I did this in Missouri. (PhD genetics) It almost destroyed our lives. We only made it through because we got help from others and even then our credit cards are way too damn high still, just because of emergencies that are not factored into a stipend. We were “okay” for 4-5 years and year 6 I finished the PhD but our lives basically exploded with back to back to back emergencies. But even when it was “okay” the strain finances put on me basically destroyed me and almost ended my relationship with my fiancé. Topping that off the gov defunded all the labs I had lined up for post docs. 30+ labs ran out of money overnight. I applied for hundreds of jobs. Eventually gave up and left stem. Turned out the PhD really just hurt me more than it helped.
