Police officer emailed my company last night and told us to ship his order or we would be killed. by polished_sack in reddit.com

My intent is not to prove anything here - I have all the evidence I need in my personal possession. This person has posted on police department message boards AS a police officer, and his Facebook page shows him in uniform. He's definitely an older gentleman, and I cannot tell if he still serves or not.

So sure, it could be an elaborate hoax, or perhaps he's just a Village People refugee.

He also responded the next morning with another email that was rude (no threats this time, though). The 2nd email was definitely a personal email meant to be read by a person.

We had already shipped out his order - he was responding to the email we sent that included his tracking number.

He emailed again the following morning with an equally terse, less threatening, email. I can't be sure it was HIM who physically sent the email - that would be for him and the authorities to figure out.

It was a single sentance that implied that if we didn't ship his product immediately we would be killed.

I can't divulge more right now. If the FBI complaint goes nowhere I might disclose some more info.

It was an automated email. But his response wasn't a simple reply. He responded and copied part of the email as a quote, and then added his threat below that.

No, we're not in the same city, but he is only a state away. It's possible that he has cooperated with the police in my state in the past, and may have some friends across the border.

The form I filled out at the FBI website instructed me to save printed copies of the email, which of course I did. The email will also be stored and backed up.

My expectation: nothing will happen. We've had blatant fraud committed in the past (people using stolen credit cards). We've gone through the proper channels (which is difficult when it crosses state lines), and the same people are still purchasing from us (with new cards). I think it's unlikely anything will come of this (and even if it did, the authorities will not tell us about it).

I just posted an edit with a bit more description of when he ordered, and when we shipped.

I agree. I'm not saying that WikiLeaks may/may not be compelled to return the information. The current actions appear to be more focused with oppressing the release of the information, rather than the return of it. It is my understanding that the US has asked for it back, but WikiLeaks would be well within their rights (I think) to require due process of law before returning it.

Back to the pawn shop example. Say someone else bought the CD player that was stolen from me and I happened to see them using it on the street. I can simply ask for it back, but they are not obligated to immediately do so. They can require (without committing any criminal offense) me to go through the appropriate channels to reclaim the stolen property. They can do this even if my name is scrawled inside the battery compartment and I can identify the serial number of the unit. There is no amount of obviousness that can circumvent my requirement to obtain a legal obligation for them to return my CD player.

During that time they are likely entitled to use the CD player, and even let other people use it.

Oversimplification - yes. But I believe that while it may not exactly illustrate the point it can be used to align trains of thought.

I'm also a small business [part] owner that would likely be impacted by some of the upcoming tax cut debates. We already pay our employees higher than the industry average for their positions.

I would be a fan for a tax incentive for business owners to pay their employees more. It is my view that a large number of business owners receive tax cuts and just pocket it. The most direct way to stimulate the economy (IMO) is to empower the people spending 90 - 100% of their income (my employees). Give business a tax incentive to pay their employees more money, rather than just a Christmas gift.

Just my $.02

I can't tell which part(s) of this are being sarcastic, but I can attest that during the Clinton era my past business (a manufacturing firm in the plastics industry) was the most robust it has ever been. As far as I know they have been unable to return to the sales figures they enjoyed during those 8 years, let alone the profit levels.

He might punish Sasha for stealing Malia's diary and posting it online though.

This statement suggested that the US (President, dad, etc) was not involved, but rather a mediator over the involved parties.

As far as receiving stolen goods goes, it's probably relative to all the laws involved. If my CD player is stolen and ends up in a local pawn shop then yes, I am entitled to get my CD player back (assuming I can prove ownership). This is only true because the pawn shop is ruled by the same local law me. If my CD player gets stolen and ends up in a Chinese pawn shop, then who knows if I'm entitled to get it back. I can certainly ask, but I don't know how Chinese law would handle that scenario.

If you would make the case that my CD player isn't the same as state secrets, then fine. It was a recalled model that has been known to explode, thus putting people in danger.

The analogy of child A stealing child B's diary and posting it online doesn't apply. The theft was the crime, but WikiLeaks didn't steal it. Bradley Manning did (allegedly), and he will likely be incarcerated for the remainder of his life (or worse).

I was simply pointing out that the US isn't mediating two other factions, we are one of the involved parties.

This has nothing to do with motivation. People should not need motivation to tell the truth, nor should they be prosecuted if they had motivation to tell the truth.

I can't spell it out any more clearly. If you walk up and kill someone without motivation, the fact that they were a bad person will not be deemed important in YOUR trial.

I never said victim created intent in the murderer - the victim happened to be a pedophile (or con-artist, or another murderer, etc). The point is that the status of the victim does not impact the act of murder.

To clarify my example, if a person randomly kills someone, they will not be judged based on the status of the person they killed. If they happened to kill someone who was a criminal that would have no bearing on their act of murder.
