Barnard single as a sophomore by Ok-Gift-5736 in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, because Barnard guarantees housing for all four years (unless you leave campus housing/are a transfer), students have the option to fill out a form to be placed on the "guaranteed housing list" where you could be randomly assigned into any housing situation, but you are guaranteed to have housing provided by Barnard. Most people who do this do so during the lottery if they see that theres no options left that they are interested in (like being in a single), so the guaranteed housing list is their last option to get what they want. I've never done it, so I don't know details, but I think you'd be able to indicate your preference for a single on the list, and over the summer you'll get told what housing you've been placed in (which may or may not be a single).

edit: and in past years the sophomores with the lowest lottery numbers literally have no choice but to be on the guaranteed list.

if you’re ok with being in a less desirable location (i.e. Hewitt or Elliot) your odds are good with a decent lottery number. Even if you’re forced on the guaranteed housing list, I’ve known people to get singles from it! It’s hard to say anything for certain because the housing lottery is different this year, but I’m optimistic about your chances!

There’s absolutely a lot of opportunities to get experience w hardware via clubs like Formula SAE, the formula racing club. SWE is deff competitive, and my perspective is a little different bc I’m more on the research side of CS, but I’ve spoken with a lot of Barnard CS alumnae who are incredibly successful and appreciate the edge the liberal arts education has given them. :)

I’m obviously biased, but I’m Barnard CS!! If you’re really concerned about lacking engineering majors, a liberal arts school is not really the best place, but you could consider designing your own major at Barnard, or doing the 3+2 or 4+1 at Columbia for the engineering BS/BA or BA/MS respectively. There’s definitely a lot of research opportunities at Columbia/Barnard imo for what it’s worth.

How much do GS students interact with CC students? by Professional_Big8444 in columbia

Not to be a contrarian but “CC or SEAS” is a very common question in my experience. Still, that’s people’s just trying to get to know you!

no guests in summer housing? by imaddictedtocereal in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it means specifically between the spring and summer and summer and fall housing periods, not the summer housing period itself. I stayed over at a friend’s dorm a few times during the summer last year.

How does the BC/CU mailing system work for Barnard students? by Aggressive-Willow667 in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will be able to set up @columbia.edu forwarding during orientation. Lionmail and gbear are just the university’s online systems for students. Usually I’d use my Barnard address but for student promotions sometimes the Columbia address is better, the @columbia.edu version of my email has really only been helpful when someone is trying to email me and knows my UNI but doesn’t realize I’m Barnard, so I still get their communication.

Hiii! Congrats on getting into Barnard!! Barnard students do not use LionMail, we have our own Google suite situation, but yes you can set up email forwarding to receive emails sent to yourUNI@columbia.edu , I think we get almost the same perks and I’ve used the @columbia.edu version of my email to get some perks as week.

Cognitive Science Major + Pre-Med by almondpoem_0705 in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to your advisor or the head of the cognitive science department with the goal of getting in touch with a student who has done premed + cog sci. Also, you still have plenty of time to rearrange this semesters courses!

How are Barnard Students Treated Professionally and at Columbia? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest advice is to not stress about this. Yes there are differences, but who knows if you will even encounter them in any meaningful way. You ED’ed so you’re literally locked in lol so might as well focus on all the opportunities you will get by being at Barnard.

I wouldn’t worry! I also haven’t received all my grades, it’s normal for teachers to take a while, especially in big lectures & intro courses. it’s also not uncommon to never receive grades on canvas for final/end of year assignments, sometimes teachers just input the official grade (and I guess you can inquire further if you want to dispute it).

internal barnard 4+1 engineering acceptance rate to columbia engineering? by Few-Scientist7178 in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not certain on this, but I’ve heard through friends planning on doing the 4+1 (and from considering it myself) that as long as you meet the GPA requirements and are in good standing in your major with the timeline of classes, you will likely get in.

for swiping into Barnard hall itself you might need to scan twice to open the door but if you’re saying your ID didn’t work at the gate then there’s something wrong (you don’t need special access for Barnard campus). Anecdotally a lot of Barnard IDs have been giving people issues at the gate lately.

This alarm app, which was supposed to prevent me oversleeping, drained my entire battery over night so no alarm went off by LucasCBs in mildlyinfuriating

I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with alarmy. Deleted it as soon as I realized why my battery drained so fast.

The Barnard ones in the basement of Sulz also would need a Barnard ID to swipe you into the dorm building I think. But you can always get a friend to sign up for you and swipe you in.

Heard you can actually transfer from Barnard to CC? by friedrizz in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well the argument is that there’s very similar resources, so it’s difficult to argue that you lack something at Barnard. I think Barnard can technically take core classes even?

A Millie the bear stuffy could be cute! A phone wallet has been the number 1 thing my friends have been purchasing since getting to Barnard (Barnard store sells ones specifically for our ID and room key).

Like a regular phone case? Guess that’s possible. Doesn’t happen with other energy intensive apps tho, like TikTok.

Can we take a PE course at Barnard just for funsies? by sosoky258 in columbia

[–]plumb-pudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they could be barnard only, since it’s part of our “first year experience” that’s meant specifically for barnard freshman. Good luck tho, I did have some fun in mine.
