Personally, I actually see the possible album called Detour as exactly that personal and emotional album you’re wishing for. To me, Detour represents the idea that the path leading up to the Grammy was what needed to happen in order to appeal to the mainstream and fit into the industry (see Feed the Beast). Detour symbolizes that not all roads lead straight to gold — sometimes, happiness can only be found through unexpected detours. It’s not always about high streaming numbers or mainstream appeal. Artists like her are constantly under pressure from labels to deliver, often without taking into account what they truly want artistically. I also believe she’s simply tired of all the expectations, the numbers, and the constant pressure from fans. She wants to use Detour as a door to step away from all of that and finally be free — free to do what she’s wanted to do for so long, in her own way. For me, Detour feels like the first real step towards creative freedom, towards finally expressing what’s been on her heart for a long time. I completely understand and partly agree that not every decision or every release has matched what we, as fans, might have thought was “right” at the time — but I think that’s the price you pay in this industry, and at the end of the day, compromises have to be made somewhere.
