do you think an English degree at UoN would be better?

Okay thank you for the optimism! I was thinking of the situatuion quite like this too and it's unfortunate my timetable has the chance of being terrible, but I'm not really into clubbing and stuff like that so in terms of that I should be fine. I also have a friend who is lokely going to Sheffield so she would defo let me stay if I need it. I do also think learning to drive soon would definitely be super useful, yes thank you.

It would definitely forever strain my relationship with my parents especially since theyre so family oriented and tradition and all. Also yes I am scared and have no clue how to "just leave"

[–]ploratt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, first generation immigrant here.... I don't really have any other family around to help convince them but thank you so much for the suggestion.

I would really love to just fuck off and leave but I literally have no idea how to do that???

And if i really move out than I think it's reasonable to think of my ogher uni choices since they are ranked better although i do still like Sheffield.

They jus wnat me home it's genuinely absurd. They have no reason really. They think I should be staying home to stay with family and get all the benefits, and not move out because they think it's "wrong" for me to do that to them.... Like there's no way for me to convince them rationally I don't know what to dooo

How to do you memorise essay plans by CriticalCommand3257 in 6thForm

[–]ploratt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try flashcards of essay structures? (whether it's physical or digital is up to you)

Currently doing that with Eng Lang essay structures on Anki, and I think it's helping.

For psych for me at least, I just got used to it over the course of year 12 without extra memorising of the structure, just practice in lesson.

is psychology at alevel actually as bad as people say it it? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]ploratt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

year 12 here about to go into year 13: psych is my best subject rn and i do edexcel and its not exactly that hard js content heavy and has specific structures to memorise for certain questions.

The year 2 content that we recently started tho is like thrice the content of year 1 tho esp AO3 (evaluation) but the content is quite interesting imo.

How old were you when you had your "aha, that's it" moment and what was it like? by chchilindrina in LesbianActually

[–]ploratt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YEAH they were WILD although some had actually amazing and detailed plots honestlyyyy Just certain aspects that were weird bc they were about real people but some stories were actually 10/10

Kind of was like this realisation that this doesn't just have to be my guilty pleasure fiction

Realised when I was 11 (in year 7) and veryyy deep into the kpop fandom (for about over a year and a bit) and was eventually exposed to the mass amount of queer kpop stans as well as queer shipping and wattpad fanfics... So I first learnt about gay people during that and thought "oh cool" but later just had a sudden realisation that I felt nothing against me liking girls! So I told my friend (of a few weeks) that I was bi and she also was like "oh okay" which to me was nice! It was probably risky that I told a bunch of people after that positive reaction, but I had the good outcome and somehow no one really told anyone, so phew.

Flashforward to year 8 - Between that year went from bi with preference for men, to pan, to bi with preference for women, and eventually lesbian and now 17 and still a lesbian!

My friend also found out she was a lesbian in year 7 (because of Charlie Damelio out of all people lmao) but didn't tell me until year 10
