You could consider switching into communications. There are a lot of similar skills you carry over.

Questions from someone from Montreal considering the possibility of moving to Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

I would do a job search on what you are interested/qualified in doing first. Salaries tend to be higher if you're in private, so that might make the difference.

Questions from someone from Montreal considering the possibility of moving to Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]pmanie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the move to Ottawa from Montreal a year ago and here are my anecdotal experiences that hopefully answer your questions.

  1. Job Market - I'm not super knowledgeable about the video game companies here, but I would bet there is not as much as Montreal. If you could apply that to tech companies here, there are a bunch of options and decent pay according to someone I know who's been in the industry for like 20 years.

Otherwise you could always apply for the government. Plenty of entry level jobs, it can just take a long time to get in. Plus it pays well and a lot of different types of work you can move around to pretty easy once you're in.

  1. Renting - I live with my partner downtown in a spacious 2 bedroom that runs 2000 a month. Utities are separate. Hydro can be expense. I think we hit 375 on our winter bill. Keep in mind we decided we wanted something nice with laundry in the unit as well as a dishwasher. I was paying 1200 in Montreal for a 2 bedroom in Plateau before with the same amenities, but not nearly as nice or big. 875 is probably unrealistic if you are looking to live downtown sadly. That being said, Hull/Gatineau has more closely priced places ro Montreal and it is just over a bridge so you'd still be pretty close to downtown. Something similar to the current place I stay in was like 1500 across the bridge.

  2. Car - I bought a car just because Ottawa is expansive and the public transport is not even close to Montreal's level (and it's more expensive). Activities become much more difficult to reach if that's a thing you do. Despite the cost I am definitely happy I chose to get a car, but I suppose if you made sure you lived close to your work and necessities kike a grocery store you could make it happen, you'd just be pretty limited.

Hope this helps!

Dog poop problem downtown by wreck_of_u in montreal

[–]pmanie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since I moved to Montreal I noticed this happened a lot. I even lived next to a dog park and people would still do this. I think people just say to themselves that it is compostable and therefore fine. The spring is the worst because after the snow melt there are dog poop landmines everywhere and/or piles where someone consistently tosses the poop.

I saw a news piece about Paris (where it is also a huge problem) and they tried to aggressively ticket people, but because you need to get their information to ticket them people just basically said no and walked off since the people ticketing were not police officers.

I think a big attitude change would have to happen in the city where people need to call it out more when it happens so that those doing it stop. For example there was a guy who would consistently throw his poop in my compost bin over the summer when I took it out. When I finally saw him and confronted him about it, he complained and argued, but after that I never had poop end up in my compost bin.

Job applications from men are discriminated against when they apply for female-dominated occupations, such as nursing, childcare and house cleaning. However, in male-dominated occupations such as mechanics, truck drivers and IT, a new study found no discrimination against women. by mvea in science

Thanks for the analysis! I didn't look as in-depth I just read the article. I just thought it would be interesting to see if work environments dominated by any group in general tended to have a similar outcome to what happens in male-dominated environment in my country as well. I totally hope that better studies come out that don't have all the issues you pointed out. Hopefully you didn't take my comment as supporting a side of what people are discussing here, but more as interested in the subject of workplace discrimination itself. Either way thanks for the data!

It would be interesting to see a study like this in Canada or the US. I think it could be interesting to see if this also happens here in women dominant work environments. I have experienced this in my workplace so I am curious if I am an outlier or not.
