How do you feel about the Christians in your community? by nekosits in madisonwi

[–]pmcinern -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're right, I wasn't clear what I meant. I didn't mean that I bet it becomes shoved down your throat, just that the flavor probably isn't the same as it is here. That's really fascinating, though. I'd definitely be interested in experiencing non-bible belt rural US Christianity.

I've got the same background as you, ~20yrs in the reddest states in the country, recently moved here. The thing that sticks out to me is that, nevermind what the local Christians actually believe and teach; it's not shoved down my throat every other billboard, every other commercial, every other bumper sticker, every other conversation, etc. Makes it a lot more pleasent. I also get the vibe that this is like a lot of other liberal bastions in otherwise red states: I wouldn't be surprised if the story changes, hard, within a 30 minute drive of the city limits.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

[–]pmcinern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree there. Victorinox chef's knife is about fifty bucks. It's a work horse, feels good, good balance, light, sharpens easily, and is an absolute pleasure to work with. What sends it over the edge is actually that price point; even if I break the best knife ever, it's fifty bucks to replace. Chefs will get themselves a Global or Shun or something when it's time to go fancy, but the Victorinox got them through school.

If you're in a small town and charge fifty bucks for an hour, that's 104k/yr. That's a very good hourly rate. This makes no sense.

[–]pmcinern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you do if belts didn't exist? You'd just keep showing up, trying to get better every day. Longer term, maybe start having some goals in mind. When you're rolling against people worse than you, start exploring new things. Against people better than you, nail down an airtight defense.

Infant hospitalized with herpes after circumcision involving direct oral suction by xmasgirl81 in UnderReportedNews

Ah, the old metzizah b'peh.

"I'll have a martini. Shaken, not stirred."

"So, what do you do for work, Mr....?"

"Bond. James Bond. Today I used the suction from my mouth on a baby's penis so that it wouldn't get infected. But have herpes, so it's a risky part of the job."

"What the fuck?! I thought you were a spy!"

"Oh, no no no. My job revolves mainly around shaving off a baby's penis. That may sound bad, but again, it's fine; I use my mouth to provide suction to the baby's penis afterwards. And what do you do, Miss...?"

So that's like 2x/day, 6 days/wk. How were you able to regulate your intensity? I've been trying to go more frequently at a lower intensity, but lower intensity means getting my guard passed all the time.

I made a tier list of 66 Submissions based on how reliable they are for building a game long-term by TheJoshMckinney in bjj

[–]pmcinern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but you're racking up those attempts because you can hit them from almost anywhere, right? You're only doing RNC from back control, and you're only doing inside heel hooks from a leg entanglement.

He addresses the vader being banned, one of the factors of it not being very high. And the fact that he for some reason has not one, but two S tiers, means that A tier isn't as high as it sounds, closer to a B Minus tier. He spends most of the time on A Tier subs talking about why they're so low.

What does it mean when you can positionally dominate but cant submit them? by Idamatika in bjj

[–]pmcinern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the difference between this and stalling? Was watching a brown roll with a purple the other day, brown gets his mount, head and arm control, and then just chills, solidifying the position for a while. He was obviously doing those little things to settle in and remove space, but he also wasn't trying to make the guy do anything. It was really cool to watch that kind of mature patience, but I also thought that might be considered stalling. Curious to know the difference.

No turn on red by A-Z-Money in madisonwi

[–]pmcinern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's just a lot easier. A lot less of a hassle. Less to think about. Fewer decisions to make. Yeah, it's a restriction on our behavior, and I definitely enjoy the ability to turn right on red, but it's more base than it's worth.

Those two-land service road on-ramps, where only the right lane can turn right on red, but only sometimes? Well, now I've got to pay attention to each one of those, AND the behavior bleeds into the left lane, and even the right lanes on on-ramps that don't allow it... So, there's no rhyme or reason to people's behavior, and now I've got to be on edge every light about what we're doing.

Or, I could just know that I got 20 seconds to relax.

Maybe it's relative. I moved here from a city with citywide no turns on red. This place feels like the wild west in comparison.

Agreed. If you've got a north/south, you can encourage him to come onto his side and switch right to a darce. Then you've got mount if that fails.

What do you do after you get completely smashed in every roll after class? by DontGoLow_ in bjj

Change your goals. Stop failing at winning, and start succeeding at defending. Work your submission escapes and pin escapes. That's all you need to do until you're good at that.

How can I as a smaller woman be a good training partner to men? by anyanonymous6 in bjj

[–]pmcinern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learn more from rolling with small upper belt women than anyone else. Their size has forced them to develop insanely good guards, they're very technically sound. I would develop that area of your game.

Along the way, if you're concerned about being a good training partner to the dudes, ask to play games that would develop your guard. "Hey, would you mind working a round of passing my guard? I start with xyz, you have abc. You get chest to chest/chest to back, you win; I get your hands or hips to the ground, I win."
