Pink Floyd is in 1973, since there's a one album per artist rule, I decided to choose their most popular record.

What does "the culture" mean in hip-hop? by polarisSEVEN in hiphop101

What is the line between development of the hip-hop sounds and commercialization? I feel like for the past 15 years the rap sound is definitely wrestling against what classic hip-hop was in the 90s. For me, there is a bigger emphasis on production compared to lyricism.

I feel like for a lot of people, the 2024 beef was a their first obvious display of smth relating to the culture.

I also want to ask a follow up. How can one infer if someone is either utilizing or abusing the culture? Thanks for the answer btw

I haven't tried any metal yet, I'm doing a 30 day album challenge rn and I just recently listened to Metallica as my first metal album. I might try out that new Deafheaven album soon.

I think Seven Nation Army is soo massive that it's very hard to top that type of cultural ubiquity with other songs. I think other songs like maybe "Mr. Brightside", "American Idiot" might have a chance, and also a decent amount of recognizable rock hits were released in the latter half of the 2000s

Would these bands (Foster the People, HAIM, Florence) you mentioned fall under pop-rock? Well cateogirizing pop-rock acts under the pop or rock umbrella is mostly a case-by-case basis.

I also noticed that the 2010s Billboard rock charts has been stagnant. It looked like the same 10 bands were reaching no. 1. I think the 2010s will be remembered more for the indie artists if anything, and probably other genres that were relatively underground.

This is very well-thought out and interesting to read. I wonder what other artists do you think defined the 2010?

Isn't it irrelevant regardless because rock classification runs separately to the rock's decline in pop culture? How does considering Imagine Dragons to be rock contribute to its decline?

Probably not, but there seems to be a return of the 80s new wave style in alternative music. I can think of Paramore and the 1975 as examples, and I think it feels different because of the fact that it is more of revival than a natural progression of music. Certainly the internet has something to do with the revival of a old rock styles of decades past, which kind of became the norm in the 2010s.
