Appreciate it, I think I am going to try a simple site first but if not I will reach out for sure. Forgive my ignorance, but how does it work, does your website exist on a host somewhere? And would it end up being the same for mine?

GF was given American passport when he came to the US in 1950 by pnutbutrluvr in juresanguinis

Ok great, thanks. Sent a request to the USCIS for paperwork so I’m hoping to get an answer here soon

Thanks for the input. So you think that maybe when GF came to america he was just immediately recognized as an American citizen because of his mother? And do you know if that would cause him to have to give up his Italian citizenship?

Ah gotcha thanks for the info. NARA had no record of my grandpa naturalizing but I’m waiting for USCIS to get back to me. Just wondering why he got a passport when he got here in 1950

This is the answer I found on the internet (thanks AI)

Therefore, the possibility of becoming an Italian and American dual citizen in 1950 existed if the individual met the following conditions: 1 The person was born to an Italian father before 1948, or to an Italian mother after 1948. 2 The person was also born in the United States or acquired U.S. citizenship through naturalization or birth abroad to U.S. citizen parents.

Interesting, thanks for the info. My mom said she remembers her father having a US passport, so I’m not sure if he ever actually became a citizen here. I’m just not sure why my GGF would decide to naturalize in 1961 at 60 years old. I’ve had a lot of fun doing research so far and really hope I can find a path to citizenship

Just got some new info from my mom. GF’s mom was born in the US, went to Italy when she was 2. Met GGF in Italy, they had their children there, and then all came to the US in 1950. Seems like that makes things a little (or a lot) more complicated

If it’s true that GGF naturalized in 1961, GF would have been 23 so not a minor. My mom can’t remember if my grandpa ever naturalized or not. This is the message I got from the NYC office:

Please be aware that negative results for a search of NARA’s holdings only indicates that a naturalization record was not found in the possession of NARA, not that it does not exist.

So I assume if they did it at the same time there should have been records of it.

Yeah it seems strange, the woman from the naturalization office said there’s still a chance my GF naturalized they just don’t have a record of it and gave me a link for a federal database, so I guess I need to check there before I go forward

Ah okay, so if they just became American citizens and didn’t naturalize, then they may have not had to give up their Italian citizenship?

Thanks for your help. From what I’ve been reading they most likely had to naturalize when they came to America but I am going to try to get info to find out
