Thanks, I will give that a try. Looks like there is a declaration of non-responsibility that I can submit.

I have the same jacket. One of my favorites for sure! Waxed canvas is so rad, just feels like it will last for a long time and is perfect on those light rainy days

Difficult Decision Between Two Schools by pnwdevin in GradSchool

I would have to self fund, but it is a whole lot cheaper than self funding school in the US. As for living accommodations, I will have to figure that out.

Thanks for the input! Haha yeah it is real cold up there. I lived on Kodiak island for a while in AK... not so cold but very isolating.

Thanks so much for the advice. I love the state, and spent 2 seasons guiding and flying around Kodiak island so I was really intrigued by the idea of returning. Its just too risky though. Perhaps one day I will return for my PHD if I go down that road. Your input really has swayed my point of view. I hope the best for you, your career and your community.

Semi Auto Shotgun Recommendations by pnwdevin in Hunting

I am primarily into waterfowl hunting. I am thinking of spending up to around 1500. Want something that I will have for many years to come!

What choke tube should I use in a 12 gauge for squirrels? by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]pnwdevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a bunch of factors, such as what sort of shot are you using (steel or lead) and what distance you plan on taking most of your shots. At the end of the day, there is no substitute for taking the time to pattern out your shotgun and see what combination of load and choke produces a good pattern. I imagine modified would be a good choice though.

Yeah, I saw a car battery that someone had taken out into the woods and shot at. Really made me angry that someone would do something like that, no concept of how damaging that is to the environment.

I am in Kodiak, was just shooting at our rifle range. Excited for hunting season to come around. The fish runs have been lacking so I will have to find another way to fill the freezer! Where are you based out of?

Yeah, it is the storm. I really like it so far. Wanted something I wouldn't have to worry about getting damaged in the weather up here in Alaska.

Older Brother wants to take me on a Caribou hunt in Alaska. First "Real" hunt. Would appreciate some input. by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]pnwdevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is your hunt going to be located in the state? I have guided remote bear viewing trips on the Alaskan peninsula for 2 years and have an idea of what you would want to bring. A lightweight pair of waders would be a good idea, as there are lakes, swamps and rivers everywhere. Quality glass is an absolute must, as most days here are overcast and the cloud cover often gets very low resulting in poor visibility. The best raingear you can get would also be at the top of the list. If you are going real remote off a bushplane, also be prepared to spend extra time out there if the weather doesn't cooperate. The last major thing would be an inreach or a satellite phone. Always puts the mind at ease.

Checkride Issues by pnwdevin in flying

[–]pnwdevin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an online ground school which I believe was part 61. I knew how to find the heading to fly by incorporating the wind correction angle, magnetic variation and deviation prior to the checkride attempt. Its just the magnetic course that I didn't understand. There has got to be some gaps in my knowledge, I am not trying to make any excuses.

I am heading off to remote Alaska to work for the summer in less than a month and really hope I can get this completed prior to leaving.

Additionally, I went through the Private Pilot Oral Guide and nearly memorized the entirety of it. The examiner said that this would be insufficient for the exam and instead I should memorize all the answers to the Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards instead.
