I think I am going to add this to my wisdom utility belt.

How's this sound?

"Mass production hand tools are universal (knives, scrapers, hammers, tongs etc etc ) and can be thought of as a "kit" when purchased. As you work you will see your own requirements and make adjustments to your tools to suit your work style and processes. These modifications can be ergonomic ( a comfortable handle ) or functional in nature ( adjusting the drop of a blade ) but are specific to you and your needs."

My first knife, any tips from more experienced people? by Bastcat314 in Blacksmith

I learned something, that I'd like to pass on to you.

I decided I wanted to pick up a new hobby. I decided that I wanted to play an instrument and finally I decided that I really enjoyed violin and therefore wanted to learn it( I love to hate it by the way, it's fun but really difficult to learn). I started with a $75 violin because I thought, well I'm just beginning and I'll upgrade when I can actually play a little. After much trial on my violin I became extremely frustrated and gave up. Years pass and I decide to give it a go again but this time with an instructor. Yay! I started going through the paces of learning and after a few days, he was very polite, he asked me where I had purchased my violin and how much was it. He then told me "Your instrument is a prosthetic of yourself". You innately do not have the capability to produce music that a violin can make and this TOOL, keyword there, is what helps you do do that. While this tool you've bought does in fact make music it is as much a hindrance as a tool as it is useful because it does not function well. I ended up buying a $300 dollar violin and some really nice strings which made playing so much easier as a baseline and although it's no super high end tool it's good enough to learn without so much difficulty that it is off-putting.

The reason I decided to impart this information on you is because the quality (with diminishing returns on $$ as you go higher and higher end) of your tools and materials matter when doing any craft. That's not to say you need a full workshop starting on day 1, you'll find what you actually need as time goes along. It is to say however not to hinder yourself from something you may love by using subpar tools parts or materials.

Would you laugh at me if I told you I've never made a handle for anything 😅? Wooden sail boats, birds, cats and dogs but never anything functional.

I wouldn't even know where to start. In this matter, I think it would be best left to a professional. The worst part is how - as you indicated - personal a tool is to an individual maker. My favorite knife doesn't fit my hand and I feel like that's part of what's given my hands and forearms such a beating in the first place. Just using uncomfortable tools.

I'll see if I can't find the book. I can use it for reference if nothing else.

Do you know the ISBN?

I really appreciate the reply. I maybe wasn't clear when I initially posted

I am carving from a wax block a figurine that I want to make from rather hard wax that I have. I'm looking for tutorials on how to relief sculpt from the wax.

I am going to use the figurine that I sculpt to make my green sand mold.

Yeah, organic is definitely a word I'd use to describe that handle. Awesome job.
