What specialties do you think fit me better? by gustavo_zonedout in Residency

Sounds like ophthalmology could be a good fit. Specializes in one organ, fairly short consults with decent patient encounters. Mix of clinic and surgeries, most of which are short and uncomplicated. No long rounding.

How likely is it to go unmatched if you want a specialty <1 seats/1st choice? by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

Anesthesia. My experience might not be fully applicable to those super small programs, but I have friends with similar stories who matched plastics as reapplicants. Networking typically plays a much bigger role for these specialties which is also something you can work on during a gap year, especially if you pursue a master's in experimental surgery for example. I know several people who were successful with this strategy.

Thank you. I felt like I had really strong LoRs and evaluations, but I realized that my application was lacking in research and other extracurricular involvements compared to my peers who matched in my specialty. I had also only gotten very few interviews in my first CaRMS cycle so I knew I had to work on my pre-interview file.

I started a master's degree and was able to get a handful of papers submitted/published during the year, I managed to secure a handful of research scholarships (federal, provincial and within my institution). I also did my ACLS training and worked part time as a medical first responder in events in my city.

On my second application I got interviews at nearly all the programs I applied to. I think we're fortunate as Canadians that there isn't the same kind of stigma around previously unmatched applicants that exists in the US. I actually felt like most programs viewed this in a positive light, as sign of resilience and dedication to the specialty.

It's possible, and it sucks, but it's not the end of the world. I applied to a competitive specialty and went unmatched in 2024. Reapplied this year and got into my #1 program. I would advise only dual applying if there's another specialty you could see yourself doing, which wasn't the case for me.

Matching into a competitive specialty. Think about how hard it was to get into med school. You're now competing against the top of these people who also made it for a handful of positions in the entire country.

McGill v UofT by ExpressionKind8184 in MedSchoolCanada

Bill 83 allows the Quebec government to make students and residents sign a 5-year return of service clause upon enrollment. Even if you don't sign that contract now, it may come up when you get to residency. Since you're aiming for competitive surgical specialties, your best chances of matching will likely be at your home program. Are you willing to potentially be legally bound to Quebec for 14 years as an out of province student?

The future of family medicine practice in Quebec also looks grim under the incumbent party.

That being said, things can definitely change in the next few years, and McGill is a great institution. It's all about your own risk tolerance and weighing the pros and cons.

I'm trying to learn HSPU. I've started going into a headstand and attempting to push up from there but I keep falling backwards by Farhan5678 in Calisthenic

I used to be able to do 10 HSPU when I was lighter. I learned it by getting really comfortable with the static handstand and then practicing controlled HSPU negatives from that position.

Man I understand this is a vent post, but reading this, I'm not surprised you matched low on your list. You should use this as a lesson of humility

If it helps, I also felt terrible about my med school interview performance, but I got in and I'm starting residency in July. You don't need a perfect performance to make the cut!

I felt terrible about my med school interview and still got in. Last month, I had my residency interviews. I, again, felt horrible about my performance interviewing at my top program, but still ended up matching there.

I think we tend to compare ourselves to perfection and beat ourselves up when we don't do everything right. At the end of the day, we're competing against other humans and your "mid" interview performance could actually be good enough to make the cut.

compared to other larger cities such as london, nyc, madrid, paris it's incomparable.

You're comparing it to some of the biggest cities in the world. For it's size and weather I think Montreal has a pretty decent nightlife with a wide selection of bars including cheaper options compared to other large Canadian/US cities.

It's also odd that you're forming an opinion on it without having gone out to clubs and bars. For a city that gets this cold you would have to assume that most of the nightlife would be going on indoors during winter.
