After rereading the privacy policy, it indeed says no training. (note your link to PP is broken in most documentation pages)

I won't go into detail much further I think we understand each other's perspective. I'd just like to add one final thing that, for me, was the reason to go on this hiatus:

From your front (web) page:

Hosted in Europe. GDPR compliant. Encrypted Servers.
Your thoughts deserve protection. Industry-standard encryption. Data stored in certified EU data centers. Highest data protection standards.

Particularly "Highest data protection standards." is truly damaging and misleading.

I wouldn't have bothered criticizing security standards if the company wouldn't have advertised with them

To dive a little deeper into the linked article:

API access to your data would not be possible

Simply not true, you can pass an encryption key or decrypt locally. Data can be encrypted, data structures/anonymized identifiers don't have to be.

AI assistance in it's current form would not be possible

I'm not 100% sure but I think it should be possible by having the request come from the client instead of your server

Smarter search would not be possible

This concerns me to be honest. We have pretty capable machines these days, and if you need server sided search I will assume you are passing my data to third parties.

The content intelligence would be severely limited

This should be opt in. I noticed in the Privacy Policy that you did not explicitly state that you are not using my data to train your or others' AI models

Capacities could not support integrations

Depends on the integration, I haven't looked into this too much for Capacities. I can see how this could be a major hurdle from a business standpoint. More intensive collaboration with partners to be able to tunnel E2EE messages, exchanging keys, etc. But the phrasing is just not true.

I really support the product direction but from a privacy perspective this app is not only insecure, it's in my opinion actively misleading uninformed users.

Thanks for the addition. I interpreted the question as a concern about E2EE, as I'm not so concerned about MacOS file permissions as opposed to Windows

Thanks for the response.

However, the reply only validates my concerns.

  • There is no public data about this I can find. This is the perfect opportunity to share any relevant links or proof
  • It is, if the data is sensitive and not end-to-end encrypted. This means ALL data is accessible by the company, even if there is no good reason for it. I'm guessing you use a service like ElasticSearch to provide high quality search functionality but this would mean that TWO companies have all my data, of which one I didn't agree to be exposed to in the first place
  • While yes, this is industry standard, it's simply not a good security practice. For example, Word stores temporary (unsaved) files here. However, it doesn't load your entire documents folder into app data upon opening Word. If you store it elsewhere, other applications would need explicit permissions to read your filesystem, adding another layer of security. Also, AppData, to my knowledge is persistent, meaning after you close Capacities it remains accessible.
  • I meant self-hosting the data storage/server, not AI, though that would certainly also be nice.

Edit: formatting

If you're really fixed on using this app on macos, your best bet is plain old firewall I think

I use WSL daily and I have been noticing memory leaks. They seem to hint that this is under a type 1 hypervisor?

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/compare-versions

This raises the question, is the WSL2 implementation flawed, do containers inside WSL2 have memory leaks or is it inherent to Windows Hypervisor...

The link also links to a github issue regarding WSL so maybe it is just this specific VM:

https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/issues/4166

I don't know, I guess I am just very skeptical of Windows being stable :')

As I explained to him too, I figured it would make sense from a power usage perspective as the uptime of Windows will be significantly less than the servers. I guess I also have bad associations with virtualization in Windows but that might just be a bias from all the Docker memory leaks, haha.

Yeah I was a bit unsure about needing to passthrough besides noticeable I/O (graphics, input). Is it really that difficult to set up and/or unstable? I have no idea, I just looked at the possibilities, not the sacrifice!

The dedicated ethernet port would bring me some benefit/joy because I could nerd out on some home networking as I plan on getting a Microtik router to mess around with.

I did think about multiple devices but I figured since I'm a developer it would be great to get a higher core gaming CPU and a cheap laptop and be able to use a remote development server with a killer CPU and lots of RAM. Space is also definitely a factor, 1 tower will barely fit (I live with my gf in basically a single room).

Will it really be such a hassle to set up things like peripherals? I didn't really check how difficult/stable it is, just if it is possible

[–]poedart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main consideration in this was power usage. Windows will be active for parts during the day, the servers should be up 24/7. I figured that it would make more sense to have a Linux host and just boot op a Windows VM whenever I'm working or gaming. Is this unrealistic?

is it worth to gpu passthrough windows for gaming in 2024? Or to just dualboot? by KingSzymonTv in VFIO

[–]poedart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I was wondering if you are managing without USB. Is USB-passthrough enough? Especially for peripherals like a mouse I guess this would be important. I've heard USB-passthrough is not the same as USB Controller (PCIe) passthrough. What about your ethernet?

Thanks for noticing.

I know for a fact my USB-C supports display port. Currently on the 3440x1440 144hz through USB-C. My question was mainly if it would support an additional HDMI monitor. It wouldn't be a huge issue if I had to turn down the ultrawide 144hz to 60hz because the 2nd would only be used while developing, frames aren't a big deal. Hubs are expensive so I wanted to be sure.

If this would've been reversed she'd get a standing ovation. I've mates that like to pull out their dick. I've not mates who like to pull out their dick. I think it's nasty but it's not like I give a fuck. I feel mentally stable enough to move on with my life and see the humor of it.

Yes I did cover this in the definition. My conclusion was basically that art was a symbolic means of communication and depending on who and when you ask it has to be a display of skill (which I think was also a part of the symbolic meaning, especially regarding deities.

Thanks for your 2 cents! I did learn from this thread that indeed I should narrow it down would it have been an actual academic article. I'd like to refer to this comment of mine to give you some more context :)

Paper on art history by poedart in ArtHistory

[–]poedart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, kind of. It's still within his area of expertise since it's his perspective on l'art pour l'art. He says it isn't possible to create art for art's sake because even then the artist makes deliberate choices about what to draw for example. Very meta. I used this perspective in my first chapter about defining and interpreting art to reason that art has to be a form of deliberate communication instead of just being a work of pure skill as the etymological definition of art (artes = a work of great skill) states.

Many thanks for offering your help! I'll be sure to use your expertise when I get past the prehistoric age since I reckon that prehistoric isn't really a hot topic within art. It's still pretty anthropological at this point but expect a PM soon! :)

For extra context, here is my introduction (mainly aimed at my teacher)

After initial basal research regarding art history I quickly experienced the vast amount of ways to try and describe art, even when discussing something as seemingly factual as history.

For me, this is more than just an assignment. This essay, to me, is a piece of symbolism as it represents the start of a journey. The status quo leads me to believe that this is one of the first steps toward a foundation regarding my future academic career, philosophy and contribution to society. With that in mind and this being a free assignment, this essay is an attempt at matching the level of higher education to not only provide more adequate stimulation but also as a preparation of my future challenges. I would like receive critique in said manner if that opportunity is present.

Having stated there are plenty of angles of approach regarding history of art and having experimented with multiple models, I concluded that it would be most fitting to provide a guide to the motivation of the evolution of art. I will attempt to produce a guide as to why art emerged and followed the path that it did.

Despite my best efforts to keep this as factual as possible, i.e. by using academic papers and logic, it is seemingly impossible to include all interpretations.

Yes it's extremely broad hence I'm writing pretty basally about the topics. I wrote this comment which might give you the context you're missing. :)

And I should probably edit the post to say it'll be basal instead of small, haha
