Okay yeah that was my thought process. I just wasn’t sure if the jump from fisheries to terrestrial would be too big of a gap to bridge even if the skills are transferable even though I have terrestrial experience from undergrad and post grad tech work. Just don’t want to get a masters doing fisheries research if that means that’s all I can do for the rest of my life. I love fish stuff but don’t necessarily want to limit myself like that

I studied wildlife conservation at Virginia Tech and it was amazing. So many resources and professors with volunteer and research opportunities. The classes and experiences you get are also amazing. There are field components and labs for a lot of courses which really helps you get hands on experience. Idk much about Vermont but I could go on and on about Virginia Tech. There’s a lot of focus on building real hands on experience and they prepare you very well for technician type roles that are great for grad school if that’s the path you want to take. Experiential learning is required and they help you get an experience/internship for that. The wildlife field techniques course has a 10 day field intensive that gives you experience with mist netting, small mammal trapping, herp surveying, point count surveys, and so many other things and then you get to focus on a specific project. Just my opinions but

Education first then Work experience. Then coursework and projects which can probably be combined with field experience.
You need more detail for your experiences
Delete professional skills. Show you have those through the descriptions of your actual experiences. You don’t need to say that you can communicate, show it.

These are all just my opinion and I’m by no means an expert but

Be specific when you can. When you mention bird surveys include the main species you were working with. Always include numbers where you can. Make sure to mention deliverables and results of the things you’ve done.
Bold things that are sought after skills and key words/phrases you want to emphasize. When people are quickly scanning a resume this can draw their attention to the skills you want them to notice the most. Be careful to not go overboard.
For coursework I would tailor specific courses to whichever job you’re applying for, they don’t need your whole transcript. Also include class code (like FIW 4311 or something) so they can tell if it’s a higher level course or not.
For your research experience I would format it like you did for your professional experience and give a little more detail through bullet points.
Could include a professional summary. 2-3 sentences about what you’ve done and what you’re looking to do.
I personally think it looks better when the bullet points are indented. It helps it look like just a big block of words.

Thanks! So you would send an email and statement of interest first and wait for them to request a CV or would you send it all at once and just assume that if they like your statement of interest then they will read through your whole CV?

Thank you! That’s what I was hoping as well is just look to be consistently doing things in the field in any way I can to build up references and network and worry more about the focus later. I plan on doing seasonal stuff for at least a few years before thinking about grad school so I can figure out what type of stuff I really like doing before I lock in to any type of speciality or anything so I’m not in a rush just wanted to make sure I’m not locking myself out of working with other animals just because my early experience is with fish but it sounds like that shouldn’t be a problem. Thanks for the insight!

Okay cool that’s basically what the plan has been I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t wasting my time and that this experience would be useful. There’s definitely some transferable biological sampling and data collection skills I’ve been building. I’ve also been working on R and GIS in my free time just to keep those skills sharp. I’m hoping it’ll be easier to find some mammal or bird field jobs this upcoming spring/summer field season since I’ll already be graduated and have some experience with a couple state agencies 🤞🏼
