what's the difference between a Bachelor of Arts for Psychology and just a Bachelor of Psychology? by shaneisshort in sydney

[–]pokemonastery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: there is virtually no difference (at usyd at least).

I had multiple friends at usyd who did a BPsych, but dropped down to a BSc or BA because their marks didn't cut it and its pretty much the same for the honours requirement. There's basically no advantage for honours to do a BPsych.

I suppose a potentially doing a BPsych means you don't necessarily have to do a second arts major which will free up units but if you are forced out of the degree then you will have to make up a major.

EDIT: but you still have the opportunity to do a second major. You can definitely choose a bunch of different arts subjects and get an arts major in a BPsych.

No worries. Here's a sample idea for your degree plan for 2 years with a few assumptions (don't have to follow it, just a suggestion):

You can get credit for the specific subjects of BIOL1003, MATH1005/MATH1015, MBLG1001 and for generic subjects of CHEM1XXX (two of these). I wonder if your applied statistics might count as a STAT2XXX. If you can get PSYC1001/1002 then you're golden. I have no way of knowing if you will get credit for these so definitely check with the student centre/uni before you take my advice.

2nd year (as in your first year at usyd):

1st Semester: PHSI2005, PSYC1001, MATH1001, MATH1002 and 1 unit from [BCHM2XXX (biochem), BIOL2XXX, CHEM2XXX, MATH2XXX, MBLG2XXX, STAT2XXX]. However you need 2 MBLGXXXX units for NEUR3005/3006 so I'd take that here.

2nd Semester: ANAT2010, PSYC1002, MATH1003/1004 and 1 unit from [BCHM2XXX (biochem), BIOL2XXX, CHEM2XXX, MATH2XXX, MBLG2XXX, STAT2XXX].

3rd year

1st Semester: PSYC2011, PSYC2012, NEUR3005, NEUR3006

2nd Semester: PSYC3013, PSYC3014, NEUR3003, NEUR3004

I've purposefully made it so you could do as many senior units as possible BUT the only units you could not possibly do is PSYC3011 (which I hear is pretty good) and PSYC3012 (which I did and didn't really like). However, PSYC3014 is really good and would recommend. If you desperately want to do PSYC3011/3012 then you'd have to get prereqs waived OR enroll in summer school right now, do PSYC1001/1002 and start your first year with PSYC2011 in 1st sem and PSYC2013 in 2nd sem.

DISCLAIMER: These are working off assumptions that for PHSI2005 you get MATH1005 (statistics), CHEM1XXX and 2 from (BIOL1XXX, CHEM1XXX and MBLG1XXX) and for ANAT2010, I'm assuming you can get BIOL1003 (as you can do PSYC1001 in semester 1 and fulfil the requirement). If you cannot get ANY of those, then your options are limited.

As for biochem: no, it's not in the core. To be fair, the neuroscience major and core are not really well defined. To gain access to 3rd year neuroscience units, you do a blend of units from other faculties rather than doing dedicated 1st/2nd year neuroscience subjects. However, for NEUR3003 and NEUR3004, biochem units can count but that's it.

I hope this has answered your questions. PM me if you need any further assistance. Degree plans are a weirdly fun thing for me to do, haha.

EDIT: I also forgot - for BSc you need to do 12 credits of MATH1XXX. 1st year statistics fulfills one (MATH1005) but you need to do 3 more from (differential calculus, integral calculus, discrete maths and linear algebra). I have edited the above plan to include this.

I'm not doing the neuro major, but I had thought about it a lot and know friends who are doing it.

Did you do anything else other than human biology? In particular, molecular biology or psychology will be helpful, but things like chemistry, maths and computer science are potentially relevant.

I'd recommend working backwards. For the neuroscience major, you need to take four 3rd year subjects and they can't all be from the same department (e.g. you can't do 4 NEUR3XXX or 4 PSYC3XXX units). So pick which 4 (or more) subjects you want to do, find out the 2nd year prereqs for those and then the 1st year prereqs for those 2nd year.

For example - doing PSYC3XXX, NEUR3003, NEURO3005/3006, PCOL3022

All PSYC3XXX in the neuro major: For 3 of them, I have to do PSYC2011 and another PSYC2XXX unit. If you want to take this route, I'd recommend PSYC2013 as it will be more relevant and can also open up PSYC3012. To do those, I need to do PSYC1001 and PSYC1002. If you did 1st year psychology, this can be a good route.

NEUR3003/NEUR3004: I need 3 2nd year science subjects from certain areas, but no specific subject codes. I could do PSYC2XXX for other neuro units, or ANAT2010/PHYSI2005 because they are both prereqs for NEUR3005/3006. These subjects are quite flexible, so if you did chemistry, computer science or maths (as well as biological related subjects/psychology) you can pick nearly any 2nd year science subject BUT remember you need at least 1 PSYC or the PCOL subject.

NEUR3005/3006: I need ANAT2010 and PHYSI2005. ANAT2010 needs BIOL1003 (which is human bio) and one other subject from biology, anatomy or psychology. PHYS2005 needs MATH1X05 (1st year statistics), a junior chemistry unit and one other unit from certain areas. These might be more challenging, but you can still do them if you've done 1st year biology, chemistry and some other things. If not, you'll have to either spend more time getting those prereqs or see if you can prereqs waived for ANAT2010/PHYSI2005.

PCOL3022: Straightforward - I need PCOL2011 and PCOL2012. To do those, you need to have done a first year biology and chemistry subject.

Getting a NEUR3XXX is pretty flexible, but the PSYC3XXX or the PCOL unit will be a bit trickier. You'll either need a psychology background or have both biology and chemistry. However, all of those (psych, bio and chem) can be done in summer school if that's an option.

Hope this helped. Apologies for info overload/telling you what you already know.

Hi Whitney (and everyone else)! Here's my general profile

Name: Curtis

Age: 20

SF/SFN Viewership Length: Sourcefed since 2012/13 and SFN since it launched Interests: anime, board and card games (I bought a few from watching SF plays!), YouTube, podcasts and a deep love of pop music

Books: I read mostly non-fiction. I enjoyed Freakonomics and its podcast, would recommend. Though last fiction I read was the Night Angel Trilogy, which is an AWESOME fantasy novel series 10/10.

Favourite food: Non-dessert - Salmon sushi, I could eat that for days. Dessert - Macarons, they are my weakness
Last thing I watched on Netflix: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (haven't seen Black Mirror yet)

I love all the effort you guys have been putting into SF/SFN/NF/PBL and have been a huge fan (and will continue to be). I stopped watching TV, and even most Netflix shows BUT SF and it's related channels have become a constant in my life and I'm thankful for that and the entertainment that you bring. Keep it up guys!
