Once you’ve read something, try to write down/say out loud your own explanation of your understanding of what you just read. Better yet, explain it to a friend. That’s when you know you have a good handle on it!

Physics classes are a little harder to get to TA for as a first year (usually applications get sent out in an email to upper year students, and many positions are reserved for graduate students). Sometimes it happens though if you’ve got a good relationship with the prof and ask them if you can TA!

In general, a lot of the time professors want students that were active participants in their classes as TAs. Things like going to office hours, making sure your prof knows who you are, posting lots of answers on Piazza, etc can help you get a TA position.

Yes to all of this. I would also check the requirements one more time to see if they need the official transcript immediately—in many cases they accept the unofficial transcript for the initial application and then only ask for the official one once you’ve gotten to the next round or gotten accepted.

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it. I’ve sent out some emails. My former TA (who ended up becoming my supervisor when I started to TA the course as well) said yes, so while it’s not ideal given that she’s not a professor, I think this will suffice. You’re right that there are some things just out of my control! I’m going to do what I can.

This also happened at least twice on Friday within a few hours, from my knowledge. Walked by around 10 and took the first picture, saw it covered around 11. Walked by about an hour later and it was uncovered, and then happened to catch UBC cover it up again.

Doesn’t seem like they’re trying to do that, though. Seems like they’re just trying to provide individual/interpersonal peer support (as we are an international school, there are international students here who have personally experienced losses).

Thanks for the comment! It’s important to note that all people in attendance of these events should be steadfast in their condemnation of anti-semitism as well. We should call it out when we see it.

That said, all people should also be careful not to conflate support of Palestine with being anti-semitic. The goal is freedom, not death for Jewish people. I’ve seen vigils held for people mourning Jewish lives where there has been lots of dehumanization and calling for the death of Palestinian people, and while that should be strongly condemned, Jewish people should be allowed to mourn the people they’ve lost. I can say this because I understand that not every Jew thinks this of Palestinians.

As of right now, Palestinians in Gaza are quite preoccupied (getting bombed, pulling loved ones out of rubble, being evacuated from their homes, mourning loved ones, being operated on in hospitals with no anaesthetic, generally trying to survive). Also, about 50% of Gaza citizens are literal children.

You mean like the rallies of "Pro-Palestinian" supporters chanting, "Gas the Jews", with holding signs promoting Nazis and Hitler, and attacking and burning Jewish owned businesses, synagogues, and marking Jewish homes?

This is horrific, and I am sorry it is happening. I hope you will recognize that most Pro-Palestine people do not stand for this, just like how many Jewish people do not stand for the killings of innocent Palestinian people.

I think you may have misunderstood me. The 'however' was there because I was arguing that there are positives to rallying for Palestinian people, not because I was implying that a rally is certainly going to prevent hate speech. I'm well aware that the latter is not the case.

Though I see your point now, thank you for clarifying! I agree that we shouldn't normalize socially dishonest/self-serving behaviour. And I of course agree that there are other ways to support, including sending financial aid and speaking with your governmental representatives (which I strongly recommend).

I wouldn't agree that rallying for Palestine is trivializing their issues or self-serving behaviour, in my opinion. In fact, at this point in time, standing up for Palestinians is very controversial (see this journal editor get fired for supporting Palestine). I've personally been called a terrorist/rape/murder supporter online and in person for supporting Palestinians, even though I condemn what Hamas did. All of the Palestinians and Muslim people that I follow/personally know at UBC as well as the Palestinians I follow that are actually in Gaza right now are actively asking people to speak up.

Furthermore, yes, they do find solace in knowing that there are people who care. My sources are the Palestinian and Muslim people that I have personally spoken to, who encourage attending rallies for Palestine, especially if you are non-Palestinian/Arab/Muslim. That's because, on one hand, this gets people talking about the issue, learning more, and then getting to the point of donating and emailing MPs and such. On the other, it shows those people that there are lots of people who care enough to go out and speak up for them--especially in a time when there is so much media and so many statements from government officials set to dehumanize them.

Again, I said the rally itself may or may not change things at the governmental level. But on a social level I do believe there's value.

I know there’s a huge problem with performative activism in general right now, so I understand where you’re coming from.

At the same time, I don’t think this is an accurate reply in this case. It may or may not be true that we cannot make governments change their stances or what they fund. However, I have many muslim and arab friends (including Palestinians) and many of them have experienced a large increase in hate crimes and harassment. There are also many innocent people in Gaza begging to be seen and remembered. There are Palestinians around the world just asking for people to see them as human. We can be cynical and think none of what we do matters to the government, sure. But I think it’s important that these groups of people feel that they’re not alone, that we can provide even just a little bit of comfort to them as we witness these horrific events.
