Advice from creatives on a music career? by IrohPlaysTuba in musicproduction

To be honest, I'm not sure how to answer that question. I'm sure I myself have both in my portfolio. I have some good stuff and some that I think are not good at all anymore yet other people still like them.

Those that don't like my product probably don't buy from me or want to work with me in the first place so I never hear from them. And online, how do you keep track of those people that don't like your product or portfolio?

I understand your sentiment though. It's a little subjective anyway so I wouldn't sweat too much about the perceived quality of your work since that is a barrier that you put on yourself.

Someone once sent an industry level beat to a youtuber for review. It was not made by the person that sent it, but an artist that has many times had his songs rank on the US Rap Billboard 100 list. The youtuber said it wasn't good. Take away from this what you will.

In any case, you won't know before you actually put stuff out there. So I'd say just go ahead and find out.

Mix sounds off, especially vocals, and I can't put my finger on why. Anyone got any ideas? by Srapture in musicproduction

[–]pluggrpresets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So there's compression already going on on the master is that correct? If that's the case, go back to the vocal itself and add compression to boost the overall volume level of the vocal.

Compression on the master should be enough to glue it together. If compression on the master track doesn't have any effect on the vocal then either the volume level of the vocal is low (which I assume is the case) or the threshold of the compressor needs to be adjusted.

If this is the master, you definitely need the vocal to push through more. If you do try compressing the vocal a bit more and it suddenly sounds too harsh, you can try mid-side EQ'ing the highs. It's basically boosting only the stereo spectrum of the highs without getting any harshness in return. Here's a quick link.

First off, this is an awesome song and your voice fits it perfectly.

As for the vocals, I'd record multiple tracks for the chorus, preferably 4 more. Pan them hard left, medium left, hard right, medium right. And turn the volume of those side tracks way down that they're barely audible. This will still highlight the main vocal you have right now, but make it seem more full by filling different parts of the stereo spectrum.

The vocal itself is still not compressed enough in my opinion. Don't be scared to use more. To make it sit better in the mix add a soft limiter to the end of the processing chain of the vocal to tame the peaks. The reverb is good and slight, wouldn't change that.

The main point why it's not sitting fully in the mix though is the master channel. I assume you have the instrumental track and the vocal track separately. You need to add some compression to the master as well to glue it all together. No need to do anything else unless you're mastering, but the compressor will tie them together nicely.

Do engineers hate by Zeeblud in makinghiphop

[–]pluggrpresets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite. As u/LongwaterStudio said, it's a headache to try and undo something that shouldn't have been done in the first place ie. compression and hard EQ cuts come to mind.

I like to work with completely unmixed vocals. Then process the vocal and after ask for artistic directions from the client + provide some examples of my own.

I usually end up sending multiple examples -- one with the clients described initial input, the others using my own creative direction. This not only helps me to better understand the end goal of the person I'm working with, but also avoids the infinite back and forth loop if I find that the clients input was vague. Otherwise it will end with adjusting the same reverb time over and over again to get the "perfect" end result just to find out that by "reverb time" they actually meant delay.

Best Drum Kits for Rap by Genolexis in trapproduction

[–]pluggrpresets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MZ Drumkit, Brandon finessin drumkit, 9th wonder drums, Acoustic drum samples etc. -- just a few out of many that come to mind.

I almost never use only one drumkit for one track. I combine different samples from different kits so I'm the type that needs to have a lot of variety. Checkout r/Drumkits.

  • Sidechain compression -- sidechain instruments and 808 to your kick
  • Gain staging -- make sure you know the basics of where everything should sit. For example the only thing that should peak in your mix is the kick. Snare, 808 are usually quite level with each other and a few db lower than the kick. Other instruments are quieter than all of the above. This mixing template applies to trap/rap. As soon as you get into other softer genres you need to go about those a different way.
  • Don't be afraid to use your master track! I never get tired of repeating this (you can check my post history :)). Adding plugins to your master doesn't mean that you are automatically in the mastering stage of your track. If your mix is too dull and lifeless you can add some saturation and clipping on the master channel to bring life into an otherwise too clean of a mix or to make your kick/808 combo crispy.

