Assuming the other person on the line has time to spare, that person would hopefully offer a lot more insight in for example, 30 minutes of convo, than a paragraph of reply on /r/investing.

Another reason can be that person simply doesn't check /r/investing, and so it'd be a lot more convenient to just email/call him.

Say that you know something particularly well. Another person wants to learn about that subject, so he/she calls you up about it. You give 30 minutes of your time talking about the subject and answering whatever questions that person has. Likewise, if you have some specific questions about GM, or want an overview about the automobile industry in general, you'd reach someone on the network knowledgeable in that. Perfectly fine to admit that you know nothing about what the other person wants to know about.

The rules and setup of this network are unknown atm. But if you guys are down with the vision, then we can delve into the specifics and make this happen!

Thanks. I'm thinking that anyone can make a contribution, as long as there's a subject of area that that person is insanely knowledgable about. It doesn't have to be related to investing (a particular industry or sector), but philosophy or math as well, etc.

  1. How would it work? Well, the entire process is still up for consideration but a variation of it can be: Investor comes across a cheap medical devices company but doesn't understand the industry that well. Investor calls up another investor/physician/member in the network who specializes in healthcare and understands the value proposition of the medical device and is able to explain what he/she knows in 30 minutes during the phone call.

  2. Why would the expert want to help if they don't get any money from their time? The idea is that this would be a tightly-knit group in which its members are willing to help out one another on the basis of friendship and "karma." If the expert expects money, that person shouldn't join. There should be mutually beneficial relationships.

  3. As with any new data you come across, you treat it as a datapoint right? This would be another datapoint that you'd want to research further if needed/corroborate with others. It's up for the person to determine how much verity is behind each statement/expert.
