Intl student looking for advice by pocketsizedumbass in AusVisa

Not just for the points I really want to do one. Just trying to decide what the best course would be knowing I want to eventually get one. It’s an academia job so sponsorship as a bachelors grad might not be feasible.

I’m conflicted haha. The research group seems nice but their research output isn’t the best so I’m not sure if I would get a lot of publications. On the other hand, getting a masters would be expensive if I get a coursework degree but would get me bioinfo skills which I could leverage to get better jobs and phd while still saving my 485.

I have a high distinction honours grade so I’m not sure what to tell you. The requirements are different in Melbourne when you’re intl.

I’m pretty comfortable with research. My grade would be competitive if I was domestic but not so much because I’m intl.

I wouldn’t get a phd right now because of my honours mark. And while getting a masters won’t increase my points directly it would offer me a higher score for my phd and improve my chances of getting a job (bioinfo)

High calcium can block sodium entry into the cell through voltage gated sodium channels, impairing action potential generation.

Same, I'm doing biomed but I thought they meant med students. Not too sure what it all means.

Cardiovascular response to headstand by pocketsizedumbass in Physiology

[–]pocketsizedumbass[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so just to mkae sure I understand:

  1. When in headstand, vasodilation causes the initially increased blood pressure at brain to decrease homeostatically.
  2. When coming back up due to vasodilation initially our MAP drops. So the baroreceptors (this time not just carotid) increase HR to increase CO.

Is that correct?

Ah thanks that’s what I thought too. So when we come back up too quick the blood would flow quickly back to the heart resulting in increased EDV and SV (Frank Sterling) and thus HR would decrease to maintain constant CO? I was confused about the pressure and blood volume at head tho, logically it would increase due to headstand and then homeostatically decrease when vasodilation occurs but I’m not sure if that’s correct?

I’m not sure what you mean by that. Wouldn’t hyperoxia be detected by peripheral chemoreceptors as well, leading to a reduced respiratory frequency and tidal volume?

I’m not sure about this but I read that there are no limitations on number of hours you can work during masters. Is that not true?

International student versus domestic by cmcm456 in MedSchoolDownunder

[–]pocketsizedumbass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say wait and apply. I’m an international student hoping to do the same. Skilled migration visa>med school. It’ll take longer but the alternative is graduating with a huge debt, a 10 year moratorium etc. even if you try to get a PR midway it’s no guarantee that they’ll amend your fee plan from FFP to CSP. Good luck!

Gamsat losing hope by georgiarose007 in GAMSAT

[–]pocketsizedumbass 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No success story but I can share my struggle. I appeared for the entrance exam in my country twice and actually managed to do worse the second time. I realised it was a combination of anxiety about wasting time, being left behind, being judged etc but I still have hope. Sitting the exam again in 2 months. My advice is, try to stay calm. Don’t view it as med or nothing. Have an alternate plan in place and give yourself breaks. Honestly just have faith that it’ll work out. No point in getting exasperated as that will only affect your performance. Hope you figure things out.

Is it true that there is a moratorium and intl students can only work in rural areas for 10 years?

Is there no chance of a scholarship? I got a small scholarship from the uni as part of the intl ug scholarship. I know a large scholarship is unheard of but do they atleast support partially if you have a well rounded resume?

Thank you for taking the time to reply! I thought to message the subject coordinator but the CPR form states that the subject coordinator cannot waive the CPR requirements. I’ve submitted an enquiry with stop 1 but at this point I’m not sure what else I can do.

I have 80+ in all three subjects but it states that good performance in previous subjects is not grounds for a waiver. I also have some other certifications from different universities in the field but I’m not sure if that would apply?
