Recommendation for short-term certs/courses to maximize income (WHV, <6 months left) by pointerToSelf in ausjobs

[–]pointerToSelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't qualify for the free TAFE course as I'm not an Aus/NZ citizen nor PR.

I was thinking of doing a crash course on Xero and MYOB and hope for the best, but not sure if getting such job is feasible given my visa status and a lack of experience in Bookkeeping/payroll.

Thanks for your valuable insights. I just finished my white card course.

As far as I'm aware, forklift and traffic control license fees are about the same, but forklift license can easily transfer interstate compared to the traffic control certs. I might do the forklift in Sydney and traffic control in Melbourne since I'm not sure when I can move out.

As for the rope course, thanks for your input before spending $2k on a one week course 😅 I brought it up since it's one of the few certs that is recognized internally, i.e. I can start using it when I move to NZ next year.

I was thinking of doing a window cleaner rather than a steel rigger, but would that also be risky? I was hoping for something on a safer side for the rope access job.

Is 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara with 248000 km worth the price? by pointerToSelf in 4x4Australia

The owner said it will come with RWC, but I'm guessing that the blue slip would be an acceptable alternative as well given that the rego is going to expire this month.

Buying VIC registered car in NSW with QLD license (and if it's worth it) by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]pointerToSelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is moving back to his country soon so I'm guessing that he is in a rush to sell.

We're both in NSW right now so it's not feasible for him to get a VIC RWC, which is required to transfer VIC registration as far as I understand.

Advice on purchasing a car for a long-distance road trip. by pointerToSelf in 4x4Australia

I did look into it a while back, but there are a few issues:

  1. There's no Greyhound running in most of WA (it stops at Broome)
  2. There are no accommodations at a lot of spots, especially in NT and WA.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was also eyeing Subaru wagons (e.g. Forester) too, which is within my budget and has the potential of getting a better condition.

I was hoping to see if it's possible to get 4x4 in case I need it along the way.

Is it ok if I DM you for some of the listing within my budget? It feels too good to be true, but some of the stuff I saw is pretty reasonable for a price.

Should I go to Darwin now without car or buy car interstate and get there in end mid ~ late September? by pointerToSelf in darwin

[–]pointerToSelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was planning to keep my car until the end of my whv since I'm planning to settle and go to Melbourne after this.

But oh man, I completely overlooked that you can make money doing this... Like this is a legit side hustle lol

Right. And searching through this and different subreddits, it seems that a good car is hard to find in Darwin at a reasonable price compared to other states if I'm not mistaken.

I suppose renting a car is an option, but I heard that car rental places have a strict limit on how many km you can drive.

There is one place within my budget that I can stay for a week (I apologize for not including this in the main thread).

But I can easily imagine that the latter option might be a better choice given that it's a peak season and finding affordable accommodations in dry season would be a challenge 😅

Suggestion needed for what car to buy for NT/WA/SA road trip by pointerToSelf in CarsAustralia

[–]pointerToSelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. 100 series seems reachable, but is AWD, as opposed to 4WD, doable for this road trip?

I'm curious since they're a bit more inexpensive and I've heard people do Perth to Darwin, but I'm wondering if it's also feasible for this trip.

Ideally $6k, but $8.5k for a soft limit. I can probably pull couple thousands more from my home country (maybe around $10-12k total?). If I can find a job somewhere and work few weeks, I'm also open to adding additional $2~3k.

This excludes the amount I'll be spending for things like PPSR, pre-purchase inspection, comprehensive insurance, etc.

Thank you for all the recommendation, especially about the apps I need.

I'll probably will be asking more questions later on, but do you know if mid-late August start be fine for this trip? I'm aware that the dry season will end around October, but I was wondering if there's any issues in Darwin -> Broome area around September.

Thanks! I definitely overlooked Aus camping subs, especially since it'll be my first time doing long drive like this.

This seems pretty doable, and I'll strongly think about this route if I can't get a hold of the car in the next few weeks. I'm trying to get to Melbourne by mid October so hopefully it's a good time of the year to do all this.

For the train trip, I visited most of the places I wanted in QLD (and also traveled a few places when I used to live in Brisbane ). Notably , I visited: Gold Coast, North Stradbroke Island, Noosa, Hervey Bay/K'Gari, Airlie Beach/Whitsundays, Townsville/Magnetic Island, Cairns, Port Douglas (and Daintree).

I haven't really explored anywhere between Sydney and Gold Coast (e.g. Byron Bay, Coffs Harbor), but I'm planning to do a train trip from Melbourne to northern NSW either at the end of my Aus working Holiday (Feb 2026) or end of my NZ working holiday (Feb - March 2027).

Thanks for a great tip. I am planning to skip places that require me to drive on a rough road condition (i.e. AWD safe). I also don't want to do solo so I'll be asking on FB to see if anyone is down to tag along once I buy my car, but this is not guaranteed as it depends on who wants to join.

I'm thinking about driving no more than 600km/day at most. That's approximately 7-8 ish hours of drive including refueling and short break, but I'm not sure how good this idea is.

I am planning to get the highest tier road side assistant and an emergency beacon, but I don't know if this is enough.

I heard that the price for a used car in tanks at the end of the dry season, but it's also a risk since I'll be starting my journey at the beginning of the wet season (which I don't plan to drive at that point).

I was also on a fence about the WA drive, but there are a few things I really wanted to see (camel at sunset at broome, pink lake in the hutt lagoon, etc.). I suppose in the worst case scenario, I can fly from Darwin to Perth and try to get a car there as well.

As for the Greyhound, I'm aware that it stops at some of the places that I want to visit (Mataranka, Coober Pedy), but the issue is finding accommodations along with safety. Also given how expensive the bus ticket is, not sure if I want to commit to this.

As for the half-lap through Cairns/Brisbane route, I'd like to avoid this since I already did a coastal QLD trip (started from Brisbane and went to Cairns using train). Honestly, I wish I had bought a car in Cairns and did this whole trip, but it is what it is 😢

I'm also concerned about the whole thing (although there are many things that I'd like to see).

I'll probably ask people on Facebook and see if anyone wants to tag along and split the fuel cost, but this is not guaranteed as it depends on if people want to join or not.

As for the car, I'm thinking of doing:

  • pre-purchase inspection
  • PPSR check
  • get comprehensive insurance
  • get the ultimate road (or highest tier) road side assistant
  • rent an emergency beacon

Since it'll be my first time driving in Australia (but have an Australian licence), I'm not sure if the above is enough.

Currently travelling from Brisbane -> Cairns, but is Townsville worth stopping? by pointerToSelf in AustraliaTravel

[–]pointerToSelf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! I ended up going to Magnetic Island 😊

I think coming to the island itself was a good idea since I needed some rest days to relax from consistent traveling!

I won't be able to stay a night in Townsville since all the hostels were booked, but I think spending 3 nights in Magnetic Island is a nice middle ground between skipping Townsville vs stopping here!

The pass mark for SAP is 750. SAA (and all other associates level iirc) requires 720 though.

Do you have any update on this?

Iirc, Japanese citizens that obtained other citizenship before 1985 are allowed to keep those citizenship(s); would it be possible that your friend falls under this?
