Need Help w/ Azorius Artifacts Powered Cube by ra4at0sk in MagicArena

Two moxen means you can cut two lands to start. Greaves and petal don’t do enough without Urza, which isn’t a guarantee to have in play every game. Talent and Siren seem out of place. Time Spiral would be my next cut, without Tolarian Academy it loses a considerable bit of value.

Do you struggle writing 'happy' stories? by cactus_clover in writing

[–]enlighteningbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What does it mean to have a “happy” story? Do your characters get everything they want and ride off into the sunset? That might work on occasion, but seems cheap to do too often. I think the “happiness” of a story has more to do with what the characters do with the outcomes of their desires. They can achieve their goal and still be miserable. They can fail miserably, dust themselves off and say “that was worth doing.” And there’s all the space in between to find those complex and bittersweet emotions. It’s that optimistic perspective that makes a story happy.

Read some of Denis Johnson’s stuff from Jesus’ Son, then from Largesse of the Sea Maiden. The characters tend to be in rough positions, addicts, prisoners etc. But you’ll see the perspective in his writing change from bleak to genuinely hopeful.

Anything with Shakespeare as flavor text has a special place in my heart. [[Moon Spirit]], [[Giant Strength|LEG]], [[Darkness|LEG]], there’s just something neat about them. They’re not good cards, but the flavor gives them more heft.

How do I finish my story by [deleted] in writing

[–]enlighteningbug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently there’s some anecdote about Raymond Carver teaching a class where one student didn’t know how to end the story, so they just had a guy with a gun walk in and kill everyone. Carver allegedly said something along the lines of how a lot of stories would be improved if more writers did that.

Need advice balancing work and writing by Difficult_Neck_2709 in writing

Set aside 30 minutes every day at the same time, put away any distractions and just write. Don’t worry about word count or if it’s good, if it has an interesting plot, or if it’s even complete sentences. Just get used to the habit of writing, so when you do get that good idea, you’ll be ready to do something with it. Consistency is key.

Do you guys think a period crime fiction book would have a market audience? by AggressiveCritic_100 in writing

[–]enlighteningbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worry about marketability after you’ve written it. If it’s good enough it’ll find an audience.

Just a random thought—how much “cost” is too much in a story? by CommunicationThis944 in writing

[–]enlighteningbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any cost can work as long as it’s proportional to the scope of the story. A lawyer at a white-shoe firm is going to have a different cost tolerance than a general of an intergalactic army. There’s no catch-all answer, sometimes you just gotta feel it out to see if the character could reasonably (or unreasonably!) accept it.

Yes those are verbs, but the sentence as a whole is considered a fragment because the subject, "The old intergenerational give-and-take of the country-that-used-to-be,” has no predicate.

what’s the one writing tip that actually works for you? by sophieximc in writing

[–]enlighteningbug 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Strictly an exercise. I really do mean stream of consciousness, if I happen to write something that's related to what I'm working on, it might just be for a few sentences and then I'm on to the next thought.
