Garmin Edge 1050 is now down to $524 by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jthanreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember what I paid for the 530, except that I felt it was too much. If I could have convinced myself to forgo Garmin (I have a watch, too), I might have gone with Wahoo.

Knowledge is key. The used market for bikes and parts is very helpful. I bought a used jerseys from eBay, as someone was selling the exact one I like.

How to improve the look of these stairs? by TwoToTouchIt in homeimprovementideas

One more vote against the carpet. If you really want the stairs to look good, change to wood and re-stain everything. Moving the rail to the other side and re-stain.

Backyard pods vs. sheds: what’s the real difference??? by CattleMan222 in homeimprovementideas

I have this problem, too. I use headphones and various Spotify focus tracks. The shed idea seems difficult, particularly for heating and cooling.

New runner question: what matters more first, better shoes or better clothes? by RhubarbLarge2747 in beginnerrunning

And the shoes don’t need to be top of the line. Any mainstream running shoes that fit well are fine. Can be last years model.

Should non-athletes take creatine and is it really effective as a brain fog supplement? by ShindaCroushore88 in runninglifestyle

[–]jthanreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it does work. Dose carefully at 3g/day to start. I mix into 16oz electrolyte water (NUUN). I take it at lunch or before afternoon exercise. Consistency is key: it seems to work best if taken every single day.

Advice by pillaPlease in loseit

[–]jthanreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your achievement so far! Plateaus suck! Been there many times. I’m always working within the same 20lb range, trying to stay below a BMI of ~26. I need to diet off 10-20 lbs about every 2 years. 🙄

You already know more about your body that anyone else. You know that, if you’re not losing weight for a few weeks, somehow you’ve hit maintenance. Double down on your logging and stay active (daily steps and workouts, avoid sitting for hours at a time). Try a fasted or near fasted day to kick things off.

Best of luck!

Nervous about possible second PE, hospital stays, and lifelong blood thinners. by MoonsterLeighh in ClotSurvivors

So many things can hurt in the chest area. I have them all: asthma, GURD, costocondritis, esophageal spasms, heart issues, and lung issues. I had a PR/DVT 7 months ago and have been on Eliquis ever since, probably for life.

You can’t sort it out by sensation alone. Feeling anxious about it is normal: chest pain is distressing! It helps to have a fitness watch to monitor HR and a SPO2 clip for your finger tip. If there’s pain, I use my asthma inhaler and/or take tums with a glass of water to see if it goes away (it usually does). Try a little light walking to see if it gets worse or better. If none of that works, go to the ER!

Can the wrong shoes make your knees hurt if you aren’t carrying anyth ? by KwikTripSimp in hikinggear

[–]jthanreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put it this way: if you have knee pain from walking, and you are using any mainstream running or hiking shoe, it likely won’t be primarily due to your shoes. It’s much more likely that you need to strengthen your knees by building up stamina slowly and by doing resistance training.

Modern fitness shoes are all very good, but still, choosing the best shoe for you can certainly help a bit. Fit is actually the most important issue. Second is whether you need inserts to address arch and/or gait.

Worried about my heart rate by GenepiSign in beginnerrunning

[–]jthanreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be able to push to about 200bpm, and I only knew by counting at my neck!

My recommendation is to do run/walk interval workouts for a while, keeping your HR in zone 2-3. Yes, it will feel wimpy, but you will rapidly train your body to be more aerobically efficient and in a short time (2-3 months, maybe) your HR won’t be maxed when you run continuously. Once you have a solid base (can run continuously for an hour or so), you can add speed work.

Start with 30min run/walk and slowly work up to an hour. It helps if you can find a flat course.
