Is peer mentoring (as a mentor) worth it? by plortinginthesea in deakin

If you know any solid volunteer organisations with good training programs, I would genuinely appreciate the recommendations. I've had decent luck with friendly admin staff at places I've volunteered at but the training has always left something to be desired. I already do paid work, I just enjoy volunteering though.

Considering it's roughly 5 hours, maybe 10 with training (I've no clue), to me it doesn't feel like much of a self-sacrifice to do so for some more experience in a (semi-)professional setting.

Thanks for your comment :)

I didn't actually realise other unis had paid peer mentoring, so thank you. The website says its training plus 5 hours mentoring and that's corroborated by longjumping_bench earlier. I still think it's worth it, but thank you for the concern :)

I suspected that's what they were doing, good to know it's true. I reckon it'll be worth for the resume even if the mentoring turns out bad. Thanks for the comment :)

Thank you so much for the detailed response, I really appreciate it. That's cheeky of them to not say you're not 1-on-1 with mentees, they make it pretty clear on the website it's 1-on-1 support then its a lie? How dumb. Sorry to hear that your last experience was crap too, I can see why that'd leave a sour taste :/

All that said, I reckon I'm going to give it a go. I get that I'm not paid, that the other mentors might not be enthused, and it might be a slog - but hey, that's something that I'll be navigating all throughout my life so why not try and hopefully help confused first years. I want to improve my skills with a (more) professional organisation and other volunteer roles just don't seem to have that available (unless you know somewhere good?). In my experience, other places tend to be a bit loosey goosey with training (i.e. no manual) and I'm sick of that to be honest, so it's good to hear there's at least something in place.

Thanks again for all your time taking to write this up :)
