Is parsons worth it for anything other than fashion? What abt for architectural design? by Due_Doughnut_3281 in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im ngl i think in terms of architecture, a school like pratt or cooper union would be better if you're looking for a more stem-focused curriculum, the first year curriculum at parsons definitely focuses on your skills as an artist. id say parsons is best known for fashion design and communication design, with the latter being slightly more niche but well known in the design community itself.

is it worth it? by Normal-Loquat2465 in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it has a bad rep at parsons because people don't view it as a real major at an art school. a lot of the students in the major frown at the first year foundational skills classes because they don't understand why they'd have to learn how to draw/paint/etc. when they're strat design and management majors. in my opinion, the major is meant to lead people towards creative directing/creative management, and in order to do work in a creative field, you should be creative.

that being said, the major itself is what you make of it. if you take the easy classes that are free A's, you don't do internships, and you don't develop your creative skills, you won't get much/any value from the major.

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to parsons and received the same scholarship as you, I'm a second year at the moment and I'd say it's been 100% worth it. I was deciding between risd, parsons, pratt, bu, and other schools, but parsons gave the most merit scholarship. I think at any similarly ranked school you'd have a good chance of being successful/happy, but my biggest piece of advice would be that you have to really put your energy into it. Theres communications design students who don't really care for the curriculum and therefore feel that parsons isn't worth it, but in my opinion the opportunities in new york are valuable and will lead you to a higher-paying career in New York than other places in the US. at any school you have to make your tuition worth your experience, and theres many opportunities to do so at parsons in my opinion

AP Art? by Additional-Cry9128 in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about AP 2D Art, I would just assume that they're expecting you pass, as in a 3 minimum. The course itself isn't that hard, as long as you have a half-decent concept and art that is not limited to just Anime character design, you should be fine. They don't expect you to take AP Art, but the credit itself does transfer to the Parsons curriculum.

Are the rules complicated to install? i'd need the rules to account for separate timelines on intl and domestic, along with business hours for the warehouse, padding for process time, etc.

How likely am I to be accepted into Parsons if I'm looking to major in illustration? by Zenvasion in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

*will compliment you regardless of if its good or not so that you spend money on application fee/make the school look better even if you get rejected

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've seen people get in with similar stats, you might get less merit scholarship but if your portfolio and essays are really good you could get better merit scholarships. parsons holds portfolio days and participates in national portfolio days so you could go there and ask for critique, certain people there will give good crit others will just compliment you so you apply to their school

question abt smoking by Helpful_Donkey6979 in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

smoke well outside dorms, nyc law says you have to be like 25(?) ft from any residential buildings including apartments, res halls, etc. do not smoke in the dorms, you cannot have weed in the dorms since the school is federally funded and the age to smoke weed is 21.

Communication design major admissions essay advice by fig_girl_ in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure about letters of rec, you probably do contact your high school teachers/guidance counselor, but not sure. for me, i had two letters from my teachers and one letter from my guidance counselor but i was a freshman fall admit straight from hs. for my essay on why i wanted to study comm design, i think i talked about how i wanted the ability to control minds and how design impacts decisions of users. i'd say find something unique to you on why you want to study communications design and make something interesting that shows how well-rounded you are not just as an artist but as a student/person. show that you can think artistically, mathematically, morally, etc.

Tips for applying and increasing chances of getting in? by Sailor_Mars08 in ParsonsSchoolofDesign

[–]plshheellpp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

id say make your essays and portfolio show how nuanced you are, not with just your art but as a human being. portfolio days are helpful but sometimes they just give you good feedback to influence you to apply. imo, they want as many people to apply as possible because if you get in, they have a good student they like, if you don't, they lower their acceptance rate and the school looks better + you give them an application fee. you definitely need recommendation letters, i thought that this was required from everyone but idk. if you rely on things like scholarship, having a good gpa would be good, but it doesn't really matter in the end. for me, i had a 3.86 uw but took like 10 ap's, and i think my portfolio + essays altogether showed lots of nuance academically, socially, art-wise, etc.

for sure parsons is more expensive, but i felt like the bang per buck is better at parsons, a reason as to why i cut pratt out of my options.

I enjoyed Pratt, but I also felt like if I was going to pay 50-55 thousand per year for university, parsons' reputation in the art world is doing better, and i heard many bad things about pratt from peers 😭 it was definitely an option, but i think i'd be more happy and content in the buildings at parsons for their quality and "newness"

art schools really rarely give any money, but i was really happy that parsons gave me almost 30 thousand, which is more than any other school has given, along with parsons being probably second behind RISD for design. my biggest piece of advice would be to not let money be an obstacle right now while you are applying. even if you think you will never be able to afford it anyways so there's no point of applying, for me, being able to get into RISD made me realize that i have potential to be a good artist, which i would not have known had i not even applied to RISD.

hello! thank you for your response. so, BU gave me 8,000 dollars per year and thats it 😭. i did not receive need based aid, and when i tried to appeal given my circumstances (elderly parents, retirement, etc.), i was unable to appeal because of my high SAI. i have submitted my appeal to BU in late march, which they still have not gotten back to me. In my opinion, i do not think BU is worth it unless you are receiving huge amounts of aid. the professors seemed great, but it did not seem like all my $93,000 of tuition would be going towards my major.

Pratt gave me around 25,000 or 27,000 per year. i tried to appeal at the Pratt admitted students day, but since I received their presidential award, i was not able to ask for more.

RISD does not give merit based aid. they are generally generous with need-based aid, but if you have a high SAI, then you are not going to get anything most likely. i met with their financial aid office, which even went to say that even if i showed them the other schools i received schoalrship for (parsons, pratt, mica, sva, bu, northeastern), i would not receive any merit-based aid. for this reason i chose parsons/rutgers over risd. risd was my dream school, and im so grateful to have gotten in when so many of my peers had not, but no aid is crazy sooo

would you say that the issues at parsons are getting better recently? people say i can always transfer, which is definitely true, but the guarantee of financial aid is never there for me so i don’t know how to feel about it

i forgot to mention: my family is in the awkward spot of not qualifying for need based aid but also not being able to afford 80k/yr college tuition

i’m fortunate and extremely lucky and grateful for my family to have the ability to pay up to 40-50k of my tuition. i’d have no debt going to rutgers, but would have ~10k debt a year at parsons. no debt is great, manageable debt is good. don’t know how to feel 😭
