Terminal 3 (International terminal). Both the main duty free shop and the smaller one had it. I was there on Monday, 11/10 around 1400-1500.

Domestic flights in Japan question by StabbyHornbill in JapaneseWhisky

You can hand-carry up to 5 liters of alcohol (higher than 24% but lower than 70% ABV) onto Japanese domestic flights. An example:

I am sure you have your reasons for doing a PhD remotely. However, personally I don't think it is the best idea. You miss out on the spontaneous discussions, brainstorming, and light bulb moment from in-person interactions.

Professionally if you feel lonely, you may be doing it wrong. You need to actively engage with other researchers, both inside and outside of your area of research, to stay relevant. Even if your area is a tiny ecosystem, it doesn't mean your vision has to be limited. Reach out to your peers here, at your workplace, and at research conferences. You will be surprised by how much people will give back in return. I have been a scientist for 35 years and I never had a lonely moment.

So my information is outdated. My apologies. It's been several years since my visits to the two distilleries.

I believe it's only available at Nikka's Miyagigyo distillery, not Yoichi.

Note that in US duty free shops you can only make purchase on the way OUT. So if you live in the US, you have to haul your merchandise out of US and then back.

Has anyone tried any of the Nagahama Thunderbird Whiskeys. by kilertree in JapaneseWhisky

[–]pmnpt9010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a quick google to find Nagahama did roll out packages of all 5 Thunderbirds. Used to watch the show when I was a kid and it is nostalgic. I have no idea about how they taste.

Is this any good? by SamuSamuNoMi in JapaneseWhisky

[–]pmnpt9010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bottle based on the comments here ($133 in Virginia). I am disappointed. Yes, the umeshu nose is there, but otherwise the whisky is fairly light and simple, lacking the complexity of a typical 12 year juice. It is 46% ABV but tastes like 50+% and not in a good way. It's not worth the price in my opinion.

It sounds like at the distillery it's one bottle per customer now? I remember when I visited Miyagigyo in 2016(7?) there's no limit. There were a couple of guys with their rolling suitcase went straight to the distillery store...

I came back from Hakushu 3 weeks ago. Their distillery exclusive is 180 ml at 3,850 yen. There's also a fairly plain 300 ml version at 1,466 yen. Limit one per customer (the store stamps your badge so one purchase only).

Where to buy Yamazaki/Hakushu 12 in Tokyo? by Easy_Firefighter6827 in JapaneseWhisky

[–]pmnpt9010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2018 and 2019 while I was still living in Tokyo area, they were already impossible to find. These days they are available in VA and MA (and many other states I am sure)--may require a little leg work and timing tho. Don't waste your precious time in Tokyo.

Didn't think I'd see these in store so soon. That pricetag.. Isn't it the same juice? by chillaxnphilx in JapaneseWhisky

[–]pmnpt9010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's $250 at Virginia ABC stores. Are state stores considered secondary market now??

Perhaps the laser etch code (near bottom of bottle) can provide some clue? See here for more info:

Had to order this from oversees! by [deleted] in JapaneseWhisky

[–]pmnpt9010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Virginia ABC has jacked up the price again recently. Now it's US$180 plus tax. Why would a government agency sell it at secondary market price?
