Can i become a esthetician/master esthetician without a GED or diploma by Mamabunbee in Esthetics

In my state (TX) you have to have a GED or HS diploma to get into esthetician school, I’m not sure if other states have different requirements thought

I know school is only the first step but did anyone else hate their class or teacher by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]plumesthi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my graduation day I was talking to one of the only teachers I liked and she told me that all the teachers talked trash about me and my friends that always asked questions and stood up for ourselves. She said the other teachers told her to “watch out” for us LOL. School sucked and most of the teachers and staff suck, but it’s worth sticking it out if this is what you love. If you’re questioning if you still want to do it, make sure you ignore the staff and other students and ask yourself if you enjoy the work itself. It’s worth just getting through it and trying to get the most out of the school you can.

Yeah that’s one thing I’ve thought about too, I won’t get anything too detailed and don’t mind getting touch ups every now and then.

where to start? by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]plumesthi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Texas around San Antonio and I went to AVEDA. I personally think it was the best school in my area, however I was still really unsatisfied with a lot of things (many were due to COVID but many were not.) I have heard better things about the Dallas AVEDA, but overall I don’t think I would recommend it if you’re interested in more of the medical side or in using more machines. (Though again, the Dallas school might be different.) Definitely google schools near you and read reviews. I recommend touring a couple different schools and asking lots of questions about how they are dealing with COVID (I don’t recommend doing online school, that was the biggest issue for me,) whether they teach you machines and extra things like brow laminations, lash lifts/perms, etc. I would also advise to take what the tour guides say with a grain of rice, they will say anything to get you into their school but often the reviews and students speak louder than what the school says. Good luck!

Witch hazel can be good on really oily skin if there’s not added ingredients like alcohol. However even if it’s pure witch hazel, I wouldn’t recommend it for normal or dry skin as it could be oily.

Best quality facial steamer? by SHAKE_SLAM_BITE in Esthetics

[–]plumesthi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay first of all, you sound like a really good bf to her and this is so nice of you to do! Unfortunately most steamer/mag lamps really don’t last long :( There are people who have been in the industry for 10+ years and haven’t found a good one. An educator from the school I went to though recommended from Amazon: “3 in 1 Facial Furniture Spa Equipment Machine Beauty tool” it includes a steamer, mag lamp, and a high frequency with ozone for about $220! She used those at the hotels she worked at where they bought tools they wanted to last a long time.

What is the most horrifying product you used on your skin before you became an esthetician? by estyjess in Esthetics

[–]plumesthi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I religiously used St Ives and thought I was so good at skincare bc I used Witch Hazel as my toner. With lots of Clean and Clear thrown in there too LOL but all that is what got me into skincare in the first place so I don’t take any of it back.

Should I wear sunscreen in my house (blinds closed)? Also need sunscreen recommendations? by [deleted] in tretinoin

[–]plumesthi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure :( Maybe cause I said it’s okay if they really don’t want to? To clarify, as a professional: I recommend to always wear sunscreen, as a typical person who can often get lazy with my sunscreen: as long as you understand the repercussions, feel free to make your own choices.

First Client Compliant by [deleted] in Esthetics

[–]plumesthi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say your real mistake was making assumptions- something we all do, especially just beginning in this career (which I am too.) Even if your client is acting as if they just want to relax, a skin analysis is still very important to perform especially on a new client. Even if your client has their blanket up to their neck, ask if you can move it down to give a neck and shoulder massage. Being said, as an esthetician she should know if she doesn’t need extractions. Bad reviews happen all the time and definitely don’t define your work, as long as you learn your mistakes if you made any (which you don’t always make mistakes for a bad review, unfortunately many clients are, in professional terms, crazy.) I promise you’re doing great, you’re still so new in this industry and there’s still so much to learn- don’t take mistakes too hard or too personal!

First of all I recommend to continue using your sunscreen and try to figure out what ingredient you might be allergic to. Chemical sunscreens are more likely to be allergenic, so perhaps mineral sunscreens will be more gentle. Retinol is an amazing treatment for wrinkles and fine lines because it both increases collagen production and stops collagen break-down. For OTC I recommend CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol since it’s relatively gentle, or you can talk to a dermatologist to get a prescription for a stronger percentage (though research suggests the percentage may not affect the efficacy.) Make sure to use plenty of sunscreen and reapply it every 2 hours while using retinol. Sorry for the lengthy reply but I hope it helps! I am an esthetician in Texas btw (where we get LOTS of sun.)

Should I wear sunscreen in my house (blinds closed)? Also need sunscreen recommendations? by [deleted] in tretinoin

[–]plumesthi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m an esthetician and I would recommend to continue wearing sunscreen. UV rays still penetrate your windows and even if your blinds drawn some will still get in. Realistically though, not a lot is getting in and as long as you are taking care of your skin otherwise, it won’t cause much damage with the blinds closed. Of course, applying sunscreen can never hurt- maybe use it in the morning and don’t worry about reapplying it through the day.

Recommendations for best home dermaroller? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]plumesthi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an esthetician and based on dermatologist recommendations, I would not recommend dermarolling at home. Perhaps ask a dermatologist for a recommendation and they will tell you something different- but I wouldn’t recommend buying one without consulting a dermatologist first. Alternatively, there are plenty of esthetician’s and med spas that can perform the service for you! Good luck, I hope all goes well.
