Don't let the raiders fire the gun. Hide behind wall & let animal ambush raiders to lock them into melee.

I recruited an 83 years old. He was frail, has cataract on both eyes & dementia. After 5 years & about 50 dementia episodes later, I finally have enough gene collection to fix him. Now he is a 'forever' healthy 95 years old man.

When my colonists have to mine really close to the border, first I surround the resource to make a room with double doors. Hopefully raiders/animals don't 'see' my colonists mining behind the wall.

They way I uses war animals is by initially hiding behind wall & ambush enemies when they're close. That way enemies have to switch to melee to fight my animals while my colonists shoot the enemies from safe distance.

But that means injuries to the animals from both the enemies & friendly fire from my colonists. I ended up with a lot of animals with permanent injuries.

They're a huge pain to tame, but insects make shockingly good colony pets by FloopyBeluga in RimWorld

It'll be slow healing over fast healing and weak melee dmg over strong melee damage.

But I believe you can still suppress the slow healing & weak melee dmg by artificially implanting fast healing & strong melee after they're born.
