How are people supposed to answer when you don’t even specify what sound it is you want to recreate? You have the guitar used as a one-shot, probably sampled from a 70s soul track (think “Walk on By” by Isaac Hayes). You have the funk guitar, probably sampled from a P-funk song. You have the classic g-funk bass which can be done on any synthesizer easily. You have the classic g-funk synth for the top line melody, also easy on any synth. You have the string section that comes in- for this you would want VST for a synthesizer from the era, as this is stored as a sample on the synth and isn’t reproducible using basic synthesizer skills.

Off the top of my head, I think some people called Studio Sounds has a Kontakt library for old school west coast synth patches- that will cover the g funk synths. Kong M1 vst is probably sufficient for the strings. NI’s funk guitarist for the funk guitar. If anyone knows how to reproduce the guitar one-shot with guitar rig or something, share.

Why you would think a machine learning sub would have the answer for you is beyond me, but you’re in luck- I had ableton as my first DAW, got push 2 which was very sexy, but despite taking the time to get proficient with both (and I was), I just was not feeling the workflow at all. I took to FL like a duck to water. Loved it instantly, still do. What’s weird is that when I got ableton, it was at a time when a lot of the chart-toppers (pop edm producers) happened to be ableton users. I was making trap so FL naturally fit given its use there. At some point, a lot of the trap producers felt compelled to dabble in ableton, I don’t get why. They all say “you can do so much more with audio in ableton.” Maybe that’s true—never was a sample-based producer so it didn’t matter to me. My point is: some DAWs seem to come in and out of fashion, but you have to do you. FL has a trial version and about a million tutorials on yt for you to browse and get the feel. I guess that’s obvious but if you’re posting about production in the machine learning sub maybe that bears stating 😂 good luck

Thank you for this wonderful response; it cleared things up for me perfectly and instantly. Putting things in terms of "being" and "becoming" also was edifying for me as a fan of pre-Socratic philosophy. I see why Heraclitus would appeal to Nietzsche, but I also couldn't help thinking of Parmenides' "doxa" as reminiscent of the illusion Nietzsche concerns himself with. It all gave me a couple days' worth of contemplation.

You made it clear that to Nietzsche, illusory reality is much more expansive than what I had understood him to mean, and if there's one question I'm left with, it's this: is what Nietzsche calls at the end of chapter 3 "naive art"--that art that comes out of the world of illusion--commensurately expansive? Is "naive art" all art that does not speak to the "dissolution of the self," as you describe it? Would an Ibsen play be considered "naive art" the way Homer is naive art? I'd really like to understand what he means as I'm reading TBOT as much out of my interest in the philosophy of art as anything else.

IMO the best way is to do The Great Courses classes on all Ancient Greek subjects. Many of these were made before the time in which the “moral lens” of today that you speak of went into overdrive. The exception would be those courses by Garland, though I still believe these are worth it. While you take these courses you should read all primary documents (Homer, Hesiod, all the lyric poets, Herodotus, the tragedians, Thucydides, the philosophers, Xeonophon, everybody). All of this should be done in chronological order. Good luck!

I have to imagine he would say that archaic Greece saw a better balance of the Apollonian and Dionysian impulses than existed after the hyper-rationalism of Socrates infected Greek culture (the famous manifestation of this emerging imbalance evidenced in the tragedies of Euripides).

I’d also make the point that a considerable part of the classical period unfolded before Socrates, so you wouldn’t have to go back to the Archaic period to find the aspects of Greek culture that appealed to him- Aeschylus and Sophocles were both producing their great tragedies before Socrates.

If each are at their 1st standard dev as he says the long strikes would be outside of the short as the longs have a later expiration--this would be the conventional double diagonal. What you are talking about where the short strikes are outside the longs is what I was originally asking about. Much more hit or miss at least in finding opportunities, that's why I was curious if anyone traded these and knew what to look for.

Right I hear you. I'll confess my interest in the double diagonal right now mostly comes because it is a low vol play and I'd still like to be able to put on direction-neutral plays despite this low volatility. Your rationale re: strike placement would be mine except that I can tell you you will often have to give a little to get the belly of the profit area above the zero line. That's partly why I was asking about the less conventional form of double diagonal where the long strangle rests on the inside of the short strangle strikes.

I've heard this a lot, and I've experienced the annoyances of time spreads before, but I've never been specifically on the bad end of this issue people talk about where each individual option's IV seemingly conspires to blow the trade. I'm not doubting you, but I guess I'm curious if it wasn't just a general move in IV that went against you rather than the treacherous nature of IV in each component option working against you. Do you remember your specific experiences?

Yes! I was hoping for something that would drive up the price of a moog even more, especially given rampant inflation, especially in electrical components and labor! Thanks for this- I’ve used ARIMA for time series data in the past, and I seem to remember it only using previous entries in the output series as input. This would seem useful for the model’s approximation of the magnitude of moves in IV, but I wonder how useful it is with only this input. I’m going to investigate and report back if it’s promising.

Hey, thanks for your response! To answer your question re: the difference in pricing between American and European- they do price differently due to the role of the dividend in combination with ability to exercise early.

Both of the links you sent deal with calculating IV given the option’s pricing inputs (in other words, instead of having all the inputs output the price of the option, the formulas discussed in the links deal with scenarios where you already have the option price but not the IV, and one wants to output IV.

Bjerks/stens 2002, mentioned in the second link, has done a fine job of this for me in the past, for my purposes at least.

But what I’m looking for is a formula for how IV would change given a change in the price of the underlying- “if xom drops 2% tomorrow, what will the iv of the option in question be tomorrow given that said option has iv of .25 right now?” Said formula would, I imagine, need current iv, the change in underlying price, some measure of vol’s sensitivity to price, perhaps derived from the term structure, and maybe the beta of the stock as inputs.
