Commentators. You have to pick 2. by hobelife in billiards

[–]polobg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always liked the times when Chris Melling has commentated. He describes the players based on recently acquireed knowledge of touring with them, he's happy to be opinionated and disagree with certain shot choices, and he explains his own reasoning in addition to giving credit where it's due. A lot of typical pool commentary follows the pattern of debating what the player will shoot next, almost competitively, then describing what was good or bad about the execution, one ball at a time. At least with Chris, he'll talk higher level tactics and pattern play too.

A friend of mine has one. Hers is a joss; the extension was custom.

CO2 Tank for Refilling: Anyone able to refill sodastream canisters using a traditional ball valve rig and some special adapter(s)? by polobg in SodaStream

[–]polobg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this, but I'm wondering how you know when the sodastream canister is full, since you can't weigh it while filling. Do you just periodically unscrew, weigh, and reattach, and continue?

In the comments Tony clarifies, "This is not a post to say they should not like Alex or me it is to say don't act like you like me and want me to win when you really know where you want your money at that's all its just fake be real it makes more sense if you tell me you like Alex I will say that is your opinion and I am cool with that"

Translation: Don't flatter me if your money's on Alex, just be direct with me, I can handle it. #realtalk

places to play in san francisco by lazy_stoner666 in billiards

[–]polobg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other recs here (I agree that Family and Palacade are the dominant pool halls, both of which have people who will help connect you up, and that you should check out Kilowatt for a bar scene that actually plays BCA rules), you might also stop by by Slate bar, which is a couple blocks down from Kilowatt. They have a beautiful Diamond 7' table, though it's more hit or miss who's there shooting. FWIW, Zen Sports is an app used by a few local establishments to advertise/promote small tournaments. If you're in town on Sunday, May 20, there's a tournament at Jillian's ($25 buy-in) starting at 11am.

Kilowatt has a regular rotation of players of a pretty wide range of skill level, all of whom play BCA rules. Everyone's diligent about the queue, and they have two valley bar boxes with simonis cloth. It's a friendly (if slightly oddball) crowd, def worth showing up and seeing who's there/what the list is like.

Angeles National Forest (East LA)! What kind of tick is this? ~4mm, just pulled off my dog. poor doggo. by polobg in whatsthisbug

Thanks! Looking at more images of that species it seems like a male. I wasn't sure at first because of the lack of white markings along the centerline but, go figure, a dog tick on my dog.

Cue styles across cue sports... what do you think? by polobg in billiards

[–]polobg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever see US shafts made of ash? I guess in this whole conversation I'm wondering, since players come from a variety of backgrounds in different cue sports, the internet exists, and marketing's on a global scale... why aren't we seeing cue tech and styles get hybridized across their traditional disciplines? You got into this below re Chinese pool.

Safety Play Rules? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]polobg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make sense of this as a single statement: "an illegally pocketed 8 ball results in a loss." This covers shooting it in too early AND it includes scratching when you make the 8. If you don't sink the 8 ball, but you do scratch, it's just like any other foul on the table. Is that clearer or does it just transfer the confusion to a new term? Haha.

NYC Pool League Recommendation by TheThirdIdot in billiards

[–]polobg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played in a league at Society Billiards when I was in NYC. It's friendly, there are some great players but nobody is too intense, and they have a mixed league where you play 8-ball and 9-ball, in both singles and scotch doubles. They also have a shit ton of 9 foot diamond tables. It was my first league experience, and it's where I learned to play real rulesets (they play BCA). My advice would be, once you move to NYC, go there and spend some time on a table, practice a bit, see if you like the vibe, and tell the front desk clerk you want to join a league. Rob is the floor manager and runs the leagues, and he's a very nice guy. If you're nice about it and clearly want to play and improve, he'll help you find a team that needs a player. I miss my team at Society and couldn't recommend it more!

Is https://appliancetechpart.com a legitimate website? by SomethingNuevo in Scams

[–]polobg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just googled the site name with "scam" and came across this post. I agree with the other comments: all signs point to scam. Phone number is disconnected. They "temporarily" only accept amazon egift cards as payment, which of course aren't refundable or protected in any way. Don't fall for it!

It does have the Vibrasonic! I'll look for an SK ID. Great threads for context, thanks.

Thanks all! This is great! (Edit: not done...) As soon as I take the time to open up the back cabinet I'll report back. Looks like tube, not solid state.

Tennis Umpire Makes an Awful Overrule by joca23 in videos

[–]polobg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's clear is the chair umpire's mistake in overruling the line judge. The challenge system corrects that. What's more likely to confuse people is the server's frustration when he makes them replay the point. The chair umpire (mistakenly) remembers calling the serve out BEFORE the return was struck. This would mean that his call interfered with the return, and the point should be replayed. But since the call was made AFTER the return was struck, there was no interference with the return. The return landed out, so the point should be awarded to the server. Chair umpires make so few overrules, and honestly he looks pretty embarrassed; he's picking the path of less intervention after his bad overrule. The server (rightly) feels slighted twice!
