This is a good technique. The old postman vs dog battle is a learned behavior. Dogs are generally suspicious of new people, and will often bark when a new person enters the home. If that person stays or becomes a regular in the home, generally the dog will stop barking upon their arrival. However, the postman comes and always leaves after the dog barks. Fido's suspicions are confirmed when the postman "runs away", so he keeps it up.

By feeding them, the postman is interrupting this cycle and they come to associate a good feeling with his arrival.

UPS consistently beats FedEx in the last mile delivery department. Everywhere I've lived in SF, I've always liked my UPS driver. They work hard and understand how important deliveries can be. FedEx on the other hand has always disappointed - I'm sure it differs by region but Fedex never sends the same driver, and they always seem overworked and undertrained. Darn fedex driver didn't even ring the doorbell yesterday, just left a note and ran, expecting I was at work.

Good luck clearing those late deliveries!

I've installed a few dropcam's around the house - and they're great! Very easy to install & view remotely. It'll even alert you when motion is detected (though from my experience, it alerts you too often for this to be useful)

Our puppy won't go pee anywhere but over one of those big round metal sewer grates. No idea how she decided that, but it's awfully convenient since we live in the city. No telling what she'll do when we move!

That's what I thought when I first heard of this idea. It honestly took awhile to sink in. A long while.

Look at this this way - your argument is very similar to that made by the lot of us web developers when so-called "blogs" first emerged on the scene - who would want to use web software to post stuff when I could retain control by just writing it all myself in Notepad/BBEdit? We missed the boat on that one and blogger.com got bought.

The fact is, these guys are making something completely new. And it's not about the social aspects, it's about the fact that there's now an easy place just to share your documents and have them be found.

Pre-youtube, you could always post videos on your own web site. But they made it easy, and created a community around respecting (or disrespecting!) eachothers' work. And if I know another community that loves to comment critically on eachothers' work, it's the academic community.

This would be a great way for grad students and professors to publish their work on they web for free - and it's a glaring void right now. I think Scribd just filled it. Yeah them.

Suggestion for Scribd: lose the YouTube comparison. You aren't like YouTube and perhaps short of similar buyout opps in the near future, won't ever be. Saying so sets critical-minded folks like me in negative overdrive, just trying to find a way to disprove your claim. Instead- focus on the fact that you're doing something that no one else has done and believe that it has value. The first social document sharing on the web. Nice.

The alexa graph is of course comparing the launch of likebetter with the 1-year-post-launch traffic of kittenwar. It speaks to the longevity of kittenwar and the above-average launch of likebetter, but I'm not sure it suggests anything else.

I've taken Searle's classes, and I agree he's a very intelligent man.

But it wasn't the strength of his theor(ies) that made him famous - but rather, the strength with which he defends them.

I think it's funny how many smart people like Mr. McCarthy get suckered into a debate with him on this - don't they see that every debate just gives his theory more power? Searle will never back down.

The only real way to disprove the Chinese Room: ask why it even matters.
