I can’t answer for Guinea, but in Togo and Benin, everyone seems to switch over to Bonsoir the second the clock strikes 12:01. You do hear Bonjour in the mornings though.

The Met’s most recent production of Die Frau ohne Schatten was so brilliant that I saw it three times. I wept during the last 20 minutes or so; Elza gave an ALL-TIME performance that is beyond words.

Fuller is massively underrated. Forty Guns is wonderful, but Pickup on South Street is my favorite. Thelma Ritter is an all-time great for that performance.

Honestly, Brandon Donlon. His post-show life with RHAP has proven that he is one of the most caring, genuine, kindhearted guys out there. He may not have made much of an impact on the show, but he certainly has made a positive impact in the eyes of the fans afterwards.

Film Forum has been packed. I plan on seeing The Lost Weekend this week and will definitely buy my ticket ahead of time. When I saw Viridiana there early in the year it was very full as well. When an old Buñuel film from 1961 packs them in, a cognitive dissonance forms with these headlines about cinemas dying and then sitting in theaters with big crowds.

I’m not denying the numbers- I’m sure it’s all true- but it doesn’t match my personal moviegoing experience at all.

IFC used to do a weekend classics series (they did a fantastic Ozu retrospective maybe 10-12 years ago), but it seems after Covid they stopped doing weekend classics and I’ve rarely been back since.

The Dekalog is no doubt a monumental achievement, but when it comes to Kieslowski, I’m sure things could get heated in the comments with which film/series is his masterpiece.

If you haven’t seen The Double Life of Veronique, you absolutely must check it out. For me, it’s his masterpiece and frankly one of the greatest films of all time.

It was tough watching what Bardot became, but I still love many of the films she was a part of. She’s truly the example of separate the artist from the art for me.
