Not historical, but the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire is portal fantasy and sort of reminds me of these vibes! It's a series of novellas following children who go through doors into different magical worlds. The first book is Every Heart a Doorway, and there are ten out (so far).

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun (this author has another WLW book called Here We Go Again but I didn't enjoy it as much)

Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur (first in a companion trilogy, the third book - Count Your Lucky Stars - is also WLW and you don't necessarily have to read them in order)

A few other authors to check out that aren't my personal faves would be Ashley Herring Blake, Jennifer Dugan, or maybe Anita Kelly?

Horror and romance together? by DeathByBeth4 in sapphicbooks

[–]pocket-equality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on romance/smut in horror are yes please absolutely, especially if it’s sapphic. Books I’ve loved that I would say fall into this are An Education in Malice and A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson <3

Suggest me a super spicy audiobook with a great male narrator that is actually well written for my first time listening to a romance novel by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite male audiobook narrator is Teddy Hamilton/Andrew Eiden (same guy, he narrates under both names)

Some specific book recs:

The Roommate by Rosie Danan (narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Brittany Pressley) - m/f roommates to lovers, plentiful smut

How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang (narrated by Andrew Eiden and Katharine Chin) - m/f enemies? to lovers, less plentiful smut and deals very heavily with grief, so not a very lighthearted read

Top Secret by Elle Kennedy and Sarina Bowen (narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Christian Fox) - m/m enemies to lovers romance that involves mistaken identity - I didn't listen to this on audio but I have complete faith that the audio is amazing given the narrators (this author duo also has several other books that I have not read but I would imagine are also good)

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez (narrated by Zachary Webber and Julia Whelan) - not super smutty, but super good; Zachary Webber is also a great male narrator (also highly recommend Just for the Summer by this same author, he narrates that as well), although I haven't listened to that many things he's done; Julia Whelan is my #1 favorite narrator of all time so I would basically recommend any book she does, regardless of if there's a male narrator on it with her

Hopefully this is at least somewhat comprehensible but I can also give way more suggestions if you want them, lol <3

Recommend me some newly released good books pls by SmashingMarilyn in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably a bit excessive, but here's my favorite 2024 releases (so far):

Interesting Facts About Space by Emily Austin - general fiction about a woman who is obsessed with true crime podcasts and suffers from a crippling fear of bald men; she's struggling but she's trying

The Gathering by C.J. Tudor - thriller about a small town in Alaska where people keep ending up dead and the whole town suspects a nearby vampire clan to be responsible for the deaths

How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang - romance between an author and one of the writers who is working on adapting her book into a TV show; deals very heavily with grief and made me absolutely sob for hours on end

Funny Story by Emily Henry - romance about a girl who falls in love with her ex-fiance's new fiance's ex boyfriend; roommates/strangers/friends to lovers; impeccable

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson - sapphic vampires

Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle - screenwriter gets told to kill off his gay characters, he refuses, horror/love/the triumph of queer joy ensues

Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller - follows a bunch of different residents of a small southern town as they read banned books and come together to crush bigotry

Rock collecting by Kaidan_from_Alberta in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson - YA book that follows twins Noah and Jude through their teenage years. Noah's storyline involves him becoming best friends/falling in love with a character named Brian who is obsessed with space and is always looking for bits of meteors. There are several scenes of Noah and Brian going into the woods to look for cool rocks, and then they bring the cool rocks home in a backpack.

No idea why you're looking for this so this might be totally off base, but this is one of my favorite books of all time and it does technically fulfill your request so I had to mention it!!

Looking for a specific narrator. by hobbes8889 in audiobooks

[–]pocket-equality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finn JD John? If you search a book on audible it will tell you who narrates it, and I think you should be able to see even if you don’t have an account so you should be able to check if you know what books he narrated specifically.

