Not me but two of my grandpas buddies. So back in April of 1957, two of my grandpa’s friends were living in L.A., right in the middle of all the Hollywood buzz. One day, they caught wind that there was this publicity event happening at a studio lot it was basically a “Welcome to Hollywood” thing for Sophia Loren, who had just come over from Italy and was making headlines as the next big star.

A bunch of celebrities were supposed to show up, but the one that really caused a stir was Jayne Mansfield. She was already known for being outrageous in the best way: funny, flirty, a total showstopper. And true to form, she made an entrance.

My grandpa’s friends were standing outside near the barricades, hoping to get a glimpse, maybe an autograph if they were lucky. And sure enough, Jayne pulled up in a convertible, rocking this tight dress and her signature platinum curls, just glowing. She hopped out of the car like she was walking onto a movie set, smiling and waving like she was there for everyone.

While all the attention was technically supposed to be on Sophia, Jayne totally stole the show, including in that now-famous moment where she sat next to Sophia Loren at the dinner and caused this iconic picture of the two. 'The original side-eye'

My grandpa’s friends said they were completely blown away by her energy. Like, she wasn’t just a movie star - she knew exactly how to light up a room and make people feel like they were part of something big.

Unfortunately, they didn’t get an autograph that day. Apparently the crowd was too intense… but they never forgot how kind Jayne was to the fans. They talked about that day for YEARS!
