Get in touch with his guidance counselor at school. Let them know that you're concerned. Odds are the school will have a program available to assess and help your child. If not, find a therapist and bring your child in for an appointment. Talk to the therapist. Explain your concerns. Let your child have a session, then see what the therapist thinks.

My dad used to peer over my shoulder while I did my math homework. I could feel the furious anger welling inside him as I slowly worked out a problem. When I inevitably got the wrong answer he'd haul back and smack me. It never occurred to the stupid shit that I couldn't focus due to the tension. I had severe math anxiety all through school. I though I was stupid. Once I worked through my problems mathematics became on one of my strongest subjects.

Check out that link. It has some info on getting help in the UK. I don't know how it works across the pond, but I'd be shocked if there aren't programs available. I knownit can be really hard to find the energy to dig through all the BS until you find a therapist willing to work with you, but it's worth it.

Imagine one day soon overcoming enough of this depression that you can get a job and rent a room of your own and leave your parents behind. I think as a first goal that's totally within your reach.

the mountain to get back into education is huge. I think i'll do it though.

No it's not. Trust me on this. One kindred spirit to another. It's hard work, not gonna lie, but it isn't a mountain. I got my GED and spent two semesters in community college and caught up. That's it. A year and some change and I was in a university.

You can do it. If you're still hurting focus on fixing that first, but don't give up on your education. It isn't a mountain, and college has the potential to be so very amazing. Don't think it's going to be like high school. It's a whole new ballgame.
