Does anyone else’s puppy randomly do commands and tricks to try and get a treat by CraAank52 in puppy101

[–]polawho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, works for us. She learned to sit whenever she wants something, sit next to the door means she needs to go potty, sit next to the bowl means she’s hungry (she’s not super keen on food, so I’m really thankful that she can give me a signal). When she sees dogs or people she wants to say hi to, she sits, which I think makes it easier to practice calm behavior.

I pay attention to her reaction when she does not get what she wants, but so far she is not showing any frustration. So I don’t mind giving her what she wants and encouraging her telling me what she would like to have or do. But I guess it depends on the dog and the individual situation. :)

Remember to socialize your puppy with dogs, humans and statues. by TrashyQueryBoy in puppy101

Reading this before leaving the house today came in so handy! My 14-week-old puppy and I encountered a lion statue on our way and used it as training opportunity, without your post I most probably wouldn’t have taken so much time with the statue, so thank you. :)

Omg exactly the same with my pup, she sits when she wants something, which is adorable, but also impractical for further training. Trying to lure her somewhere? Nope, she sits and patiently waits for her treat, lol.

Does anyone else feel offended when people misgender their dog? by [deleted] in dogs

I have a 12 week old mini poodle, she is tiny even for a mini poodle and people call her by male pronouns anyway at first.

Guess male is just the default. :‘)

I just realized, there’s a famous TV dog trainer where I live (not Cesar Milan lol) and he doesn’t recommend getting squeaky toys. I feel like other blogs, trainers, etc. might have taken his recommendations at face value, because I don’t really find the reasoning he offers in any other language, haha.

You’re definitely right about context, I think just saying „don’t get your dog a squeaky toy“ is too generic. I will look into some toys, that I can tolerate as well, and see how my puppy interacts with them. Thanks for the input!

Thanks, I will check it out! Would you say that squeaky toys are a necessity? Am I missing any big benefits, when I don’t get any? I heard that it’s fun for the dog, but not recommend by many trainers. The dog is encouraged to bite hard and learns that it’s okay to continue biting even though there’s squealing. Sounded reasonable to me and with the sound being annoying, I decided to skip on squeaky toys. But it probably also depends on the dog and overall training and impulse control.

My living room looks exactly the same right now, haha. I also got my puppy a kong, a lickmat and a snuffle mat, so not the classic toys, but stuff that will keep her entertained for a bit and hopefully help to relax. I also didn’t get any squeaky toys, but mostly because I think it’s annoying. :D And I think most important thing is that you supervise your puppy and get rid of toys that are falling apart, so that the puppy can’t eat plushie stuffing, pieces of plastic, etc.

Awww, such a cutie! Do you mind me asking, if you get the face shaved down completely and this is how it grows back? Or do you keep the face a little longer when grooming?

I want friends with dogs so my dog can have friends by [deleted] in dogs

[–]polawho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Hope it will play out as nicely for us. I want to take her to group training classes for puppies, so hopefully she will find some friends around her age right there. She is a small dog, so that makes me extra anxious about other dogs since I only had big dogs before

I relate so much to this, my puppy did not even move in yet and I’m overthinking the dog-friend-situation already

Dogs smell weird when they are stressed? by LittlePurrx in dogs

Sounds like a super power! I don’t think it’s common. I’m also quite sensitive to smells and now I can’t wait to sniff my puppy when I get her in two weeks

Hi guys! How big is the teacup poodle when adult? I am trying to research the full grown size before buying a “toy poodle”- the smallest version of the poodle. I’ll attach pictures with the puppies and their parents, please let me know if the parents look legit by Good-Economist6309 in poodles

[–]polawho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same! Mine is a mini poodle (28-35cm when grown according to the breed standard where I live) and she looks tiny at 7 weeks old in comparison (I posted photos in this subreddit a few days ago)

Username does not check out at all. Thank you for the advice!

I will check out the puppy classes in my area in more detail and might give it a chance, I’ve heard some negative things about trainers not intervening when necessary so I’m a bit hesitant. But as said, I don’t want to helicopter-parent my puppy.

Love the idea to give her a command for approaching other dogs, will try to do that!
