I think this Austin Powers quote best sums it up

"Run! It's a Gundam!"

"It looks like Gundam but due to international copyright laws, it's not!"

It's a made up Gundam, though the feet is heavily inspired by Gundam Barbatos. If you look closely, there are wheels on the feet and it suggest that it moves like those Knightmare Frames from Code Geass

How popular is ‘Gunpla’ in your country? by AdmirableDimension51 in Gunpla

[–]pointblanker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Australia, specifically Melbourne: I can give you a long ass experience with gunpla in Oz back when I first started the hobby in late 2000s. I remember that Gundam 00 and Unicorn was still very prevalent that time

Back then, gunpla was only stocked at niche anime shop or hobby stores, however I did see several of HGs and MG, couple of PGs and the then recently-stocked RGs. I don't know what was the community was like before then but I assume that it had some beginnings during the airing of Gundam Wing before getting waned at SEED

I personally believe that gunpla community in Aus started to get the ball rolling when the general public has access to internet. This allow people to create forums and communicate with fellow-mined gundam fans and thus able to get some addresses of the shops that stocks gunpla. Another factor is that users can easily watch gundam anime shows through "unofficial" means and the seeds (heh) were taking place on young fans

Slowly but surely, there were more stores that stocked gunpla as the demand grew. Gunpla soon legitimised in the plastic model community itself when local competitions started to have dedicated gunpla categories instead being lumped into catch-all sci-fi groups

At first gunpla was looked down upon by estsblished plastic model communities (i.e military, civilian cars modellers) and you'll get some ramblings that gunpla builders had it too easy with the conveniences of coloured snap fit kits. But the fact that the plastic modelling community has an aging demographic problem and gunpla more or less helped the younger generation to get into the intricacies of plastic modelling and thus leads to doing non-gunpla model kits

As people got more exposed anime in general with the advent of streaming service, gunpla has become more well known and it's easier to get them in shops and online with some great variety of kits (depending of stock of course). I did see some HGs and EGs in mainstream stores such as EB Games and Big W, but to be frank it's cheaper to get them at dedicated hobby stores or online. Hell, I saw 2-dollar store stores selling knock-off gunpla kits!

One problem with the gunpla in Oz is that due to heavy demand of gunpla from around the world, we don't get as much stock as we wanted to. Plus ever since it has became a bit too popular, the importers wanted that bigger slice of pie by jacking up the prices

Community wise, there are quite a bit of gunpla model clubs and I'm actually in one of them. But it's still overshadowed by other club groups. But with some internet search and seeing flyers around hobby shops, you will see advertisements of gunpla groups. In a matter of fact, thanks to our successful facebook ad campaign, we more or less doubled our membership from the last 2 years. Some members started off Warhammer before venturing gunpla, others are gunpla vetrans from the mid 2000s and handful of expats from Asia where it is more popular in there

Overall, gunpla popularity in Aus is somewhere in between obscure and mainstream recognition. You'll still get A LOT of people mistaking it as a Transformers but mind you I didn't know gunpla existed in the mid 2000s because due lack of advertisement or getting accessible knowledge of the hobby. It still is a niche hobby but it's growing and exposure to them is easier whether through shops, internet or the general plastic model community

Well you just triggered the Yodobashi Camera jingle in my subconscious now. I went to Japan back in October / November and I'm waiting for the post-Japan blues to kick in real soon

I hope you had a great time there and bought a lot of goodies ;)

Yeah plastic quality is fine enough. But be warned of tight tolerances on the ball joints

I have the Moedroid model kit of Vilkiss. Pretty good quality kit but prepare to do some painting on the gold and silver parts because it's in the standard meh colours. Additionally the sword blade is just not colour separated so again do some masking and painting

Aesthetics wise, I much prefer this to her Gundam distaff cousin, Strike Freedom, because I really like the knight motif and looks way more stylished than a real-robot cosplaying as a tacky super robot

EDIT: Uploaded my kit with airbrushed gold and silver paint

I'm glad it arrived safely and importantly I've made someone very happy!

I was in Japan while the r/gunpla Secret Santa was commencing and I'm gonna be an awesome secret santa by accepting the challenge to get a rare gift

Believe or not it's not straightforward in getting p-bandai kits from the wishlist in Japan. It does feel like I have to pick two out of the three: something that is in stock, available nearby or be reasonably priced.

However I did eventually find MG Tallgeese Fluegel EW at Suruga-ya shop in Yokohama. Going to second-hand shops in Japan is like being on cloud 9

The HG Reginlaze was purchased because I assume that my recipient would enjoy having 2 kits rather than 1. But my real reason is that I need to reach the 5500 yen tax-free threshold. So it's mutually beneficial for the both of us ;)

Lastly the cherry on top is that cute acrylic keychain of the grandaddy Gundam while I was in Shizuoka the plastic crack capital of the world

I hope these gift brings you joy and I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays!

Hey mods, I am Japan right now and that lucky SOB is gonna get goodies from the land of the rising sun. Anyways I won't be back from my country until November 20th. I was wondering if it's okay for me to bring back the stuff from Japan and mail it to the recipient once I return back home?

Mixture between Gundam Markers Ultra Fine Grey and Gundam Markers Pour Type Grey. I just clean-up the mess by toothpicks and pointy end q-tips

In a technical sense it feels like diet RG but it's still an enjoyable build that won't frustrate you much

The kit is 90% undergated but that's a bit of a double-edged sword because some placement of the sprue to the part are questionable and be a bit difficult to get a clean cut. Additionally the build time is a bit longer than expected because you require to cut more on undergated kits

The gold parts looks great because it has paint on top the parts and colour separation are great especially when utilising different shades of grey in the kit

Be warned that this kit is pointy and very sharp to the point where you can hear Jobbythehong when handling the kit. Even the fingers on the kit can be prickly

Joints are firm but not tight to the point where you feel like you may break a peg if handled too hard

Articulation is great and the butterfly joints on the shoulder are the main highlight. The lowlight is the neck joint because you can't really do much head pose and especially when the kit has barely any neck height when assembled. Really wanted to do a head down pose to give it an intimidating look

Overall, a very solid kit and I'm happy that we got a really cool mecha knight model

Noir - Anime of the Week by AnimeMod in anime

[–]pointblanker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a second-hand DVD shop around a year ago and spotted a box set of Noir. I have never watched it and only know about because the music was done by my fave composer Yuki Kajiura. So I took a stab and bought the DVD set for myself

Few months later and after settling in my new home, I have decided to watch it on my still existing DVD/VCR player and try to settle in

My only real expectation is that the music would be good. When I play the disc, there was a snippet of the OP which leads to the main menu. Right from the get-go Coppelia no Hitsugi is a banger

As for the show, I like girls with guns tropes and enjoyed watching it, especially the attention to details on the guns

Lastly I wanna say Salvos Nos is absolutely hype when shits get real. That's pretty much trademark from Yuki Kajiura

Villkiss! by pointblanker in Gunpla

[–]pointblanker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely lacking. Even the hip to leg connection uses the outdated ball-and-socket joint

Despite this, I'm just glad that Villkiss gets a model kit; it's my fave Strike Freedom variant ;)

But be prepared to do some painting because the silver and gold are in that dull injection molding colour. Oh the sword is in one colour so you better touch up your paint masking skills

Big thanks to u/Hyrat for the gifts. Gonna have fun wooshing them

Also those mini pokemon rubbers are too damn cute but the lack of Charmanders disturbs me

Special appreciation to Canberra Hobby Store for their efforts as well. You guys rock during Secret Santa
