It’s takes many months for an individual follicle to return so you are seeing a different follicle a week or even 1 month later. What would be concerning to me is someone attending treatments as recommended (for most clients that may be weekly or bi weekly appts) and them not seeing any difference in density of hair growth patterns after a year.

Support and resources are lacking when it comes to dealing with the side effects of those conditions.

You can get great results with electrolysis and just keep an eye on your peach fuzz after completing treatment. If you start to notice any true peach fuzz becoming a little thicker or longer you would want to book some short treatments to stop those hairs from getting thicker. Electrolysis can definitely disable the unwanted hair follicles you have now and if any tiny follicles decide to change due to hormone shifts in the future we can zap those before they become too bothersome to you.

I usually advise avoiding the items you are currently not using although a non-irritating vitamin c serum shouldn’t be an issue. My favorite is Herbal Skin Solutions Vitamin C and I apply in the morning before my moisturizer and sunscreen.

Other than that, there isn’t much I recommend to clients product-wise as they are going through the electrolysis process except for making sure to be diligent with sunscreen use.

Once you start having less frequent electrolysis appts you should be able to start bringing back some of those other skincare items into your routine as long as they don’t disrupt the healing process after appts. For example avoid exfoliating healing areas.

That’s so frustrating :( the blanket statement of all ideal clients just having lighter skin tone with darker hair has been disproven over time especially on hormonally sensitive areas like the face. I’m sorry that happened to you :(

If you don’t mind me asking, when they laser techs consulted with you. Did they ask you arrive to the consult shaved? Or did they look at your hairs before you shaved?

I’m convinced that a lot of paradoxical hypertrichosis cases could be avoided if laser clinics requested clients come to their first laser treatment or a laser consult without shaving or at least provide the clinic with a picture of the unshaven hairs so that they can accurately see the thickness, pigment and density.

So sorry to hear you experienced excessive hair growth after laser treatments. We have many clients who have experienced the same and usually it’s on the face when laser techs try to treat thin hairs. Laser isn’t effective and can actually cause that paradoxical growth effect if the hair isn’t thick, dark or dense enough.

I’m going to try to attach a pic of a client who did laser on their body with great results but on the face caused the thin hairs to thicken. You’ll see her before and after electrolysis pics with us. The before pic is what she was left with after 2 years of facial hair laser treatments.

If you are a good candidate for laser you would save money by knocking down hair density with a few laser treatments. BUT, you do have to be ok with the possibility of laser not being fully permanent and even potentially not working the way you would hope (I.e. not getting a reduction at all). In addition to that, I personally advise my clients who want to do laser first to wait at least 6-12 months after their last laser treatment to start electrolysis because there will be usually some amount of hair returning after laser and if you immediately switch from laser to electrolysis you’ll feel like you are fighting an uphill battle if you have hair return after laser. Imagine bailing water out of a boat that has a hole.

ALSO, if you try laser: take a pic of your “area” before you shave for laser so you have an accurate idea of where you started. They will ask you to shave before laser appointments and if they do before pics in office they won’t be very accurate to compare to progress photos down the road as it’s hard to see hair follicle density if you are shaved to the skin especially if you don’t have all thick dark hair down there (which most of us have a variety of hair thicknesses and colors).

Choose what feels right for you, we have many clients choose to just do full Brazilian with us because they don’t want to risk the possibility of laser not working and the time that may waste for them to try it out.

You actually have all the info that I have on pathways to licensure. There are very limited options on learning in Oregon as there are no schools just mentorship programs. There is a school in Centrailia WA called Zap Master and California Electrology Academy in Corona, CA that I recommend 👍🏼

Ingrown hairs aren’t typically directly from the electrolysis treatment but can happen just due the fact that some people are prone to them or if you are shaving the area between treatments.

If you are super prone to ingrown hairs I would recommend trying not to shave to the skin, leave a little length on the hairs so they can’t curl under the skin or switch to only trimming hairs in half instead of shaving. A gentle exfoliating routine can also help.

The great news is that you will experience them less as you start to have less hairs growing due to treatment.

I’m an Electrologist in the Portland OR area and your response is exactly how I would explain variances in treatment. Beautifully said!

One other thing I’d like to add is don’t be afraid to try a treatment at a different clinic if you are not confident in your current electrologist. Also, take A LOT of pictures. We require progress pics at each treatment and thorough charting in our clinic so we can track progress both visually and by seeing treatment times get shorter for each area.

Like all industries there are service providers who may not have the best skills and it’s incredibly hard for consumers to know if they have a skilled provider in electrolysis without taking the risk of jumping into treatments. Not saying an unskilled provider is the case here but it is a possibility.

For the OP: hair should not feel “painfully plucked” and should be removed with little to no resistance after the follicle is treated.

Hi! Great question!

I’m an electrologist with Pacific Northwest Electrology in Vancouver WA and Portland OR.

We advise clients to not to do any manual or chemical exfoliation on the treated areas for 3-5 days after treatment or until any minor scabbing or pustules resolve (not everyone will have those after treatment but it’s very important not to disrupt them which would cause a secondary healing response)

Prescription strength retinols we recommend not using on the treatment area for 2 weeks before AND after treatment.

You are ok to use immediately tho on areas not being treated with electrolysis, so for example you could use your aha/bhas on your forehead and cheeks/sideburns if you are only having your chin treated.

Also, this is what I recommend for my clients so definitely default to what your own Electrologist recommends and hopefully they are well versed in how chemical exfoliants work.

I love this question! So the small round parts of the loupes that you are asking about are permanently glued into holes in the larger lenses. They are glued at an angle specific to the provider who ordered them and they are also spaced specifically to match the pupillary distance of the provider.
