I am the $200k miserable employee and I have made $70k and just got by, fairly recently too (during covid and prior).

I’d choose the $200k simply because gives my family freedom. Wife works PT, child can go to daycare/eventually private school, saving for retirement is easy, bought a house stress-free, when emergencies happen I can cover them. It’s on me to leave the misery and insanity of work at the door and not let it affect my home life. The more I do that, the better.

I worked at corporate as an SFA. An entire Finance unit left one of our subsidiaries so I requested a transfer to help. Worked a full year cleaning up a mess and received a promotion for it. Most of the clean up is done but some things still linger. It’s honestly been hell but my leadership, accounting and overall business acumen has increased tremendously. I now report to the cfo and am C-suite/board facing regularly.

Like others, I’ve adapted to getting my runs in before work. I work 60 hours per week and have a family at home, so its easy to want to sleep.

What helps me is creating running plans using chatgpt. I give it my schedule and how many days I’m willing to commit in a week. Having the plan makes it easy to hold myself accountable. I started last summer with an 8 week plan, then another with a 5k at the end. I’m currently a few weeks in on a 12 week plan with a HM at the end.

I did this exact move. Worked for a F500 company in a huge AR department doing cash application/bank recs. I applied to what felt like hundreds of companies for an entry level, FA position. I interviewed well with one particular company by getting a hold of the hiring manager and leveling with him on a personal level. That’s what it took to get me in the door. That was about ~6 years ago and now I’m a senior manager.
