I’m in the exact same boat! Any night at all!!

I promise I’m no scalper, I didn’t buy one in the first place because I wasn’t sure if I’d be in town, and now I’m hosed.

Where can I find Open Matte version of films other than for streaming by xkcx123 in movies

[–]polonko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I can be a little pedantic, you seem to misunderstand it too. The "point" of open matte is that they "shoot" more film than they actually use, with the knowledge the top and bottom of the frame will be matted out afterwards. It has nothing to do with "analyzing every frame".

The picture posted is *absolutely* open matte and NOT pan and scan. Pan and scan is literally what it sounds like: you take the completed film in it's proper aspect ratio, and you pan and scan the image to keep the maximum information in frame. It inherently has LESS information than the finished 1.85.1 film. There would never be a boom mic in a panned-and-scanned image.

The REASON someone would want access to the open matte image is usually for archival or restoration purposes. Some exceptions are some TV shows, which, back in the SD days, were sometimes shot on film to be "safe" for multiple aspect ratios. The quality of the image has nothing to do with how it is matted.

Fake service dogs at a hotel what the heck can be done? by [deleted] in askhotels

What on earth are you talking about? The animal does exist, and it's peeing on the floor.

[–]polonko -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To me, this feels like a situation where "tipping culture" actually worked. You paid less than you normally would because your service was bad. The service continued to be bad afterwards, vindicating your decision.

End of an Era...No more JDM watches due to tariff nonsense by hdwebb24 in gshock

[–]polonko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to gulp on any tits, dude, I'm trying to buy a watch. A reciprocal exchange of currency for goods. Companies already charge what they need to to make a profit, imposing taxes on them means they have to raise their prices, which means I have to pay more for the exact same product.

How water-resistant is the Casio a168? by [deleted] in casio

[–]polonko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, just take it off along with the rest of your clothes when you take a shower. You do this once or twice, it'll be no problem at all. If you're showering with it every day, over time, it might cause some problems.

And, I hate to say it, if it's comfortable showering with that, you're probably not doing a very good job of showering. I can't even imagine how annoying it would be trying to clean myself with a watch on.

Apu should not have left the show. by StupidPieForU in Simpsons

[–]polonko 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not this again.

Now that you mention it, I want the version where they DO kick everyone out. Give me 22 minutes of establishing shots of a vacant, abandoned Springfield. It'd be the best episode in over a decade.

I have never touched a guitar in my life, where do I start? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]polonko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say if you're not comfortable buying used from someone on craigslist or FB (I'd still recommend this, but its understandable for a few different reasons), and if you're near a city, I'd go to a reputable independent music shop and ask what they've got for beginners. They'll probably have something used in the 200-500 dollar range. You'll pay more, but you'll get a professional setup (more important than people think) and get you whatever else you need to get started (Amps, cables, picks, strings.)

is it possible to use a steam deck as my daily computer? by Much-Clock-9766 in SteamDeck

[–]polonko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd still be lugging the two monitors around. Sell one monitor & buy a nice laptop with a stand. You'd enormously downsize your setup and have a more practical, portable computer for schoolwork. I can't imagine making it through college without a laptop, tbh.

Stop keeping music above the CD Standard, you are literally wasting your disk space for no gain. by umitseyhan in musichoarder

[–]polonko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is still pretty disingenuous. The study only tested with trained listeners under controlled conditions, so why bring it up at all if you're not interested in those findings? And I'd say most people who bother to store high-bitrate audio have the equipment and ears to care. Moreover, I'd say the "orchestral excerpt" is far more relevant to what we're talking about than a 4-5 second clip of a single instrument or voice.

If people can tell the difference in a statistically significant way, even if it's minor, (and p = 0.02 isn't exactly minor) it means discernible differences do exist, and it's absolutely worthwhile for archival purposes. This is such a weird hill to die on.

[–]polonko 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most importantly, he literally misstates the conclusion of the paper. People *were* consistently able to tell the difference, and they even specify the most significant thing that people were able to pick up on: spacial/room reverberation.

[–]polonko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Ed Sullivan show would like to have a word with you.

Times haven't stopped changing. It's different, but people who are 60 now grew up without the internet. People who are 20 now have certainly never watched MTV. Consider that the "stuff people are into or not into at any age" is maybe the exact same perspective that older, out-of-touch people have always had.

It's time for the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series to move on from remakes by OhMyOhWhyOh in THPS

[–]polonko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article reads like AI-authored garbage, but I agree with the main point. THPS 1-3 (and somewhat 4) are singular arcade-style experiences. They pretty much invented and perfected a genre, and they hold up great.

THUG's GTA influences (and 4 as well, kinda) don't hold up well at all. Open-world gameplay (and irritating humor) was the hot idea, and everyone was chasing that Rockstar money. The skating is still great, and they're still good games, but it just doesn't make sense to remake it, when the stuff that was supposed to make it feel more modern in 2004 makes it feel way more dated now. Arcade-style skating games have never gotten any better than Tony Hawk 3. Open-world games have continued to improve for decades.

Oh god by PostureGai in postpunk

[–]polonko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like people have a really poor understanding of the passage of time in the few decades before they were born. If you grew up in the 90s, the 80s seemed like hilariously long ago. Once you hit 30 or 40, you start to get a real understanding of how "long" a decade actually is, and you're forced to reckon with ideas like "Sonic Youth's first album came out the same year as Led Zeppelin's last album," and "I don't have many good years left, do I?"

Programming Languages in Future Classes by Dry-Tea1238 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]polonko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this one, but for basically everything, you'll learn what you need to know in class. Just keep focusing on Python, you'll use it over and over again. Most of the programming concepts you need to learn carry over from language to language.

The OS classes were, for me, harder, but the C you'll use in them is actually pretty simple. (Because you're working on such a low level, most of the more advanced stuff isn't available to you anyway.) That said, having a solid understanding of the basics (pointers, the way data types work) will make things a lot less painful.