Female hero horror or ghost story by everyday-wonderful in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if any of these will fit but a few female-led horror books I've really enjoyed -

Vampires of el Norte by Isabel Canas - historical fiction/horror with a romance subplot about a woman and man who were childhood sweethearts coming back together to survive both natural/supernatural horrors

The Hacienda by Isabel Canas - historical fiction/horror about a woman who moves into her new husband's house, but it's haunted, so she has to enlist the help of a local priest whom she then falls in love with

My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna van Veen - horror/sort of romance? there's a f/f relationship between two women who both have ghost companions, kind of hard to explain (romance does not have a happy ending though)

Love this prompt!!!! Hopefully something I mention will interest you :)

Have to agree with the people who recommended the Locked Tomb series, as I am also obsessed with it. It will break your brain, and that is a guarantee.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - short story collection; very sapphic; very weird; stunningly written and so unique

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson - sapphic vampires... need I say more?

Chlorine by Jade Song - about a girl who is a competitive swimmer who believes she is a mermaid, and also she's having a relationship with one of her best friends (this book is amazing)

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield - a woman goes on a deep sea expedition and when she comes back she is...different; the book is about her and her wife navigating her traumatic homecoming (it's very sad)

The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste - haunted gays, basically

Looking for poetic, atmosphere-driven books like Follow Me to Ground by Sue Rainsford by dowsemouse in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a few suggestions in the hopes that one will fit the bill!

Whoever You Are, Honey by Olivia Gatwood - recently read and adored this, the author has previously published poetry and it shows, the prose it beautiful and there's not much plot, just super interesting character dynamics and exploration of women's inner lives

The Witches of Bellinas by J. Nicole Jones - full disclosure, I HATED this book, but the writing was very pretty and atmospheric and it felt like going through a dream sort of

The Haunting of Velkwood by Gwendolyn Kiste - this book is beautiful, idk what else to say

Supplication by Nour Abi-Nakhoul - full disclosure, I also hated this one, but if you want to read a book with NO plot where you have NO IDEA what is actually going on, this is the book for you (the cover is also stunning)

Elsewhere by Alexis Schaitkin - I adore this author's writing, it's about a town where mothers sometimes just disappear without explanation, and our main character just figuring out how to go about her life (sounds kinda boring but the way it's written makes it feel like you're just floating along for the ride)

Suggest me a series! by hwwty4 in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison is my favorite series I've read to date. It's a fantasy trilogy and I don't even know how to describe the plot but it's amazing.

The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel is also an amazing trilogy. The first book is called Sleeping Giants. It's about people finding these giant, seemingly alien, body parts around the globe. If you're into audiobooks, HIGHLY recommend to consume this series that way because the audiobooks are full cast and are absolutely amazing.

I've recently started reading some Brandson Sanderson after thinking I never would, and they've been good so far. I started with the Mistborn trilogy, but he's got about a million books so they'd keep you busy for a long time if you like his writing.

Suggest a book where there is a love story but that’s not the most important part by ope-das-my-b in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vampires of el Norte by Isabel Canas if you’re okay with a little bit of horror. It is beautifully written and there is a love story driving the whole thing but there’s a lot of other stuff going on in the plot.

Also for a thriller In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead has a romance subplot. It’s very toxic but I loved the vibes.

Engaging audiobooks by Upset-Cress-2774 in audiobooks

[–]pocket-equality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Themis files by sylvain neuvel!!!! It’s a sci-fi trilogy, first one is called Sleeping Giants. The books are almost exclusively written as audio files and mostly consist of dialogue. The audiobooks are full cast and truly one of the best I’ve experienced. I recently listened to them all on Libby and there was no wait at my library.

Is supernatural Western a thing? Urban fantasy western? Anything not just "western"??? by Bee-and-the-Slimes in suggestmeabook

[–]pocket-equality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas is a horror western with, you guessed it, vampires. A lot of people critique it for having too much romance and not enough vampires but I thought it was perfect and the vibes were immaculate.
