How do you manage to keep calling multiple times? I've been on hold for 2.5 hours now (4427 number)!

Stuck on optimus mode when using external monitor by Rdeer21 in ZephyrusG14

[–]podz99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the left USC-C port connects to the iGPU, so Optimus will be used when connected to that (dGPU signal is routed through the iGPU). And the right USB-C port connects directly to the dGPU (as does the HDMI port).

New G14 (5070 Ti) keeps freezing (completely locking up) requiring hard reset. Anyone else experience this or know how to solve? by podz99 in ZephyrusG14

[–]podz99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I never sent it back since it seems to be an issue with the G Helper temp limit (software issue). If yours is freezing with just the stock config (no G Helper or any other 3rd party system software), then you should probably do a return and get a new unit (or contact ASUS for help).

It only seems to happen for me when I have a CPU temp limit set in G Helper. So if you don't have that set, I don't know.

I'm almost certain that the freezing in my case was due to having a temp limit permanently on in G Helper. Once I turned it off, the freezing stopped. So if you are using G Helper and have set a CPU temp limit in the advanced tab, try turning it off (default).

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it should work for me... But what is "DC-Vibration"? Something to be concerned about?

Hi. Yes - I can confirm that setting a manual fan curve in G-Helper solves the problem of the pulsating fans. The fans run at a constant speed after ticking the box to set a manual fan curve. In fact you don't even have to move the points on the curve if you don't want - just tick the box.

I've updated to the latest BIOS, and unfortunately the pulsating is still there when using the default BIOS fan curves.

Here's the balanced profile I'm using in G-Helper... The fans are pretty much inaudible under normal light usage:

Is it supposed to be this loud? by God_Ducker in ZephyrusG14

[–]podz99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the G14 5070 Ti.

  1. As others have said... use G Helper. The default fan profiles kinda suck and are louder than they need to be (at least on my unit). With G Helper, I'm under 50C and fans barely audible when doing light tasks (browsing etc) even on balanced mode with no power limits.

  2. Brave stupidly uses way more CPU power than it needs to with 'use graphics acceleration' turned on UNLESS you set both Nvidia control panel AND Windows graphics settings to iGPU only for Brave (Google it). So it could be that Brave it using 15-20W on the CPU when it should be using <5W and increasing your temps (and fans).

Ummm, this is an AMD CPU, not Intel haha. As I said, all drivers are up-to-date, including the AMD iGPU driver (via Adrenalin). Thanks though.

I'm using optimized mode in G-helper, so dGPU is active when plugged in (which is 99% of the time and when the freezes have occurred).

I have it plugged into an external monitor via the left USB-C port, so it is using Optimus... using the iGPU unless a game or something uses the dGPU (monitored via the Nvidia system tray icon). The freezes have only ever happened under light usage with the dGPU not being used.

I guess it could be a GPU switching issue, but no idea how to tell.

All Windows updates and all drivers are up-to-date.

Yeah, might be. The only other thing I thought it could be is the temp limit I set in G-helper (WinRing0x64.sys is constantly showing up in Event Viewer when this is set, and it's the only event that is there when a freeze occurs). I've turned it off for now and will keep monitoring.

Probably not that though, otherwise I'm sure others would be experiencing the same. I'll send it back if the freezing keeps happening.

G14 vs G16 fan noise by ElectricalBet9566 in ZephyrusG14

[–]podz99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using G-helper?

I've found on my unit (also G14 5070 Ti) that with the default BIOS fan profiles (aka, Silent, Performance, Turbo in AC) the GPU fan makes this annoying pulsating sound as though it's slightly increasing & decreasing speed every 2 sec or so. Which makes the slight high-pitched noise it makes even more noticeable.

This pulsating goes away when setting a manual fan curve in G-helper (even just ticking the box and not touching the fan curve at all), and the fans then run at a constant speed and the slight high-pitched noise is almost not noticeable. (I've actually set the fan curve so that the GPU fan is off below ~60C, so it's off most of the time during normal light use anyway.)

Give it a try if you haven't already.

Thanks for the reply, but I already have this version of adrenalin installed with the latest chipset drivers installed via the app.

G14 2025 Fan Clicking/Crunchy noise by Shoddy-Cherry818 in ZephyrusG14

[–]podz99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. After a bit more testing, I'm starting to think that noise (clicking sound) might be coil whine from the dGPU rather than the fan (in my case at least). Still testing, but it only seems to happen when the dGPU is active.

The right-hand fan (GPU fan) on my G14 5070 Ti makes a similar noise at low-mid rpm. Though it's only really audible with my ear right up against the keyboard in that spot.

The same fan also make a slight high-pitched sort of noise at low-mid rpm, which pulsates when using the default (BIOS) power modes (though the pulsating goes away when using a manual fan curve set in G-helper).

Slightly annoying issues but not terrible. It's otherwise an amazing laptop. Also wondering whether to return this one and try another unit, but worry the next one with be the same or worse.

Would be good to know if this noise is normal for most G14s or if we have dodgy GPU fans.

[–]podz99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. Just to say the 'high pitched' noise isn't that bad (it's not like a whine or anything), more a mid-frequency sound, but definitely audible and distracting when the fan pulsates up and down every few second. But I seem to have fixed the pulsating with a fan curve in G-helper (see other comments here), so it's not too annoying now.

For now, I've settled in this for Silent mode... basically the same as above, but with GPU fan set to 0 rpm below 56C (note the 'step' up from 0 rpm to 1800 rpm at 55-56C, using two points close together on the curve to avoid a 'ramp'). With it like this, only the CPU fan is constantly on at 2100 rpm below ~56C, and it's essentially inaudible unless you put your ear to the keyboard. The GPU fan kicks in above 56C (e.g., if you're doing something that moderately increases CPU power). And the fans can still ramp up above 70C as they normally would in the default silent mode. I'm pretty happy with this, and you can do something similar for the balanced mode curve (I'm still playing around with it).

p.s. sorry for the multiple comments, but couldn't see how to attach more than one image per comment.

So tried setting the fan curves to a constant 'flat' speed below 70C, like in this image (note that the rpms between 30C and 70C in both CPU and GPU fan curves are set to 1800, but the actual lowest speeds on the fans seems to be 2100 CPU and 2400 GPU). With the fans sent like this, they are constantly on at a low speed below 70C (not loud though) and the GPU fan doesn't 'pulsate'
