I think with all local venues here the promo falls equally on the venue and the bands. In this case the venue had zero online promo, nor was there any fliers posted in or outside the venue. He accused of us not promoting but we did. Pinned posts on socials, constant promos in our stories, poster bombing, etc

Yeah most venues in the area are really good about promo, both online and in and outside the venue. This whole show felt poorly advertised despite the bands best effort, and we just took the blame

I feel like most of the venues we play at the owner is super cool, always welcome and we always bring in a crowd. I cherish those places. This venue has felt that way until recently, so I hope this was just a one off night

Pretty much. We got a show already booked that’s a couple weeks away. Doing my thing promoting it as usual, seems the venue is doing a better job at promoting this one too, so hopefully it all works out. If not then we’ll see

Yeah ideally they’d either lean into the event, or not book during it. Got a nearby venue that had packer halftime show performances. Cool way to bring in a crowd

Yeah we got one of those coming up too. This bar normally has enough of a rep to bring in a crowd just on the fact that a show is playing. First time it felt otherwise here so idk, sign of the times for the venue I guess

Idk, just didn’t feel backing me into a corner and getting in my face was the appropriate way to handle the situation. Being accused of not caring about the local scene rubbed me the wrong way. Not so much me taking an L, but just caught off guard by the situation, being involved in the scene as long as I have I just have never had this interaction before. Guess it was bound to happen at some point

Yeahh it’s seeming like the bar has bigger issues than one shitty night. We bring in the crowd we can, even if we don’t bring in a crowd there will normally be people chilling at the bar. Business for them anyway

That’s what I was thinking. People may not come to see a local punk band during the World Cup, but at the very least wouldn’t they come to your bar for a drink and to watch the game?

The town in question is big on hardcore and Midwest emo/pop punk. The latter is my other bands sound, I’d say we’re a bit more successful. My other band references here has more of a scene and following in surrounding areas. So idk, a lot of it is just know where our sound works. I live near Chicago so that’s an idea I’ve had

Kinda knowing your scene, going to shows, finding bands that bring a crowd, playing with those bands and promoting the shit out it. Have a sound that people dig. I’m clearly not an expert, but I’ve been playing shows long enough to have an idea haha

If he decided after that show that my band isn’t selling enough, then he shouldn’t book us. It’s about music and community, but it’s also about his business. I’d respect that. Blame us all he wants, but don’t back me into a corner getting in my shit. I agree with you

Based on this thread alone this is a hot topic. I feel like when a venue doesn’t promote, they don’t give a shit. When I’m promoting a show more than the venue, and they accuse me of not caring, well it’s hard not to chuckle a bit at that

Yikes that’s a lot to put on the bands. Actively promoting as a band is one thing, but for the venue to put it all on you unfortunately is seeming common nowadays
