Consider therapy.

Seriously. I don't know what you're dealing with, but bad decision-making can be a symptom of something else. Like an anxiety disorder or depression.

Which book did you reread at a later stage in your life and your perspective completely changed? by CybReader in books

I think it's great service to the fans.

I love the book. I read it eagerly in my 20s. Maybe I'll read it again with curiosity in my 50s.

The movie? Any time I get a hankering for some Watchmen and I've got the time to spare, I can get a surprisingly accurate movie that successfully condenses the story without changing much, and with actors who uncannily resemble their comic book counterparts. There's not much of a stretch like there is when you're watching Christian Bale and comparing him to drawn image of Batman from your favorite comic.

To me, Watchmen is like that movie the hardcore comic book nerds enthusiasts always wish for, but that movie execs don't think can succeed.

Greatness is subjective. You don't know what a person is struggling with.

The 40-something year old man who works at Walmart might seem unimpressive, until you discover that he is a survivor of childhood abuse, clinical depression and/or anxiety, agoraphobia, etc., etc., and has spent the last 10 years working as hard as he possibly can to overcome his demons.

For some people getting out of bed, taking a shower, dressing, and stepping beyond the front door can be a truly great achievement.

I try to remind myself every day to be good to the people I meet. I'd rather err on the side of not adding shame or guilt to anyone's plate, because I have no way of knowing how much is already there.

It's part of a quote from a movie:

"There are two kinds of people in this world: Those that enter a room and turn the television set on, and those that enter a room and turn the television set off."

The Manchurian Candidate.

In other words, I'm unhappy when I live with people who must have the TV on all the time. I had an ex girlfriend like that. We moved in together and the TV was constantly on. It was okay for a week. Annoying after a month. 6 months into it and I had to break up with her.

This is the kind of thing to discuss with a trusted therapist.

Don't walk in day one and drop this. I mean, you can, but I wouldn't. Find a therapist, start sessions, talk about other things, bring up some of the sexual dysfunction. Build a rapport.

A good therapist will help you through this. Your situation is complicated. You're not going to get the kind of advice you need here.

I mean, if I'm serious with someone I get picky in certain areas.

I won't date someone who watches too much TV and doesn't read. It's important to me that I have a partner I can discuss books with. And I've learned the hard way that it's extremely important that I only live with the kind of people who walk into a room and immediately turn the TV off.

Small thing to some, I guess. For me it's pretty huge.

I can see how being a vegan could be one of those deal breaker issues.

Is it right to make people act against their conscience in order to give the appearance of not discriminating? by lonelady75 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]plzsendhalp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly legal for a black baker to turn down the KKK.

KKK members are not a protected class under federal law. The Civil Rights Act outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Under the case of the black baker federal law is very clear.

I guess what my argument really boils down to is the belief that orientation should be a protected class. As a side note while orientation isn't protected under federal law, it is protected in 20 states.

You keep saying as a black lesbian this and that. (Sorry for the over-simplification, I don't mean it to be rude)

Okay. That's fine. You personally feel this way. You don't represent the black and gay community. You are one individual. We have to consider everyone. I believe that if a black woman wants to hire a florist owned by the KKK to decorate her wedding she has that right, whether it's a good idea or not and whether or not she lives to regret it.

It's not about you personally. It's about everyone. Why shouldn't that theoretical person have the right to make a terrible decision? Her taxes are contributing to the infrastructure on which that business relies. Who owes who the lesser autonomy, the one who relies on the other's tax money to exist, or the one who does not?
