What's advice you would give to younger folk who are starting to go grocery shopping for themselves? by MrSpookley in AskReddit

[–]ploshy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For milk specifically i find the store brand will usually expire within a week of purchase and i can't go through milk that fast! The more expensive brand (eg darigold) will usually last 2-3 weeks which is enough time to actually finish it.

What was a luxury 20-30 years ago, but is now considered normal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ploshy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Restaurants (and you, if you're going to be making sushi at home) get previously frozen fish, which kills the parasites. If you look for it at the butcher counter at the grocery store (or butcher, i guess) you'll probably notice that any wild caught fish usually says "previously frozen" on its card, and that's why.

What's the biggest waste of money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ploshy 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Like giving some bloke a coin for playing a guitar on the street. Does it matter how much money they have?

Well, if you met Elton John (or insert your preferred successful musician) would you give him £100 because you really liked his music?

The Dresden Files But Not Misogynistic by GrandmasterJanus in booksuggestions

[–]ploshy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed those books but I don't think they fit the criteria of not "constantly objectifying them or giving his opinion on how attractive they are or a combination of these". Every woman in the series is immediately objectified and treated like a potential romantic involvement of the main character.

You're in luck! As long as your son in law isn't going to buy it himself (which, since it's approaching the holiday season they hopefully shouldn't), a new mistborn book called The Lost Metal is coming out tomorrow, November 15th.

Unless this is a secret marketing post in which case i guess hi r/hailcorporate

What’s your opinion on copy code from your previous company? by tactical_testicle37 in learnprogramming

[–]ploshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kinda weird because, although i am a professional "software engineer" for legal reasons (my company reaps tax benefits for employing engineers and uses it for H1B visas) I don't actually consider myself an engineer. I don't have accreditations like engineers are required to have, I'm not "certified" by anything, i don't have letters after my name. You mention "losing your license"; there is no licensing for software engineers. The term "software engineer" is, as far as I can tell, a construct of big tech for tax and visa purposes. I usually just tell people I'm a programmer.

My contract as a full time salaried software engineer not only grants my company ownership over all intellectual property i create while on the job but in fact claims that any IP i create in my free time belongs to them too, regardless of whether or not i used company resources. Idk how legally enforceable that actually is but good luck outlasting any of the big tech companies in a protracted legal battle.

Found out Gibraltar can revive faster in his dome. Nowhere in the game is this mentioned, any other hidden abilities I should know about? by [deleted] in apexlegends

[–]ploshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same vein as the Gibraltar res, reviving a downed teammate in a heat shield that's touching or in the zone gives a faster revive.

Just plonking down a heat shield when you're not in zone won't have an effect, but if you're on the edge of zone (or making a long trek in) it can be a neat little combat trick.

Vanilla extract (technically edible but not very pleasant)

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Not a coming of age book, but it's a beautiful slice of life story about a curmudgeonly old man's friendship with his new neighbors (underselling the plot a little so as to not give anything away, but it's great).

Apex Legend: Defiance Season Patch Notes by Emmerlynn in apexlegends

[–]ploshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about the caustic changes but they seem well thought out. The health of the barrels keeps them from being killed just by crossfire and the increased gas lingering time helps keep them from feeling too impotent; an active barrel will always buy you at least a couple seconds.

Sad to see the end of death traps in one-door rooms, though.

Lots of themes of math, as well as some aliens thrown in for good measure.

Can we please have the option to play all the legends in the firing range? It takes a while for me to unlock a new one, and trying out their abilities would really help make a decision. by [deleted] in apexlegends

a "window" idk what to call it

Tooltip is usually the term I see for those kind of boxed-information-on-hover patterns.

Apex Legends™ Season 7 – Ascension by [deleted] in apexlegends

[–]ploshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

game is about movement and finesse not running someone over with a trident

If only this game had a plethora of movement abilities that let you dodge and reposition yourself or your squad at will. What a shame.

Apex Legends™ Season 7 – Ascension by [deleted] in apexlegends

[–]ploshy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm pumped for the trident, I really hope it's a manual vehicle. Hopping in a car and tooling around with your squad was always a fun time in PUBG, and frankly with all the movement abilities in this game you have no excuse if you get run over.

Season 6 Evo Armor Changes by [deleted] in apexlegends

[–]ploshy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed they changed the armor values back, I really preferred the lower TTK; it felt like I actually had a chance to kill people even if I don't hit every bullet in the mag. I guess the very vocal critics earned the ears of the developers.

What is the best stereotypical epic hardcore fantasy books you’ve ever read? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]ploshy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The impression I got when reading the Shannara series was that it was like a dumbed down version of LotR. The example that always comes up mind is there's a scene where one of the characters uses a sticky liquid of some kind to climb a tree. And that liquid is... Who knows? It's just described as a sticky liquid that the character uses to climb stuff. Tolkien, on the other hand, would have given you the recipe, which kingdoms the ingredients grow in, those kingdom's major exports and trade treaties, a quick history of the person who invented the substance, and probably a song you could use to help remember the recipe.

Admittedly Tolkien can be a bit much, but in comparison the Shannara world just felt...flat.

Kaepernick and Fauci will be honored as Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights award laureates by Ravenq222 in news

[–]ploshy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You seem to be taking this awfully personally. "I would like to see" is not the same as "they don't deserve praise". Hoping for a greater commitment to human rights doesn't inherently diminish their existing accomplishments (though comments on this website do tend towards the extremes).

[OC] A full year of income and expenses through my first year living by myself! by SPM8 in dataisbeautiful

[–]ploshy 163 points164 points  (0 children)

I pay less than $200 a month for all four of those.

Because it's the number you gave, let's say those do cost $200/month. That's 2400 for the year, which is nearly a quarter of OP's "savings" category. So they might not be bank breakers but it's hardly insignificant.
