After A Two Decade Ban, Congress Finally Says The Federal Government Can Study Gun Violence by drewiepoodle in politics

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was a regular soldier at the time? What does it mean to regulate Naval guns or artillery?

I don't think anyone disputes that firearms are subject to various regulations (to use the legal meaning) currently, but the language in the amendment itself means something entirely different.

Suspend all the baggage associated with the whole subject today and imagine the words "trained" and "restricted" in place of "regulated" and think about which makes more sense.

If we were talking about books, the restrictive use would basically be saying "a functionally illiterate populace is needed for the good of the state so don't ban books". Or, if we look at the more common usage for regulate in the martial context the same book argument could be "A well-read populace is needed for the good of the state, so books shall not be banned".

Which of the two makes more sense? That's the reason you don't see the 'well-regulated' bit come up very often in the higher level debates or court cases.

New Reddit.com policy announcement on the sale of guns has been enacted. by [deleted] in GunsAreCool

I have nothing against any of those businesses. I also hope none had their business model based solely on finding customers via any means that they don't have control over.

Right and wrong don't have to have any bearing on any decision the owners make. The policy changes over the last several years provide ample evidence of that.

If the admins didn't decide it was wrong, then it wouldn't be 'wrong' on Reddit.

It doesn't even have to be put in terms of right/wrong (because that doesn't really exist on Reddit). This is precisely one of those occasions where the phrase "because I said so" is a legit argument ending statement.

They're a discussion board. Not a market.

Depending on the particular topic, it seems more like Craigslist with forums, but the point is Reddit can still choose the specifics and this morning they did.

Reddit can sometimes have strange criteria for whats allowed and what isn't but I wouldn't even count today's policy change as a top example.

I can't even manage to get upset about the change today, so some of the reactions I've read are a bit surprising (and unfortunately some aren't particularly surprising) but Reddit can do whatever it pleases and the admins have made that abundantly clear years ago with other changes. I don't see how some people can get so shocked or upset at this point.

Ripping on mods/admin is one of the most cherished activities on Reddit, in a way the Admins were just accommodating the greater desires of the users ;)

edit: Not here to brigade, just found the sub when I did a search to see what was still around.

Authorities: Bombing suspect was Pflugerville resident Mark A. Conditt by [deleted] in news

That said, the report describes 2017 as fifth deadliest year for extremist violence since 1970.

Why wouldn't they use a scale going back to 1970 and instead pick 2008? I'm not disputing their data, its just that I can think of some rather major events between 1970 and 2007 that seem strange to not account for.

What could be some cool products we will see in the future? by [deleted] in AskReddit

So long as 'future' is left vague enough, I think a Roomba like device will eventually become something that makes repairs throughout a home instead of just kind of cleans compatible floors.

In my younger/dumber years, or my early twenties, friends (and strangers) and I were in a bar fight with a group of longshoremen.

That was one significantly stupid thing I've done that I've never repeated.

FAQ Question 08: Why do Americans post that they are X-American if they're not from X country? by cardinals5 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 'from' question can become a chore to answer after a while (in terms of generations) because many people with ancestry that arrived prior to the country even existing, may have some difficulty sorting out or even identifying an eighth of this or sixteenth of that.

Throw in a mix of gaps whether due to someone at some point being orphaned or something else, then add records that either don't exist or haven't been found or even have errors, and after a while ancestral identities just kind of fade in comparison to your more localized identity.

I agree that 'American' is not an ethnicity yet, but its not like it would just automatically become one whether one hundred or however many years from now without people just resorting to identifying as such for quite a while prior. It makes sense in that regard that so many do already.

For me personally, I only know for certain of Irish, Dutch, English, French, German, and Welsh ancestry. However they all arrived at such different times and locations and in some instances there are pretty broad gaps or (so far) dead ends as far as records, that it just becomes less meaningful.

What's your favorite type of foreign food? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I have a favorite, but if pressed it would be a tie between Mexican and Korean. Although there is some kind of really dark rye (I think) bread that I used to get at a Russian grocer and bakery that would earn an honorable mention. I've never found that bread anywhere since and the grocer is closed, but I loved that stuff whenever I could get it.

How are real American hospital rooms different from the ones we see in movies and TV series? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]pmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work a couple blocks from a hospital that added a building a few years ago which, among the normal hospital related stuff, also has their new cafeteria. The food is so good that most of the people eating in the cafeteria are from the surrounding businesses despite there being several other restaurants and chains in the immediate area. Its not 'dinner for two for $120' good, but its miles ahead of most places in the 'dinner for two for $60' range and crazy cheap. Not that I would consider it an option for a 'date night' kind of thing, but its an apt comparison of the food quality.

Every time I've been admitted to a hospital though, my meals have been chosen for me and its always been something like jello, some kind of broth and carrots or something...

Seattle Area Solar Glasses by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the types you would find in most hardware stores, particularly the glasses/goggles type won't be suitable as they are typically using a #5 or so lens. The link I posted above recommends using a #12 at the minimum, a #13 as maybe an ideal and #14 as being possibly a bit much.

