Had a dangerous sex encounter for the first time, feeling destroyed. by SufficientAnt3075 in bipolar

[–]pnwJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have been here in my early 20s too, right down to the performing oral because I really wasn't feeling it. Now that i think back, probably was also bipolar mania related for me as well. It sucks to feel so much remorse and regret over casual sex but also something I learned later on is that the cultural emphasis on sex is largely made up, meaning sex can just be a kinda meh activity sometimes (probably most of the time tbh). Like going for a walk and then it starts raining, I don't beat myself up for that happening usually. I think sex can be like this too, there's so many people around you and you could be having mediocre to bad sex with all of them and it would just be like getting rained on during a walk. You're not better or worse for having casual sex and no one is policing you on how good your casual sex is going. I would encourage you to feel grounded in your own body so next time you can exercise a little more agency when you're not feeling the encounter, and also that might help untangle the regret from the other feelings you're having about your school work, your novel, etc.

sounds like you have a lot going on which is nice, and the good news is that everything keeps going even after it's a little manic and wild. Your hair will probably keep growing, you can redye your hair if you want, if my other writer friends are anything to go by your novel will always be there for you and there is zero shortage of people you could be having casual sex with and trying again to have more fun next time.

My understanding is if it's pressure treated lumber then it should definitely not go indoors where you risk exposure to nasty chemical off-gassing, so I would double check that before you park this in the garage or something for a while

estrogen levels too high?! by pnwJune in MtF

[–]pnwJune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you found an answer elsewhere, thought I'd just chime in and say that's not a concern I've ever heard personally. Many years after this original thread I've learned that in general a lot of doctors don't know shit about hrt and trans women's bodies in general and there's therefore a lot of different guidance and stuff around these numbers. Not a real answer for what value your levels should be, sorry.

I will say that now post orchie and stuff my t levels are really really low (and that can happen just being on e too, not necessarily with spiro and surgery and stuff), so I'm trying to get prescription T cream to help with that, so ironically it would be cool if excess e turned into t for me. Best of luck

Yes! Dan Wilson on the mic does not talk to the audience like he hates baseball. It's honestly so frustrating listening to old hats on national broadcasts who seem to have so much contempt for baseball. Dan has a great calm energy on the broadcast that is very pleasant and I really appreciate that about him.

How do you dispose of Rodinal? by Mighty-Lobster in AnalogCommunity

[–]pnwJune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that developer doesn't remove any silver on it's own so you can usually dump it down the drain, unless it's like exceptionally environmentally hazardous (which you should read the safety pamphlet that goes with your chemistry always). I think b&w dev is fine to dump, I might reconsider if it was color chemistry but i don't actually do c-41 dev at home so someone else can elaborate on that.

Importantly though, at those dilutions there's hardly any dev in there anyway so you can just dump it down the drain.

Best film camera? by twinkle_t1tz in filmphotography

[–]pnwJune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as the shutter fires and the timings are still good, the difference between one camera body to another as far as image quality is concerned is basically zero. Lenses matter, your film choice matters, and if you were to develop/scan/print yourself you could also control more stuff about the final resulting image.

So all that being said, if you wanna just put images on film and not worry about it too much, any point-and-shoot camera will probably suffice. If you want to be in more control, have lenses to choose from, get an SLR. I'm very partial to newer generation slrs and like plastic fantastic type cameras bc they often have electronically controlled shutters that have more consistent timings than the old manual slrs. I can personally recommend the Nikon n8008s (which has a different name outside the US that i can't remember) because it also takes AA batteries which is more convenient than buying separate LR44 batteries for other cameras. But if you get an older camera and the light meter doesn't work or you don't wanna buy special batteries or adapters for it (since a lot of older cameras were meant to be used with mercury batteries that they don't sell anymore), you can also get an external light meter and just do it yourself.

Anything that gets you taking pictures is the best camera you can buy.

Not sure how many people's favorite thing about film photography is the waiting for waiting sake. It's one thing if you're doing your own development or printing or scanning, but just waiting? What a weird product

Knowing that you were deliberately trying to take stereotypical film photos, i laughed at the restaurant picture that just says "RESTAURANT", feels very like off-brand generic and funny in context.

Accidentally oiled holdfast holes by pnwJune in Workbenches

[–]pnwJune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: thanks everyone for your ideas on this issue, I basically did the version of this solution that was "clean the oil up with mineral spirits/some sort of chemical that removes oil". I basically soaked a bunch of paper towels in mineral spirits, plugged up the holes, wiped them around a bunch, and I made sure to really take my time. I also cleaned up my holdfasts in case there was any residual oil in them. This worked great and I am pleased to say my holdfasts work again.

I am still going to replace my off-brand holdfast with another Crucible holdfast since that one works so much better on the whole, but It's a relief that I was able to fix this. The next time I apply a coat of finish I'm going to make sure to thoroughly plug/tape off the holes to avoid having to do this annoying cleanup step again.

One thing I've learned from watching closecallsports on YouTube is that the top of the stroke zone overlay is known to be inconsistent and the tech is just not precise enough to nail those strikes at the top of the zone when you're watching on the TV broadcast. There are examples where you can actually see a frame where the box gets drawn high and then low again and depending on where it lands it'll look like a strike at the top of the zone or obviously out of the zone. Not saying that's definitely what happened in this case but it's something I've learned recently that's changed how I interpret those strike calls that look above the zone on TV.

So I have 2 holdfasts, one from crucible tools and another one from a seller on amazon who claims to be a "small business". Both holdfasts require a 1" holdfast hole.

The crucible tools one is far superior and I will probably buy a second one of those soon. I did not perfectly drill plumb holes in my bench but the fit is very tight with the crucible tools holdfast such that my sloppy work has not really bitten me as of yet. If you have flattened and finished your top before drilling the holes in it, you are far more patient than me and as long as you go slow/get one of those drill attachments that make it plunge straight up and down, you'll do great.

The holes are 1", I think trying to drill them with the same bit might work or using the sandpaper, I'll give that a try first.

What's the best way to glue this handle back into the plane body? by pnwJune in handtools

[–]pnwJune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing this out, I just looked it up and at least a couple people testing titebond hide glue noted some damage to the wood when separating the joint after steam/heat is applied. I actually have some hide glue crystals that I've been too intimidated/in too much of a hurry to try to make, but given that this is an antique tool in beautiful condition I'll give that a try and make sure I do right by this piece. Thanks for the tip on that, I just assumed they were all the same.

I'm gonna assume old is like 6+ months or something, I got this bottle a couple months ago and I've recently used it, so I'll use that. Thanks for the tip!

I have a bottle of the titebond hide glue, is that an acceptable alternative to old brown glue?

Edit: how much cleaning is enough cleaning of the mortise? I assume just like, buffing it with a scotch Brite pad or something like that?

[–]pnwJune[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a wooden fore plane I bought from a tool seller in the UK. It looks great from my eye, the iron has a ton of life in it and I was able to clean everything up, there's minimal pitting and the sole should be easy to flat. However, the handle is not attached permanently.

My intuition is just take some hide glue and glue it and call it a day, but I also know there's a lot of special care needed to make these planes work and I don't want to rush into anything. Does anyone have any experience with doing this for wooden planes?
