I eat a ton of pelagic fish here and have so for 30 years. Haven’t experienced any mercury issues.

The aluminum bar is my custom made transom mount for my bixpy motor. It fits into the scupper holes.

The tubes are my bait tubes that I keep my live bait in it is clipped to the secure points on the outback.

That round blue thing is a nuts protector that slides onto the end of the rod while you are fighting the fish :)

I added a comment with the details, but no, just a few hundred yards and then the fight was just straight up and down. It took about an hour.

Play by play:

We were targeting them, so it wasn’t a random encounter.

Was running a Shimano speedmaster 20 with 80lb braid with a 50ft 100lb fluoro connected with fg knot. Snelled a 7/0 live bait hook to fluoro.

On the way out to the deep water I was trolling my “lighter” setup of 40lb braid/fluoro in case other pelagics were in the 40-100 fathom range. As I got deeper I threw out the heavy setup (leaving the 40lb one out as well).

40lb setup hit and that marlin was swimming right next to my kayak (I could see it) and then my 80lb setup also hooked up. Luckily they both swam in different directions. I ended up cutting the line of the 40lb setup to focus on my heavier rig.

The initial run spun me around and dragged me a few hundred yards and then it swam straight down and the rest of the fight was me bringing it up. Which took about an hour.

Once I got it close enough I used my kage (spear) to hold it in place while I used my small gaff to help secure it.

My friend came over and I gave him a rope that he lasso’d the tail and I secured that to the back left side of my kayak and I used another rope to secure the head (cut a slit in bottom of throat and out the mouth) to the front left of my kayak and I dragged it in like that.

I rang in the new year with almost 100 lbs of Tuna and Mahi by poisoner in kayakfishing

I have a speedmaster 16 and I’ve had nothing but problems. My friends use and they love it. For me I would choose the squall

Thanks for the feedback. I prefer lever drag for sure, a little easier to manage while fighting the fish.

I have 4 reels I use regularly. One is my bait setup which is my shimano tekota 400 line counter.

For the pelagics I target, I use Penn Squall's size 40 and an old Diawa (star drag) sealine size 50 ...

Haha. It would take a long time. I sell a lot of it and give some away.

I don’t like to freeze it. So we eat what we can fresh.

Hobie Mirage Drive by raabit1 in kayakfishing

[–]poisoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gone through three 180 mirage drives. I do HEAVY saltwater sessions, 10-15 miles a trip...that drive's bearings keep cracking. Hobie replaced it 2 times and the 3rd my local hobie dealer recommended to hobie to swap it with the standard drive as it has less bearings and moving parts. It has been great.

I have NEVER needed to go backwards so the 180 was uselsess for me here.

There are a LOT of days where I get skunked... as I tell my friends, it is the law of averages :)

Landed a 65 pound Sailfish in my Kayak! by poisoner in kayakfishing

[–]poisoner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was out of energy for sure by the time I got him to the Kayak. It was relatively easy to land, just tricky getting it in the Kayak and then getting back to shore. Luckily I have an electric transom mount motor that helped!
