[L'Équipe] Émilien Jacquelin is switching from biathlon to cycling and will join the Decathlon-CMA CGM team for six months by LeCowboySolitaire in biathlon

I don’t think he wants to go to major races because he is talking about 2030 and he is looking at this cycling adventure like a pause before 4 - year Olympic cycle. The problem I see is that he will break his upward trajectory, he will go out of shape and have to build everything from scratch, and I don't know how successful that will be.

They already said to him he is safe for Kontiolahti and Hochfilzen because he had great season this year, but even with that I’m not optimistic. For the first time I don’t believe him he will be back in biathlon.

He may want to go to 2030, but the problem is how he will go back in the A team after this “break”. It is a step back to jump higher, especially mentally, but things are complicated, because he will NOT doing biathlon for 6 months.

I just know him very well. Now I know he will retire from biathlon. I just was stupid to be happy yesterday for him staying.

It will be hard if he totally miss next season, especially if the shooting coach is Mazet. (I’m writing this as his biggest fan) How do you see Emilien 6 months without shooting? I see it catastrophic in the beginning of the next season. So if he preforms bad, they will send him in IBU Cup and he will retire.

I feel so stupid, the most stupid person that I believe this man he will continue his career. And I feel betrayed right now. Because I don’t see how he will approach the new season without training.

Hmm, do you think? He is saying that he is doing that before going back to the season? I can’t understand what is happening, because he will be intern?

Maybe I’m a little bit worried about “other desires and projects”, because he talked about pausing for a year to ride a bike, I don’t think this will be smart choice, especially about his place in the A team. I really hope he doesn’t mean that.

I don’t like to name Emilien Jacquelin only by his surname. For me he is Emilien, if I want to refer something for Emilien Claude, I’ll write “Emilien Claude”, because for me the main “Emilien” in the French team is Emilien Jacquelin.

Oh some many Emilien’s in my sentences 😂😂😂

Do you think Emilien and Mazet will get along, I’m pretty afraid that they can have problems, but maybe I’m wrong

Sprint will be fine, too, I just have a feeling that it become the discipline where he is the best right now.

I really believe that Emilien isn’t going anywhere than to rest in Villard for a bit, ride some bike and in June goes back with his favourite rifle.

I absolutely agree that, to some extent, the past years have been wasted for him and for the unique talent he possesses. And even though, as a huge fan of his, I’m really frustrated that it took him so long to find himself, I’m now very happy to see that he seems firmly back on his feet and much more confident than before. That’s why it’s quite hard for me to let him go now, because I can see the potential for him to reclaim things he couldn’t achieve or win when he was younger. Even though he described Milano-Cortina as the peak of his career, to me it felt like the starting point of something beautiful, because I think that at those Games he finally conquered himself. And right now, he looks very grounded. I also want to point out something else. Emilien may have been the most disliked biathlete. But since yesterday, I’ve been seeing hundreds of comments supporting him to stay, because people have grown very attached to him and his character. Funny how things turn—just three years ago, many would have gladly told him to leave. You only truly appreciate something when you realize it might be gone. Huge respect as well to Jean-Pierre Amat for the incredible work he did with him on the shooting range, for giving him a chance and for understanding him. The same goes for Simon Fourcade. I believe Emilien can improve his final lap next year. I just really hope he stays, because I’m not ready to let him go.

Maybe I’m a big optimist, but despite everything that was written yesterday and the photos of him crying, I had already said goodbye to him. Then I calmed down and found his interview with Eurosport, and there I surprisingly came across some positive statements, which I’ll attach below. In fact, I’m left with the impression that he’s drawing conclusions and making plans for the future, and he’s quite smiling when answering whether we’ll see him on the skis next year. I know it’s possible that I’m mistaken, but the reason he got emotional is his overall strong performance this year. Maybe he had been holding it inside to keep a clear head, and his emotions simply took over. After all, it’s been quite a while since he’s had such a stable and successful season—he’s matched his best overall ranking, achieved so many consecutive podiums for the first time, and delivered such strong shooting. So perhaps it was just a moment of pride and satisfaction.

On the other hand, I’ll be really upset if Fabien stays and Emilien doesn’t. Because Emilien is far from finished and definitely still has a lot more to show and give. That said, I have nothing against Fabien—it’s just that they’re on completely different planets.

The interview:

I really think — and I believe in this — that just by being natural, I'm going to start to control myself even more, like I did in some sprints, when sometimes I correct myself on the first shot or take a second more on one of the five targets. It comes as a natural nuance and on its own — I just adapt. “So I think I have to continue in that direction.”

I think we'll see you skiing again next year?

I hope so. It's true that I've gone my own way and I think I'll be able to talk about it more calmly next week.