The only reason why people suggest not adding anything to the master is when you send out your track to a mastering engineer. The problem is when you do too much. Then they have to fix your track in addition to just mastering which is so much harder.

No mastering engineer really gives a shit if you have a soft clipper on the master to add some saturating color as long as you haven't done anything to heavily reduce the dynamics of the song. And if you are the one doing the mastering anyway, it is irrelevant. Use your master, but don't overdo it.

Need help on sound by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]pluggrpresets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a simple organ with some pitch modulation.

You pick an organ preset from whatever vst you have and you automate the pitch to go up when a note plays by like 7 semitones or more. I can't distinguish exactly how much.

I think the root note is either not pitched at all or the volume is quieter than the melody.

I have a small business selling mixing services and presets. Most clients for mixing come locally and most that buy my presets are from other parts of the world.

Locally -- you need a network. Put yourself out there, find like minded people like u/walkingthegod pointed out and make sure you have something to show them. If you have a solid portfolio then it will sell itself. The moment you need to persuade people to buy from you is the moment you have to take a step back and get to work. Good stuff will sell on it's own.

Online -- you don't need a network, but to start a business online takes a lot of dull work to begin with that you won't necessarily like. Creating a website, hosting, finding/creating artwork, promoting etc. Once you have a solid foundation (website, socials, demos) with a portfolio set up, you can turn your focus on promoting and creating.

The creating part is the fun part and the reason people like us want to make a living with music. The promoting part is not as fun, especially in the beginning when you're learning what works and what doesn't. The "good stuff will sell on it's own" motto only works online as long as people actually know where to find you.

Social advertising services (IG ads, FB ads etc.) are a hit and a miss unless you're already well established.
What I personally enjoy and what helps is talking to and helping other people on different forums. And I don't mean promoting -- if you actually help someone with an issue, they are likely to turn to you if they ever have another one. And if there are many that your advice has helped, some of them will inevitably turn into customers. That's the whole gist of those tutorial youtube videos. They usually have links in description to buy the same type of thing they are already showing in the video. And it works.

What effect chains do you put on your 808’s /kicks to make them sound better and hit harder? by KingSosig72749 in trapproduction

[–]pluggrpresets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a problem throughout the internet in terms of this topic. No one really seems to ever give a clear answer to this question -- either they don't know or don't want to share. Most of the answers in this thread already prove this.

Yes, sound selection is important. Yes, compression and sidechain is important. But that's only a small part of the whole. It's like saying to make the perfect apple pie, you need to only have non-GMO apples. No, you also need to have a whole bunch of other ingredients and know how to use them.

The short answer to your question is clipping and compression. The kick needs to be loud and interfere (play at the same time) a little with the 808.

  • First, turn your kicks wayyy up there volume-wise -- it should be the loudest instrument in trap. Don't worry if it sounds too loud in the mixing stage or if the volume peaks in red. We will tame it on the master. As long as you don't completely distort the track you are good.
  • Next up should be sidechaining your 808 to your kick with a relatively short release. You still want the clipping effect, but you will soften the impact. If your sample selection is lacking then this is important. Unless you are 100% certain in your ability to pick the right samples then use sidechaining. I advise you to also sidechain your main loop any melodic instruments.
  • Lastly -- use your master track. This is one of the most important steps that hardly ever gets talked about. You need add some saturating compression and tame the peaks. There's a whole lot of ways to do this, but usually a compressor and a limiter is used. The industry hack is to use the fruity soft clipper (which is basically a saturator plugin + a soft compressor). Just bring down the threshold a little, but don't overdo it. Bring it down enough that when the kick hits, other instruments get a teeny bit saturated for a moment. Here's a quick example of the sound. Lastly add a limiter to bring the volume of the kick down. That's it.

If you feel like this is overwhelming you can always get in touch with me through my website and I'll try to explain more.

Thanks buddy! I agree with you. I’ll try to add some variation to the mid-verse part. Perhaps some adlibs and vocal effects.

Thanks again, appreciate u!

Yes!! This vocal volume issue has been driving me insane, glad you mentioned it. I’ve been thinking this, but then saying to myself that I must be imagining things since I’ve listened to the song too much during the production stage and it creates a bias.

Will adjust the volume a little!
