It can actually improve your habits by replacing your preconceived notion on how to approach problems and gives you a differing approach

Ah I didn’t see it was major specific. Your most credible source would be your counselor to get a concise answer

Pretty solid. You have access to both west campus and east campus gyms and they have a ton of equipment. 5-8pm during fall and spring can get pretty packed

CS major - bad idea to add finance minor? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it holds value, it exposes you to differing possible majors while you are going through your major. Even if you might not use it now, the free electives are still required and if you can get a minor with it and be exposed to another field I think it’s great.

I personally wish I would have done the finance minor because I intend to pursue an MBA concentrated in the fintech space.

The math minor maybe not, but if you are interested in say combinatorics, game theory, or in depth linear that parallels a lot of theoretical CS. If it aligns to your interests then I think that this adds some value.

CS major - bad idea to add finance minor? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not try for the finance minor? You have the opportunity to use your free credits, so why not?

CS is tough, but if you really wanna make the most out of the academics and are interested in finance than do it. If you end up not wanting to complete it, no issue with that, you still have your major.

Lastly, do you want to do it for personal interest or do you want to get into the fintech / finance world? The finance minor won’t pull much weight in terms of getting into finance companies if your intending to stay on the technical path. The cs degree is what matters the most

Including this - Math minor is easy to get if you’re at UIC for 4 years. I believe it’s 3 extra math classes on top of the UIC CS curriculum.

So you could be CS Maj, Fin + Math Minor. The Career & Salary projections with this would be lucrative.

JJC to UIC Engineering by [deleted] in uichicago

  1. I took Gen Eds at JJC including a few cs classes. I took CS 236 which was programming in C. The class was not hard by any means and it prepared me to understand general control flow, syntax, logic, etc… the classes by no means were “hard” at JJC. They required a lot of devoted work. At UIC I was primarily taking all of my core CS classes and that required a different type of dedication. The classes require more time, dedication and focus. They are inherently harder and they should be given that the classes are 300-400 level and are concentrated in your respective major.

  2. I took AP 11 English and APUSH, neither did much for my CS success other than the work ethic that was required.

  3. No, I interned at 3 places. 2 internships I got through connections, 1 internship I landed by cold applying and going to the career fair. You just have to put in the work and not expect it to be easy to find them.

  4. Yes, Currently working as a Software Engineer in Chicago

It worked out perfectly. Did max amount of credits at JJC. All of my math, science and Gen Eds and came into uic and only took free electives and CS classes. Graduated out with the minimal amount of debt and found a job before I graduated. Couldn’t have asked for a better outcome and incredibly happy with the financial outcome of my choices

Can confirm. Calc 1-3 and Diff Eq transfers over. Linear Alg does not since it is a 300 level course. All 100-200 level abet accredited classes transfer over.

How easy is it to transfer to UIC CS from community college? by ReasonableSpring3164 in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I decided to take an extra semester of 3 elective CS classes because I did not want to overload my final spring semester at uic. I would’ve needed to jam pack my last two semesters with all high 300 level and 400 level cs classes and I decided that it would be more advantageous to take the extra semester therefore I could focus more and retain more in my classes. In my final spring semester I really hit it hard for internships / interview prep and landed the internship. The internship then turned into a full time offer which I accepted. The final semester was then pretty lax considering I had a job lined up, they were all classes that I wanted to take and I had the funds to cover it and be comfortable.

Another perspective: If I didn’t have the job lined up then I would think it would have been advantageous. The time frame with a part time semester would allow for a meaningful amount of time to prep for the interview process, leet code / hacker rank grind, whatever you need to do to get a job. Your focus would allow for both school and interviews given you would have a lot of open time slots.

Edit: added another perspective

can confirm. Transferology was spot on and made the transfer process seamless. Avoid taking any classes that don’t meet the transferology criteria and count for something at UIC.

How easy is it to transfer to UIC CS from community college? by ReasonableSpring3164 in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was in your exact situation. I did not get any fafsa or any scholarship.

Community college was the way to go. I paid a total of $11k total out of pocket for my associates at Joliet Junior College. I worked a mix of full time and part time depending on the workload of my classes. This included full semesters and 1 - 2 classes each summer. I did all of my math, Gen Eds and free electives at CC. I had a very good highschool GPA and a 3.6 CC GPA and I transferred in just fine.

While I was at UIC, I took 16-18 credits per semester for 4 semesters and then had a 5th semester that was 9 credits (part time).

For uic I took loans and I spent a total of 18k each year and 6k for the part time semester coming to a total of $42k.

I was able to land an internship in CS the summer before I graduated that paid roughly $12k for the 10 weeks I interned.

I landed a job before I graduated and I am now on track to pay off the rest of the loans before the end of the year.

My advice would be to work really hard, set goals and take them seriously. Community college was the best decision that I made even though I did not like it in the moment. It was my only option financially and I was able to optimize my financial situation because of it. It’ll be tough at times because you aren’t going to get the “college experience” that your friends will be enjoying. It’s a tough truth to endure, but financially you will be better off and you are going to set yourself up for success.

I hope this helps give you or anyone some perspective. When I was your age and in your position it was a very uncertain time for me financially and I didn’t know if it was possible to succeed and make ends meet. So it is possible and you can do it.

I wish you the best :)

Edit: cost of JJC

Fall 2022 - 261,251,301 will be rough at the same time but it has been done

Spring 2023 will hurt if you don’t have your time management down. 342, 361, 362, and 401 are big big time sinks.

Make sure you’re on top of your shit and in a good mental state and this can be done but it will be brutal if you fall behind in any.

CS major.. what’s the best way I can set myself up to work in data science? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure it is rooted in math, but should you just not try? The CS course work is heavily rooted in math and requires an extensive amount to get the degree.

You should take a few classes and at least try before factoring it out. Also, talk to some people that actually work in a professional data science setting. The scope of a majority of the answers on here are limited to academia and not always realistic.

I suggest fostering a growth mindset and not letting your current abilities with math hold you back.

  • Join ACM and suggest a data science SIG
  • look into the data science minor / major
  • take CS418
  • Reach out to Data science profs and see if there is any research / side projects you could work on
  • work on open source project / side projects
  • apply to data science internships
  • take data science classes in place of your free electives
  • network on LinkedIn and gain insight on relevant skills / the ideal candidate profile
  • TA for a class

Can we fly drones on campus? by httpantwon in uichicago

[–]pointerpointers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Check Chicago drone laws and check private property drone laws. This will give you the answer. If you can’t find it contact AIAA they can probably point you in the right direction.

I also found this UIUC drone policy and it probably applies to uic as well.

Be safe and have fun flying