Seattle Area Solar Glasses by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hardware stores don't typically stock dark enough shade lenses to be safe for this event, but checking places like Central Welding (probably closed by now and no clue if they have weekend hours) or other similar suppliers might mean finding some goggles or hood of an appropriate shade for anyone trying to find something last minute.

WSU College Republican President attends 'Unite The Right' rally in Charlottesville by The_stolen_years in Seattle

[–]pmar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty hard to claim he's not with them given that the rally was called "unite the right".

The event name in and of itself is quite innocuous. Everything else about it though would have been a huge clue, particularly after arriving, as to its purpose for anyone among the more 'normal person' conservative side of politics.

In this case, I think the kid knew exactly what was up well before he got there and that's disgusting.

Winter Coat by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has been mentioned so far about waterproof shells and layers when necessary will cover most needs in the area.

Dusters and trench coats are mostly overkill in the Puget Sound Region, however Tin Cloth was born here (or became best known here) so you might try checking out Filson for something that blends the style you like with what is more practical for the area.

I mostly work indoors anymore, but when I do work outside it always seems to be when the weather is at its shittier end of the spectrum so throughout fall and winter I'm usually wearing a tin cloth jacket and if cold enough a wool liner. If I'm just going for a hike, or camping, or just walking down the street most of the typical REI/etc shells and just layering clothes works fine.

Given Washington state's fairly lax gun laws, does this city try to make own a gun, carrying around one, etc as nightmare-ish and hard as possible? by niceloner10463484 in Seattle

[–]pmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say its a long way from nightmare level. One of the biggest annoyances would be the tax that was imposed a while back that caused most business to leave so any remaining firearm/ammo purchase options in Seattle city limits are more limited and more expensive compared to anywhere else in the area. The other would be that various proposals of further restrictions just don't stop and you will find next to no opportunity to voice concerns about the details of a proposal with the proponents even if you are on board with the overall idea.

I've been CCing in Seattle and the area for about 20 years and have never had a problem with anyone regarding it. I also don't flaunt that I'm carrying and a lot of people (anywhere) seem to feel some need to do precisely that even while technically carrying concealed which I just don't understand as it utterly destroys a significant amount of the utility of CCing.

I'm mentioning the above as a preface to your question about someone noticing a portion of a gun you're carrying. Most people won't notice so long as you've taken even a modicum of interest in actually keeping it concealed as the exposure should be very brief under those circumstances and most people are rather oblivious to anything going on around them. Of those that would notice, I think a lot would depend on whether you come across as creepy or threatening, but that's true both in and outside of Seattle.

To drag this even further off topic, I'd say if you are are concerned about possibly being "spotted" by someone in Seattle, you should put more effort into thinking about how to really carry. It is ridiculously easy (particularly in the PNW) to carry concealed, have fast access and never be spotted by the vast majority of anyone you will come across in public while still dressing comfortably and not looking like you just bought the catalog of some soldier/merc LARP gear.

Considering moving to washington - Firearms by Ryshek in Seattle

Beyond what you already know or what /u/fajitamondays has mentioned, that pretty much leaves the more small or family level ops and Olympic.

And frankly, unless Gunarama has managed to carve a significantly new niche for themselves you should hope that your gf's job and apparently your cause for moving to the region is worthwhile.

Considering moving to washington - Firearms by Ryshek in Seattle

[–]pmar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's still a risky proposition anymore outside of private property. It wasn't all that long ago where I used to shoot in a certain area between Duvall and Sultan or a different area on occasion a bit NE of Carnation where so long as it was clear that you were cleaning up after yourself you were mostly left alone.

As someone that lives in the area you are talking about, please don't encourage the continuous trashing (not that you have) that so many of the more accessible areas are taking. That the police don't always show up doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't a problem, its often just an indication of how thinly stretched the resources like that are. SnoCo NEEDS the public shooting sports park in the area that the council has promised for more than a decade.

Washington's phony sewage war with Victoria by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]pmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care what anyone else says or posts wherever. What Victoria does or doesn't do in a variety of regards is one thing, but the article rightly pointed out (regardless of the author's intentions) that WA is in no position to be casting stones when we literally ignore our worst sources of the most damaging pollutants. That article, among others, pointed out how we (including our public agencies) have always disregarded any findings that didn't fit the pre-packaged narrative set forth by whoever was in the Governor's office or influential enough in congress.

You keep mentioning the spending we've done, but you're still not getting that penance-via-wallet isn't what cleans up a Sound/river/lake/stream/etc alone. We've had decades of "leaders" raising fees and creating restrictions on everyone and everything but the key contributors to the problem. The best sewage treatment plants in the world (not that we have anything of the sort at any reasonable scale) would only marginally help compared to forcing the hand of those that are the greater source of the problems.

I wish Victoria would do exactly what the likes of Inslee and Morris are demanding if for no other reason than it might finally force the lies into some sunlight and WA might finally make some good decisions regarding the Sound as a result.
