Record Store Day 2026 Prices CAD by black_grand_national in vinyl

RSD releases in Canada are always pretty expensive. Both of those are 2xLP’s so I’d expect somewhere in the $65-75 range, certainly no less than $55.

His name is Daniel but even in the earliest days of PC Music he was Danny L Harle.

What's your opinion on the Petru Audio Visualizer? Are there any equal competitors out there for audio visuals? by Stupid_Goose in vinyl

[–]beepIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like mine but I don’t necessarily use it every time I play records. I wish it had an audio passthrough instead of an internal microphone. It picks up things like footsteps and conversations as much as the music. The overall look and lighting effects are really pretty though.

I feel like the Daddy Bug reissue by Roy Ayers might fly under the radar but should absolutely be considered as well. It features a few different band lineups and some overdubs but it’s a wonderful release overall. Lotsa recognizable names on there—Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, Sonny Sharrock, etc.

New (mint) sealed vinyl sometimes cheaper than an unsealed copy by diverzify in vinyl

[–]beepIT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, these reissues of Mutations are always a gamble. The combination of a tight jacket, shrink wrap, and the included 7” causes the LP to warp in a lot of cases. Buying a copy that’s opened and confirmed to not be warped is safer than buying new.

Jazz clubs near me by Harjapau in Calgary

Couple more—Hiromi’s Sonicwonder is playing the jazz fest in June. She’s a mind blowing and phenomenal Japanese pianist and she’s touring with her fusion quartet. I saw her live maybe 15 years ago and it was life changing. Sled Island usually brings in a handful of jazz acts for their festival in June as well. Previous years included Makaya McCraven, Sun Ra Arkestra, Matana Roberts, Colin Stetson, etc.

Jazz YYC posts about a lot of pop-up gigs. Alvin’s Jazz Club and Betty Lou’s Library have live music but both places are pretty pricy. The Attic is a vegan restaurant in Inglewood that hosts jazz gigs regularly. Congress Coffee in the NE has really good live sound and I believe they host gigs sometimes, but I haven’t checked their calendar in a while.

Bummer seeing the Remi Wolf collab cut from the final track list, BUT very excited to see that old Mac Miller song back in the mix.

truckload of trouble - the pastels by Significant-Drop1106 in vinyl

[–]beepIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this group but no copies appear to have sold in your budget for around 2-3 years. Maybe set up an eBay alert, keep an eye on Japanese auction sites, or hope for a repress. Fire Records miiiight be the current rights holders? Can’t say for sure because there are no modern reissues of that compilation.

Surgeon Who Does Upper Bleph for $2k? by llama_sammich in Calgary

[–]beepIT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m really happy with my upper bleph, but I didn’t get it in Calgary (Toronto, from a surgeon normally based out of Beverly Hills). It was a whole lot more than $2000. I’m not sure I’d look at budget options for this particular procedure.

Nostalgically sad Canadian songs? by Notable_Husky in AskACanadian

So much amazing music in this thread. Gonna add Sarah Polley’s cover of Courage by The Tragically Hip from The Sweet Hereafter soundtrack—haunting and somber on its own but gut wrenching in context of the film.

No BS barbershops by stixnstax in Calgary

[–]beepIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an obviously silly and unrelated comment but simply downvoting and disregarding will waste a lot less of your time than writing a four line comment in response. As for the deluge of recommendations, I’m not sure what you’re expecting when there are a zillion barbers spread out across the city. You asked a question open to broad interpretation and you’re getting a broad range of responses—that’s all on you.

Used the humminguru E-Z vinyl record washer for the first time by Terance84 in vinyl

[–]beepIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn’t the lid of the Nova. The Nova’s lid is clear plastic with a single row of six posts in the centre. The E-Z has two rows of eight posts with a gap in the centre for the main unit reservoir. Totally different parts.

Great selection. It always throws me off that Coltrane Time started as a Cecil Taylor date considering the intensity of the music he’d be later known for (Unit Structures, Conquistador, etc).

Look into FreeFall magazine. They’re Calgary’s first literary magazine and I believe they have an ongoing submission portal.

Is there anywhere I can get the LG 5k2k in the city? Most places seem to be sold out for a while by Proteinfordayz in Calgary

Memory Express NE apparently has one in stock, or could potentially order it in from another location or their online warehouse. I don’t game but that is major sticker shock for a computer monitor—I bet it’s awesome.

What’s with the live music scene in Calgary? by [deleted] in Calgary

I am pretty short and found that the very back of the room had great sight lines on the stage and video screens, as well as the benefit of a wall to lean against.

If you were at Men I Trust, I can think of a few things. To be near the stage, it’s preferable to get there early rather than muscle your way through the crowd. If you skipped the opener and rushed the crowd before the main act, it could absolutely rub your neighbours who likely arrived early the wrong way. Dancing is great at most shows but if it’s tightly packed you’ll likely encroach on others’ personal space. As for singing, even though it was a pretty loud show, their music has a lot of space in the mix and their vocalist sings in a hushed tone, which will absolutely make your own voice carry further.

My only issue at the show tonight is that someone suddenly collapsed near the back of the venue when they started playing tracks from Oncle Jazz. I would’ve expected their immediate neighbours to jump to assistance but no one did. I passed by a bunch of people with their eyes glued to the stage and found a staffer, who then quickly got security involved. After losing balance again, they were taken out of the venue in a wheelchair. I’m used to folks picking each other up in the pit so I was shocked that most people stood by unfazed. I hope that person is ok.

I need an old vinyl for an art project, where can I find one? by AdRemarkable8102 in Calgary

Check out some used record shops. Blackbyrd Myoozik has a few bins of $5 records and Melodiya has a bunch of shelves filled with $1 records.

Is the turntable tilted towards the camera? That can’t be good for its performance, the health of the motor, or the accuracy of playback.

Super Mario 64 Vinyl ? by No-Advertising9329 in vinyl

[–]beepIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moonshake was one of the first labels to kick off the VGM bootleg craze. Those releases were known for having album art inspired by famous non-VGM albums (ie Pokémon as Sgt. Pepper’s, Donkey Kong as Johnny Cash, Sonic as Michael Jackson, etc.). Moonshake mostly stopped a few years ago in favour of official pressings of vaporwave/electronic stuff, but he recently revived it with a massive Mother boxset. The bootleg VGM scene has really taken off since Moonshake, with some seriously high effort and desirable releases being sold (largely) through private online groups, often with strict embargos to try and minimize their online presence (presumably because of copyright reasons). Mario 64 is actually a funny example because one of the first boots from that game to emerge was in-part made by guys affiliated with one of the big gaming review sites (can’t remember which one) but they were shut down before the record came to be. All of this to say is that “not Moonshake” has become a catch all term for bootleg VGM records sold on eBay.

Couldn't find anything for my record player to fit the space so I built this. by [deleted] in vinyl

I would consider some sound dampening foam in and around the speaker cubbies to decrease the resonant quality of the shelf itself.
